This month we celebrate the 5 year anniversary since we began our non-stop nomadic gypsy lifestyle. 4 continents, 29 countries, 142 beds and countless ornate churches later we are still in one piece and, despite a few newly acquired aches and pains due to old age and cheap Ikea beds, ready for more. We found ourselves in Lviv, Ukraine without a plan of where to go next. We thought about seeing more of Ukraine or perhaps moving on to Russia. Russia needed an expensive visa and Eastern Ukraine didn’t have much pull for us. Indecision seemed to rule the day until we read of the so-called Gypsy Train that leaves Ukraine nightly for Romania. The Gypsy Train is an overnight train that goes south from Lviv to the small town of Sovotino on the Ukraine/Romania Border. ... read more

De Laatste ... read more

Geo: 45.9432, 24.9668 Sailing all day on the placid, quiet, not blue Danube River is a mixed blessing. Sailing is truly lovely on this now gentle stretch of water, but we will not dock anywhere until early tomorrow morning, so there is no escape from the boat; we cannot run off to walk around a town or city, to stretch our legs and minds seeing new sights and meeting new people. But it is hot, close to 100F most days, so perhaps I would not have walked very far anyway. Since my earliest memories from childhood I've always enjoyed a break from routines; unique impressions from the previously unknown are stimulating and exciting. A year ago on our sail down the great Yangtze River in China, I felt even more constrained when we were not allowed ... read more

Geo: 44.4479, 26.0979 One week after finishing up this year's frequently hectic teaching schedule, I left Boston on Friday evening, June 17, losing seven hours in flights, through DeGaulle to Bucharest, Romania, my first stop in Eastern Europe. We arrived around 2PM Bucharest time, and I quickly removed layers of clothing and socks -- necessary for the freezing airplanes -- to greet the 93F temps outside the chilly airport. Gorgeous weather, beautiful city! As soon as I could drop my luggage off and change into cooler clothing I went out exploring the area, even though we were staying in a hotel several miles outside the city center, braving the heat and walking down to one of the largest parks in Europe, Herastrau Park. Lovely Herastrau Lake was busy with pleasure boats; I saw many people enjoying ... read more

Rising early today, we walked to the Acropolis of Athens. This ancient ruin is located on a massive rocky outcrop above the city of Athens. There we found several ancient buildings of historic significance. The most famous of these being the Parthenon. After hiking up a somewhat treacherous stairway that has probably been there for hundreds of years, we found ourselves amidst history. It is nearly impossible to fathom how the Parthenon was built in its day. I am in awe of the fact that tons of marble and rock were formed by man and possibly a cantilever that resulted in these massive architectural structures. After spending hours on top overlooking the expansiveness that is Athens, we descended into Plaka. Plaka is considered one of the oldest neighborhoods in Athens. There you find narrow streets lined ... read more

General info: Currency: Lei Cost of living: 1,5l bottle of water 2,5L, 0,5l local beer 3L, meal In restaurant about 20L This trip was special to me because of few reasons. It was first in my life planed in advance holiday leave, first with Mr M, and at the same time making my childhood vampires fan dream come true. Romania known for bloody Transylvania legends, has much more to offer though, what I’ll try to prove here. To make a trip more interesting and not too easy we decide to go by car. This option enable us to choose the route, stop wherever we want and enjoy the views. We hit the road starting from Warsaw and planned first stop in polish mountain town- Krynica Zdrój. We spent lovely evening there and next morning moved forward. ... read more

Hotelul are 3stele si pozitia lui este un ... read more

We rented a car today at the nearby Radisson Blu hotel and made our way north. We drove through a town with a Chernobyl style nuclear power plant which was interesting to see. As we got further north the clouds rolled in as we entered the dramatic Carpathian Mountains of the Transilvanian region. We were on our way to spooky Bran Castle the former home of Vlad Tepes, also known as the inspirational source of Dracula. (In full disclosure, we realized before we made the trek up here that Bran Castle really didn't belong to Vlad, at best he was maybe imprisoned here a few days, but we weren't going to let pesky details like that stop us. At the end of the day, you have to consider that you're visiting a "vampire's castle". So we ... read more

We arrived late last night so we spent the afternoon today just transferring from our hotel to our Airbnb and getting our bearings around old town. We had a leisurely lunch at a Lebanese restaurant and then took in the national history museum (robyn mistook it for the natural history museum). It mostly consisted of a reproduction of Trajans column from Rome. Not quite sure how that fits in with Romania's national history, but it was informative at least. Then we saw an exibit of ancient roman gold and silver. And lastly there was an exhibit of polish posters from wwii to present day. Hopefully the other museums will be more focused on Romanian history. Went to Van Gogh restaurant for a light dinner.... read more
