Ok so we've already left but we wanted it on the little map thing. Currently in Bulgaria where there are yet more thunder storms and mosquitos which are eating us alive. (we call them Dracula). Arrived via night train last night and got to the hostel at around 6.30 am our time this morning (half 4 for you). Managed to check in and get a few hours sleep for a small extra charge, They also gave us breakfast so it was all good. Then we went for a wander and found all there seems to be here....nothing. We went into a pretty cathedral and down to the crypt where there is apparently some world renown religious art (I wouldn't know) we managed to confuse the lady on the desk with SS's aber uni card for a ... read more

Travelling up from Sofia to Bucharest in Romania was quite an enjoyable journey. There was some beautiful scenery along the way to admire and it also gave me some ‘me time’ to catch up with reading after a busy time in Sofia pottering about. We travelled first class and before you conjure up images of fabulous décor with champagne and wine on demand; take a nostalgic moment to wander through the corridors of your mind and picture what CIE trains looked like in the 1970’s & 1980’s in Ireland and you’ve got the idea of what first class was like. If you have any preconceived notions about Romania and Romanian gypsies think again! After arriving in Bucharest train station and being dumped out on the platform at 6:30am, we made our way to town via taxi. ... read more

Bucharest day 12 (June 18) It was a short train journey to Bucharest the capital of Romania. Our hotel was actually 3 star and a nice surprise. I took the metro to the down town area with a friend who had volunteered to help me get an external hard drive. He shook his head at the idea of going to an electrical store and then proceeded to show me how things worked in Romania. Using a web site we found a couple of hard drives that looked promising and arranged a meeting with the seller of one. We took the metro a bit further out of town and met a guy on the street corner and after inspection and exchange of the cash I had my new external hard drive. It was new and light so ... read more

May 17th to May 19th. Back to Bucharest! We hadn't planned on going back to Bucharest but it made the most sense being that our next stop was Brasov almost straight North through Bucharest. We emailed the Funky Chicken and our friends that we were Surprise!, coming back. Laura and James were waiting for us at the hostel. It was so good to be together again! And Anna was working at the Funky Chicken, too! We had a great time in Bucharest, as always, our second time around. And we taught Laura and James how to play pitch which is the card game that my grandparents would play. They learned quickly and proceeded to beat the pants off of Tages and I all night until Laura had to catch her bus home. ... read more

May 7th, Thursday....Oh Bucharest, where do I begin? Let's start with our celebratory drinks on Sky Europe flight #NE3208 to Bucharest. We were celebrating for many reasons. We had not slept in over 36 hours, we had stayed all night in Amsterdam at the Centraal Station and then at Schipol Airport. Our flight from Amsterdam to Vienna included an 8 hour layover. We even had to exit the airport and recheck in. But we had made it and had our second wind knowing we would be in Romania soon. Romania was one of the countries we have been most looking forward to visiting. Our plans once we landed were to head to our hostel, The Funky Chicken. I have to admit this night was one I had been dreading since leaving Minnesota b/c the Bucharest airport ... read more

Over the years, my Easter city breaks have become consistent, enjoyable, and, most significant of all, highly memorable experiences, and although this was booked in place of a cancellation I was forced to make due to a schedule change for a flight to Kiev, pre-departure reading boded very well for this trip. Upon arrival at Bucharest's Otopeni airport, I met up with my travelling companion from the Scotland trip of the previous month, and we were heading towards the city centre filled with anticipation as to what the city might hold in store for us. The hotel (Lev Or) scored highly on just about all counts - location, cleanliness, breakfast, price, and general facilities (dig those jacuzzi bathtubs!), and an itinerary which had been put together in the lead-up to the trip seemed like it would ... read more

I finally arrived in Bucharest after a week of wandering the mother continent. It was a relief to arrive back. The best part was they finally fixed the streets coming back from the airport. I was expecting to be on the airport bus for hours but it only took 20 minutes to get to Piata Victoriei. It was the best surprise ever! I spent the week out and about, immersed in cultural life and parks. There are a few changes since January, signs of progress. Unfortunately, none of it is happening around Lipscani, which still looks pretty much like the picture I took. There are the same old excuses, the recession blah blah blah. But its been like that for two years, so that's what it is. All I will say is the wooden platforms are ... read more

Good news for Romania fans, lovers of Bucharest, the curious, the bored, the bold and the beautiful...I will soon be back in Bucharest. I didn't think it would happen so quickly, but I have a ticket. Be assured by the end of March you will get some new pictures of Bucuresti, hopefully in its spring glory. So, stay tuned... ... read more

I know it is so post-holiday, but the last pictures I took in Bucharest coincide with my last entry (Dec. 26), so here is a flashback of 2008: Before Christmas, I attended a holiday concert at the Atenul Roman (or Romanian Athenium). For those foxy followers of my blog, I have already photographed the Atenu from the outside, so this set of pictures are from inside the concerthall. The Atenu was officially opened in 1888 (yes, I have a pictures of it) and is a very classy building designed by a Frenchman, Albert Galleron, at the turn of the century. Another claim to the "Paris of the East" title. There was a campaign to raise money for finshing the building, which asked every person to donate one leu, or the equivilent of a penny, to finish ... read more

I recently visited the hottest street in Bucharest of street art. It was, appropriately, named after Arthur Verona, a painter. Though he would not recognize the style of the artwork on his street, I think he would appreciate the gesture. I am not as up on all the obscure Romanian personages as I should be, so I looked him up. He was a turn of the century artist who gave up a military career to paint. He studied in Vienna, Paris and Munich before settling in Bucharest. He was part of the "Baia Mare" school of painters and worked on landscapes, portraits, nudes, and fresco work, particulary at the Catacuzino Palace in Bucharest. His workshop in Piata Victoriei burned down, unfortunately, so a great deal of his original work has been lost to time. His work ... read more
