As we stepped off the train at Braşov, we were surprised to be hassled about accommodation for a change. Finally, maybe we had come to a place in Romania which did expect tourists! Not that I mind walking off the beaten track a bit, but having already been recommended visiting Constanța by someone and finding the apparent lack of anywhere to accommodate tourists there, I was worried that the whole of Romania, including Braşov, would be a repeat of this. However, I had been told to go to Braşov by two other people who were very right. We took the guy who offered us a hostel up on his offer, and we stayed in an extremely cool place called Kismet Dao hostel on the outskirts of the historic centre. Our train had picked up the standard ... read more

I hate getting outsmarted. Arrived and immediately got harassed for taxi rides, hotel stays, etc. However a tall black guy named... I think Derek... came up to me and, in English, started instructing me as to the lay of the land. Turns out that he went to school outside of Lubbock, and was now in Romania playing basketball professionally. He stuck me on a bus which ended up at my hostel, and we agreed to meet up that night for dinner. Made it to my place relatively easily, although I did have to scamper around what appeared to be a wolf pack of (probably not actually) skinny and disheveled stray dogs. It appears that there are loose dogs EVERYWHERE in Romania, something which I had read in my guide book but had not believed in the ... read more

I returned to the 'mici restaurant' to savor a final helping of their version. There was a little combo in there playing Romanian tunes, lounge-lizard style. I got the back of my pants wet in the toilet from unknown substances on the floor, forcing a hasty retreat to my nearby pensiune for a quick hand wash. It rained all night again forcing me to pack damp clothes. It was 8:00 when I was ready to go to the bus station and I had to wake up Reception to take my payment for the last day. LOL I had a short walk from the city bus to the gara but I had a printout of the bus schedule so I was a happy man. I had contacted a chat friend and arranged a short visit to Brasov. ... read more

Last night we left Budapest and took a night train to Brasov, Romania. I didn't expect things to be so different here, but they really are. The night train was alright, kind of cramped but the bunk beds were better than any of the hostels we've stayed at. Jessica and I were watching a movie on her mini-computer when the cabin door flung open and a train attendant sharply demanded something in another language. Everyone gave him their passports and tickets for inspection so we did too. About an hour later the door flung open again and another train attendant asked for passports, but this time only from Jessica and I. He took our passports and wrote down information from them. I found it pretty alarming because it was a different person, which means they're keeping ... read more

Varna to Bucharest was an absolute mission!! I went to the train station in the day to get a seat reservation for the 10pm train. I was told by two people this wasn't necessary so went on my merry way to the beach. However, when I came back at 9 I tried to get on and was told I did in fact need a reservation... However, as it is during high season, all of these had gone as Romanians and Bulgarians headed home from their holidays. I was told by the conductor, who said he didnt know was interrail was, was to buy a ticket from him for 80 US dollars! Seeing as the reservation should have been around a quid, i told him where to stick it. So I found another train which was heading ... read more

Budapest - Brasov So, to finish up Budapest first: After a Sunday night of beers and Palinka at the hostel, we stumbled out into the bright daylight of Budapest for a final exploration before taking the train away. Lunch was definitely order of the day, oversized portions of Schnitzel and Chicken Kiev was deeeelicious. We then attempted to visit the Terror House (Museum) in order to take advantage of its potential air conditioning, but, closed on Mondays. So we walked for ever and ever up to Hero's Square. Thinking we were clever we decided to take an alternative route back to the hostel - a foolish decision because we mostly walked next to a motorway... in the searing sunshine. Indeed, that was Budapest. Armed with a bottle of Jagermeister to ease the night train - we ... read more

Way back in the 80's, Steph (as a little girl in love with gymnastics) watched a movie called Nadia about the famous Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci. So when we first moved to Europe and made our hit list of 'must-see' countries, Steph put Romania on (out of a Dracula curiosity I seconded it). I've been to Bucharest a bunch of times for work, and since this time I was going on a Thursday/Friday it was perfect for the girls to meet me for the weekend. Steph was extremely brave attempting her first flight alone with Dahlia but totally survived with the help of clucky air hostesses, and when I met her at Bucharest airport we introduced Dahlia to 'real' heat. It was 42.5 degrees - easily the hottest she had ever felt in her short life. ... read more

I have to admit that the only reason I was interested in visiting Transylvania was because of the Dracula movies. But Ill have you know that it wasn't because of Dracula, but rather the castles and the mountainous scenery the movies showed. And although it wasn't quite like what I had imagined, I certainly was not disappointed. The train ride through the Carpathian mountains was jaw-dropping; mountains that were over 2500m high, lush forest all around, following a beautiful stream and every now and then a beautiful castle. After arriving in the city of Brasov, I once again followed a backpacker to their hostel (although I have kinda been travelling with the girl (Jacqui) I followed) and it payed off once again. I quickly ditched my bags and went exploring this touristy but beautiful town that ... read more

Greetings! From Istanbul we caught a night train north to Bulgaria. We nursed a bottle of Raki (Turkish Ouzo) with our cabin mates before nodding off, only to be woken by border guards at 3 a.m. and told we needed to walk to the far end of the station to have our passports stamped. As we exited, the conductor pulled Jub aside, stuffed 15 Euros in his pocket, and asked for three cartons of cigarettes from the duty free store. So after getting his stamp, Jub headed to the store, but realized the conductor hadn't specified a brand. No big deal; ten minutes back to the train, ten minutes back to duty free, only to find they'd just sold out of the conductor's brand. Jub then repeated the process--trying to ignore that it was now around ... read more

Brasov day 9 (June 15) Another mini-bus ride to Brasov. Equally crowded. I think one woman had a number of dinner sets in one stripy bag that was placed in the aisle, quite a few people sitting on luggage in the aisles. Brasov has a marketing slogan “Brasov, Probably the Best City in the World” which is a play on a Heineken add. A bold claim but I liked the slight humility in the “Probably” and also the fact that it wasn’t an absolute claim. Brasov is a lovely town. It’s old town including the black church (named due to a fire), the many towers and it’s remaining fortified wall were all interesting. It had a relaxed feel to the town and despite being really hot it was a good place to wander around. We had ... read more
