Hey all, from Dracula's homeland. We are currently in Transylvania, more specifically, Brasov. Just wanted to say Happy 4th of July to the Americans!! Have great BBQs and I hope the St. Louis summer isn't too hot today. Enjoy a hamburger and a Budweiser for us! A good hamburger sounds pretty good right about now...but there is pretty good beer in Romania/Bulgaria! Love to all, Brigid and Lachlan... read more

Across Europe, from West to EastEdgar Barguiarena Alright that was kindy cheesy but I did visit 3 cities in 3 days. Well okay it was really only 2 cities and a small village but all the same, there was alot of roaming about. Romania is a land of contrasts, Bucharest is...well its Bucharest (more on that later) and the Transylvanian countryside is absolutely gorgeous. Yes this is the land of Dracula but only in fiction, the real Dracula was actually much more treacherous and creative with his assasinations, so much so that I would really rather spare you the details here. Many villages and small cities have some sort of claim to Vlad Tepes, of whom Dracula is based, but I was only able to visit one of them. This is going to be a bit ... read more

Saavuin tanne kuuluisaan Transylvaniaan pari paivaa sitten jahtaamaan Draculan haamua. Ensimmaisena paivana taisin muistuttaa itse haamua unenpuutteen vuoksi. No, ei siina mitaan, maistoimme shotit tata erikoisuutta. Mausta en osaa niin sanoa mitaan, vahvaa oli ja polt... read more

The Hollywood of Romania, Transylvania. Thats what this area should be called just because of the white nametag signs on both Brasov an Rasnov mountains, quite funny to look at :) I arrived on Tuesday at midday after 16hrs on the night train, an experience in itself. 6 beds, 3 on each side in a small cabin, shared with two romanians that couldnt speak english. One was so large that she could nearly not fit in the bed space and was a rival for the snoorer in Newquey, not much sleep when she was! The other seemed quite nice, she put on her laptop and we wached the movie 300 with Romanian subtitles. The train stopped 4 times between 10 an 4am for border an passport checks, got a few stamps from that peice of ... read more

In the morning went and had a look at the Black Church. There was a lot of police and military police cars outside, some VIP was getting a guided tour through the church at the time. I went in for a look and sat in a pew to soak in the atmosphere. There was some security wandering around and giving me death stares, walking past me trying to see inside my jacket. Big, mean looking buggers they were, looking like angry Mirat Safins too. When the VIP went past there was about 6 around him and they all glared their way past me. Inside the church turned out to be not that spectacular. Not decorated that much, mainly lots of tapestries which looked pretty ancient. Strange thing was the floor was wooden, first time I had ... read more

for anyone following my continuing adventures, I have now returned to Brasov after 3 days in the Carpathians. I've been riding with a German girl called Lisa who is a photographer. Saw the castle where Vlad drunk blood and the inspiration for the Dracula cartoon series. Stayed in a cable car hut by a mountain lake 2034metres above sea level last night. This holiday gets better and better might even be approaching happy.... read more

Saturday 6:30 am, Nothing can stop me, clouds, rain...distance.. I need a breath of fresh air.. I love Bucharest, the people, the streets - mix of old and new, the chaos... I cant live without his noisy personality but from time to time I have to run away as far as I can... So got my friends togheter, lots of patience, laughters and drive towards Transylvanian mountains. First stop was to Posada's cinegetic museum where i had a sweet encounter with a friendly bear (lately they are the turists atraction when they come down from woods to Brasov or Sinaia for a meal from garbage). My plan was to go to Bran, at Dracula's castle (I can't get enough of visiting it)... but the weather had other plans... so we stoped in Sinaia, visited Peles castle, ... read more

The easy answer is that he never existed but I did find out about a very disturbing character called Vlad Dracul Tepes who had the nasty habit of sticking people on spikes and leaving them to die a slow and painful death. Dracul is derived from "son of the dragon" and Tepes means "impaler", thus you get the charming name of Vlad the Impaler, son of the Dragon. This bloodlust led to the myth of the Vampire Lord we all know as Count Dracula. Sadly this was one of the main reasons why I chose to visit Transylvania but after seeing a number of towns and their surroundings I can easily say that this area has far far more to offer than vampire myths and haunted castles. Before traveling to Transylvania I spent a few days ... read more

the train ride to Brasov was uneventful, though we did talk to that Austin woman for half of the time. Being from Texas, her speech was painfully slow and sometimes we just wanted to smack her and tell her to get to the point. arriving at the train station, we were approached by this woman Maria who apparently worked at Rolling Stone hostel, a place we had read bad reviews about. she kept trying to tell us our hostel was booked and to take a flyer but we just said 'bye' and kept walking. about ten minutes later while waiting for the bus to the old town plaza she came up to us once again, telling us that people had come to her from our hostel, kismet dao, and that they had a reservation but were ... read more

So today Jeff and I did the most unexpected thing ever. We fucking climbed down a mountain. Oh, ya, in the rain. Who does that?? And yes, I almost fell like 400 times on slippery-ass rocks. I even scraped off half of the skin on my side on a tree that I had to grab onto so as not to fall off the mountain. And then after not falling even once on the mountain, we get down to a set of stairs and I slip and almost fall on my ass. Stupid manmade structures. We've also visited the Black Church, which was burnt at one point, I think. Also saw this old 16th Century fortress atop a hill. And ya. We shopped a little, but I didn't buy anything. It was sort of a weird, not-doing-much ... read more
