Our first stop on Spring Break '07 was Bucharest, Romania. We left Alexandria at 9:00pm, drove to Cairo, took a 4:00am flight to Milan to catch a connection to Bucharest. We were exhausted and nearly incoherent by the time we arrived at 1:30 in the afternoon. After much ado, we rented a car, sat in rush hour traffic and finally made it into the city to look for a hotel room. Unfortunately, every hotel we had bookmarked in our Lonely Planet was either full or closed down! By 7:00 in the evening with the rain pouring down, we must have looked desperate because a kind Romanian pedestrian we had stopped to ask for directions hopped in our car and led us to a vacant hotel. All's well that ends well! With only a few days ... read more

As there was a holiday on last Thursday and riots, we took the possibility to make a bigger trip. So I've planed detailed weeks before. We were 18 people and 2 Mini-Vans, each for 9 persons: 11 students from Budapest, 6 form Debrecen plus my sister in Romania who has organized a very unique local first day and was a very great dolmetscher. A quite multinational group with 4 germans, 4 portugiese, 2 polish and turkish, as well as 1 czech, finnish, italian, singapore and south korean. So after a common dinner on Wed at my flat we started to Debrecen to pick up the rest. Unfortunately the description where the dorm is located, was not very good. That's why we searched almost one hour to find it. The next problems we had at the ... read more

Here i am again in front of the computer, testing my English skills :). This entry is about Romania and how really beautiful it is, how people are so different in all parts of the country. Last weekend i decided to hitch-hike around 700 km and to see a small part of Romania and to see some friends of mine in an AIESEC conference. So i took 2 new members from AIESEC Pitesti and we left to see a few towns in the heart of Romania (Valcea, Sibiu, Sighisoara, Sovata). During the 700 km we changed 10 cars and 2 buses. The interesting part of this trip was that in every car we met new people and i realized that the people from the center of Romania are THE NICEST PEOPLE EVER. At first they are ... read more

Here are a few pictures of the members of AIESEC Pitesti that i have seen since i got back to Romania. Old members and new members work together to bring results to the organization, it's a nice feeling to see them work and i think they will do a great job. It's hard not to get involved when you see how much passion they put in everything they do. I can say that AIESEC Calgary and AIESEC Pitesti are my "home LCs" and maybe soon AIESEC in Lithuania will be the 3rd one. ... read more

Hello again, Here i am back in Romania, the place that rapidly grows but nothing ever changes, last week i went to Olanesti with 2 of my friends to rent the Hotel for a conference, it was a nice trip and a very interesting one, because i realized that one year ago i was in the same office, with the same director, negotiating on the same prices and he said YES, it was a total DEJA VU. I smiled and went outside, nothing was changed, except for the secretary. We made a few pictures and hit the road. In Valcea ,(a 150.000 inhabitants town) lots of aggressive drivers and a HUGE MOLL that was not there last year. We stopped the car on "dealul negru" and had a Romanian traditional lunch, we had "mici" (see the ... read more

Hey I got home and i am writing my first post from Romania, actually from aiesec office. I got home 5 days ago and i still have problems with the time difference, i have a cold and i need to sleep all the time. Yesterday i had the impression that is 28 and i was working like crazy on some trainings. The first thing that i noticed about Romania is that ...it's small, and my home town looks like a cold brick with pieces of culture, i had more cultural shocks back home than in Canada, taxi drivers trying to take advantage of me, people not smiling, humidity, chaotic traffic, etc. I didn't immagined that i will see Romania like this, but i even noticed the huge pile of garbage from my street and i was ... read more

Midnight Arrival Capers A cheap flight from Budapest saw us fly into Bucharest, Romania, at midnight. We had for once pre-booked a hostel and had noticed that they offered an airport pickup service for E6. Being the adventurous types we decided to make our own way to the hostel; that's when the fun began! After collecting our bags we ran the gauntlet of the taxi drivers and made our way to the buses. We had been told that you have to purchase your ticket from a booth before you get on the bus but try as as we might we couldn't find a booth that was open. Too late we saw the last bus of the day disappear into the night! We didn't feel like going back to the taxi drivers and admitting defeat so we ... read more

Got back to Europe and back to Romania, the first thing that hit me, leaving apart Austrian's rudeness and their total, absolute lack of communication, was the cold weather. Romania is pretty much the same as I know it , not much has changed, got back to a sad-looking, depressing grey image , so familiar and somehow so remote! I miss people smiling to me on the street, talking to me out of the blue sky and just being genuinely happy and cheerful. Yes, weather does influence our state of mind! I hate this grey, bleak winter, it is so demoralizing, I don't feel the joy I felt only 10 days ago, travelling to Villa de Leyva and admiring the landscape. There is no landscape here, we are surrounded by greyness. Everything around me is grey!:((( ... read more
