Rooming with Leslie means early rising. :-) She woke up at 6:30 and opened the drapes. I got up at 7, and did some yoga while she went for a walk. It's a very pretty day, warm with blue sunny skies, so I started on the balcony, but the concrete was a bit hard -- I moved inside for floor poses. Leslie came back and at 8:15 we headed out together. We walked to Old City, which was completely deserted except for some unhealthy looking street dogs cleaning up after last night's revelers. It was fun to see the same place again, in the light. We explored a few more blocks than last night, and found an old Greek Orthodox church at the dead-end of a torn-up street. Today is Sunday so there was a service. ... read more

We headed south. Then east. Then West. Camping is free in Romania. This means if you want to find an actual campsite you have to know where one is. A six year old Lonely Planet is probably not the best source of information, and this is what we had. We drove through Sibiu – couldn’t find the campsite. Couldn't find the campsite in Curtea de Arges either, and the campsite another 50ks down the road looked truly ordinary. A brief stop at a random servo for diesel and beer. We bought some dark beer which is dangerous – a lot of it had turned out to be sickly sweet malt based stuff. In the lolly section at the same servo though - truly excellent liquid rum centred chocolates. These would have to wait until the evening ... read more

Brasov is located in virtually the centre of Romania, 176km north of Bucharest. The city is in Transylvania and surrounded by the Carpathian mountains and as a result it provides a mix of amazing mountain scenery and German Medieval history in the old town. Brasov is the most visited town in Transylvania and it was packed when I was there in August, as a result it is a little more expensive than other cities but compared to most of Europe it was a bit cheaper. The following day I decided to climb the 900 metre Tampa mountain that offers great views over Brasov. At the top you can stand beside the Hollywoodesque Brasov sign that is lit up at night. Brasov has a huge Black Church next to the town square and from there the pedestrianised ... read more

An easy and worthwhile daytrip from Brasov is to Sinaia, which lies conveniently on the train line to Bucharest. Like Brasov, it is surrounded by the Carpathian mountains, making it a perfect setting for the beautiful Peles Castle. From the castle, it is a short walk to the monastery, through a wooded area with sounds of a stream nearby, and also a man playing the pipes. Vendors sold grilled corn on the cob. Back in Brasov, I finally took the cable car, which goes to the Brasov sign at the top of the mountain and provides a beautiful view of the city. On my last day in Brasov, I went to yet another water park. I didn't realize until the day before that there were two water parks in the city. I went to the one ... read more

The overnight train from Budapest to Romania was pretty nice and the bathrooms were spotless. I had a two person sleeper that I shared with a very nice Romanian woman, although there wasn't much room in the cabin. The train line went from Budapest to Bucharest but I got off in Brasov, a beautiful town in Transylvania. Also on the train line was Deva, and but we stopped there in the middle of the night, and even if I had been awake I wouldn't have been able to see anything. I am pretty happy that they speak a Romance language here because I can sometimes make out what they say to me (hit or miss) and especially read some of the signs so I don't feel completely lost. Brasov is a beautiful town in itself, but ... read more

Romania, Romania, Romania.... Just B-E-A-UTIFUL! We have had the most amazing time there. It is a shame we had not booked to stay longer as the country was gorgeous! We got up to get the 5:45am taxi from Ruse, crossing the Danube and travelled to Bucharest. Arriving at about 8am, we wandered through the town to find our hostel. We felt like we were back in London. It was lovely. Grand buildings, malls, monuments, fountains... was a nice change from what we were used to. I was excpecting something similar to Sofia, but it was so much nicer! We stayed at Butterfly Villa Hostel in the North of Bucharest which was a really nice hostel. Managed to get a room to ourselves, on the top bunks and got organised. We then went out to explore Bucharest, ... read more

Days 2 & 3: Brasov After our enchanting night at the "Loft of Heartache" we headed on to Brasov, Romania. http://www.romaniatourism.com/brasov.html Brasov is one of the seven walled citadels populated by the Saxons of Transylvania, which were known in German as the Siebenbürgen (seven boroughs). Brasov is a lovely town, with traditional foods and artwork reflecting both its Romanian and German roots . It is also filled with a surprising number of English-speakers and Americans. It's a pretty touristy place, which we are not accustomed to living in Chisinau. So few people speak English in Chisinau that my ears have grown very sensitive to picking out English speakers in a crowd. As we walked around Brasov, we were delighted to hear a mixture of languages and accents...French, Italian, British and Australian English, and of course the ... read more

Brasov Beck and I arrived in Brasov on the night train and made our way to the hostel where Beck was staying, and promptly fell asleep for a few hours because we were so tired after the train! It took us a while to find the hostel so loads of local people in the main square were helping us, none of them had a clue either! But eventually we found it, no receptionist, a wierd old man let us in the door, where one Australian guy was asleep. He was the only other guest in the place! After our sleep we went to meet my couchsurfer, a bus ride away from the central square. Mihai met us from the station, he was a surprise because he has a condition which means he can't walk properly, we ... read more

Day 4-Royal Palace & Brasov 20 August 2010 Yet another perfect weather day. It is no wonder why this village was picked for summer get-a-ways from the heat in Bucharest. Before reporting on today, Jackie just reminded me to tell about the dogs. We were warned before arriving in Sinaia that there was no air conditioning in the hotel. But as nights were cool, it would be fine as you could just open the windows and get a cool breeze in the room. “You might hear some dogs during the night but nothing to worry about,” said our guide. If it troubled you then you could just close the windows. Right! On the first night we were still recovering from jet lag. So, while traveling in the bus we would nap. That meant that sleeping soundly ... read more
