It’s now more than a week since we left Bucharest to travel to Brasov, a moderately large city in Transylvania. The city has a population of around 250,000. We left Bucharest on Easter Monday, which is a public holiday in Romania, and so the traffic through Bucharest was not too bad – or at least significantly better than a normal weekday. The week after Easter was also school holidays and so many people had left Bucharest to travel to the countryside and this was pretty evident from the relatively empty carpark surrounding our apartment. However, a lot of these people had to start work on Tuesday and so the traffic returning to Bucharest was bumper-to-bumper coming towards us – I was pleased that we weren’t part of it. Our trip northwards initially passed fairly flat farmland ... read more

Went to Brasov again for work (at a conference). Stopped at a nice restaurant in Predeal on the way there, then got to Brasov just in time for the first lectures. After the Friday talks were over, I went with Ileana around the city and found a film festival taking place in the main square. So... We saw Kon-Tiki. It was very nice. On Saturday we attended half the talks, then left for Moroeni (where my sister was on a trip with her classmates). We spent a lovely afternoon there, with a nice bonfire, 2 guitars and lots of songs... Then we got back to Brasov. On Sunday we gave our talks and then left home in the afternoon. Total distance: 499 km.... read more

Romania. Land of the old Romany gypsy woman, and home to count Dracula. Not a holiday or travel destination. At least this is what a close minded nitwit would say. If you’ve read any of my other blogs you’ll know that I’m a sucker for cheap deals. If Ryanair fly there, you can almost guarantee that I’ve been. The best way to see the world is to go to the most obscure places, get out of your comfort zone and discover the unexpected and downright bizarre. Romania, Transylvania to be precise. Land of mountainous ranges, caves and rivers. Also home to a number of ridiculously funky bars. Which is where we spent most of our time. My friend Chloe and I flew into Bucharest, on the airline I hate to love. When we arrived, I did ... read more

A short trip to Brasov that I hadn't planned. On a Saturday evening, after finishing with the exams, I felt I couldn't stay home anymore and left for Brasov... After a nice dinner in an obscure pub near city center I drove to Predeal. The road was a bit terrifying, because it was very foggy and dark. After a good night's sleep in Predeal I drove back home just in time for what plans I had for Sunday. I left on A3 and came back on DN1. Total distance: 358 km.... read more

Have you ever done something you didn't like or didn't think you would like? Or that might have been just a little bit on the loopy side? I’m about to do just that. It’s not actually something I will do. It’s not something I will eat. It’s something I’m going to be. Cold. I don’t like being cold. I froze in Russia while sleeping outside in minus 12-degree weather. I was chilled to the bone in a protected valley in Mongolia doing the same thing until I crawled up a hill to thaw out my toes in the early morning sun. Will I ever learn? Probably not. I have spent most of my journey traveling in warmer climes, not only for the warmth and the ease of travel, but also to carry a lighter backpack. Now ... read more

Do Brašova sme prišli so skvelým, asi len hodinovým meškaním.

There were more “lucky” eggs in the morning, before our date with the big city. Brasov is the metropolis of Transylvania, but looked smaller than the 225,000 quoted population. It has had a mixed past. Kronstadt as it was known in German, it became Orasul Stalin for a spell in the 1950’s before the local Communist crew decided they could do without the Russians. The Huntsman ignored a very attractive gold dome church in the distance as we reached the outskirts of Brasov, before making his 1st stop at a more Saxon religious venue. The original German church had no striking architectural features of note, but the graves in the yard had plenty of Fritzs and Hermans interned in them. There were some with pictures of the “inhabitants”, one of which bore a striking resemble to ... read more

After the late night Sneezy birthday party, it was another fairly early start. We were fortified with eggs for breakfast. They weren’t just any old eggs, though. Huntsman branded them Lucky Eggs. Will they ever catch on at Morrisons? The local transport theme would continue today. Yesterday, local bus – today horse and cart. Well, 2 horses and cart to be precise. The cart had the engineering hallmarks of building a boagy when we were kids, except that it didn’t use the base of a pram. The suspension was at best suspect or perhaps non- existent. The idea of sitting at the back seemed to make sense from a photography point of view, but being right on the back axle made it hard going to say the least. The horses looked in fairly good condition. We ... read more

When I arrived in Bucharest Romania, I started asking locals what to see in Romania. I asked the landlord of the furnished 1 bedroom apartment I rented on airbnb.com. She gave me the name of Brasov and Sibiu. Then a few others I met confirmed Brasov and Sibiu and added Sighisoara. Another mentioned Dracula’s Castle, and added that the idea of Vampires is not known in Romania. Historically, Romanians did not create the myth of Vampires, but they are happy to have us import our tourist dollars, pounds, and euros, to celebrate the myth. That probably means there are no Vampires, kids. You really thought that an extraordinarily strong character that throws people through the air like rag dolls, sucks your blood out of your neck with sharp teeth, and leaves you for dead, with bite ... read more

Il me semblait avoir ... read more
