12/03-01/04 The purpose of this 3 weeks in Romania was to spend time with Raluca, my new girlfriend. We spent most of the time in Iasi, her hometown. I fell in love with Iasi while I was there. Iasi's dramatic skyline features the neo-gothic Palace of Culture (my favorite building in Romania) and hills topped by monasteries. The center of town is dotted with early 20th century neo-classical structures including the university building, a hotel designed by Gustave Eiffel, and the theatre. The churches are what is special about Iasi, though. The Church of Three Hierarchs, Golia monastery (preferred by Peter the Great), Mitropolia cathedral, and Cetetuia monastery all stand out as architectural marvels. Mihai Eminescu's favotire part of town was the botanical garden of Copou, where he wrote many of his poems. It is the ... read more

Bucharest-Poleisti-Sinaia It is Sunday, 6/10, and this morning we left from Bucharest and drove to the beautiful mountain resort village of Sinaia, about 75 miles from Bucharest. On the way, we went through Ploiesti. Just a little background on Ploiesti. Ploiesti, about 35 miles north of Bucharest, is a pretty city of about 230,000. The city was founded in the 1500s. During the mid-19th century, this region was one of the world’s leading oil extraction and refinery sites. The city was the main source of oil for Nazi Germany during WWII. Because of that, Ploiesti was the most bombarded city in Romania during WWII. We didn’t spend any time in Ploiesti because our focus destination was Sinaia in the Carpathian Mountains. Sinaia gets its name from the 17th Century monastery built by a Romanian nobleman after ... read more

Because I did the thing of saving money on accomodation by using overnight bus and train... two days in a row. But First, Two days in Sarajevo. Sarajevo was... fascinating. I have never been in a country that scarred from it's wars. Ok. It was the hardest hit in the Balkan wars. I know. Yes, Sarajevo was under siege for nearly four years, relieved only by UN Air support and a tiny tunnel. Yes, The town of Srebrenica is in Bosnia. This atrocity and all others were ten years ago, and yet, it feels like yesterday. This is the only country in which there are still landmines in it's cities (only in the outer suburbs but still). This country is so poor that even it's national library (direct hit, burnt for days, thousands of priceless records ... read more

Heyyyy guys, Sorry its been so long since ive posted! I thought the internet would be WAY more availiable than it is. Anyways ive got soo much to fill in so sorry if this one seems scattered. We are staying in this town called Pitesti, which is about 20 minutes away from the Apartment blocks that we are working on which is in this villiage called Oarja. The buildings we are working in are about 50 to 60 years old and were donated by the farm next door. The kind of things they(habitat for humanity) have got us working on are things like putting in doors and windows, cementing walls, wiring electricity through out the building, and plumbing, among other tasks. But even by just doing those things let me tell you...construction standards here are ... read more

The myths and legends about Transylvania enticed us to go a bit further into Romania than we initially planned. For those who know me(Shilpa) well, Im not the biggest fan of dark, scary, or vampire stuff so Dara loaded the van up with those extra few cloves of garlic and started sharpening the wooden stakes. This sealed the deal for me, and we headed into dracula land...!! Left my Appendix in Romania.....(Dara) As Dara cannot recall much of his first day in Transylvania I'll attempt to explain the longest 2 days of our trip. Well, we thankfully in hindsight decided not to wild/free camp and stayed in a lovely dutch owned campsite in the small villave of Sovota. In the morning we did a hike up some hills and to cool down had a long swim ... read more

Today was full of many activities. School Visit The Team started the day by going to the high school near Doug's apartment. What an experience that was. We both have a new appreciation for America's educational system but also find the world has many of the same challenges in educating our youth. Observations from our school visit: We visited the school during the high school session. (The school runs 3 shifts during the day with the last shift being high school. Sessions start at 8 a.m. and run until 7 p.m. with the high school during the last shift.) When we arrived, there was a guard in the entryway. We said we would like to visit and asked for the principal. He pointed us to walk further so we just went into the main building. ... read more

The Matt & Mom Excursion Team took on Bucharest on its own. Doug had a meeting so the Fearless Okies got a taxi and took off. Observations From Today: Immersion is the Best Way to Learn a Culture: The Team thought we would go out and immerse ourselves in the city and see what life was like as a Romanian. Even though we thought we were immersing, the Romanians saw us floating on the top—or the bottom. Doug says they can spot an American easily by things like MY HAIR COLOR, my shoes, Matt’s shoes, etc. Mom covers her gray with whatever Marv feels like applying and the Romanian ladies cover their hair with bright red to be stylish. Maybe Mom will return red-headed. As we walked the streets, Matt’s flip flops must have had ... read more
