I got back into Focsani in ample time to find Anamaria and initiate my new idea of snapping photos of the books I sent to them as a short-term alternative to getting a full database file. Talking to Ana showed me how innovative the Focsani people were in absorbing the books and putting them on the shelves for the patrons. In fact, “officially” these books are still in storage and she indiceted that it may be years until the libraries of Baia Mare and Suceava process the books. This makes A. and her staff/volunteers my heroes. All the hot babes seemed to come out as I was getting ready to leave. I met at least 4 girls in the library as I was gearing-up to go. grrr… A. got me to the bus station in plenty ... read more

Before going to Bucharest we stopped in the small town of Timisoara, Romania. We walked to our hotel, which was actually towards the outside of the city, but still a short distance from the train station. We paid 23 EUR per night for a very nice hotel room. It was a large room with two full size beds and a bathroom with a shower and a Jacuzzi. We arrived late at night, and wanted nothing more than to go to sleep, but that proved to be a bit of a challenge the first night. The hotel had a banquet hall that happened to be hosting a wedding reception that night. We could hear and feel the loud bass coming from next door until about 6 in the morning! The next day we awoke at a pretty ... read more

5 May 2010 After a sleepless night on the overnight train from Ankara, we arrived in Istanbul on the Asian side early morning and caught a ferry over to Europe. Istanbul from this viewpoint is absolutely gorgeous. We enjoyed the short and cold ferry ride over to the European continent. Nina, our tour leader, led us to the Constantine Hotel, which is the main Intrepid hotel here in Istanbul. We were able to leave our luggage and went with the others to a Turkish ‘McDonalds” type of place to have breakfast. We said our good byes, as this was the last morning of the trip and went to check out the Grand Bazaar. It was around 9am at this stage. The Grand Bazaar was very different from most of the other markets we had been to. ... read more

That was a quick week of travel, as in two weeks I have been in four countries (We've decided against Kosovo). Mostly just seeing the capital cities, though, as there is no time on this journey to see the 'good stuff' although city life anywhere is interesting enough... So, from my last entry, leaving Macedonia, the train left early evening so went to watch Avatar to pass the time. It was a decent way to spend three hours. Packing up at the hostel, the owner's MASSIVE puppy stomped on the bag of pizza-flavour crisps saved for the overnight train journey and they exploded all over the main room... no more midnight snack for us :( ... We sat in the most uncomfortable, budget-looking seats as we didn't know where our tickets were good, then spent the ... read more

After our first visit only involving the McDonalds of Gara de Nord before heading to Chisinau, we hoped to make more of this visit... which began... in McDonalds. Although in fairness this was to have a coffee after a long night train. The coffee was also much needed due to the fact we were using public transport to get to the hostel, always confusing when you have absolutely no idea how. In fact, it took us an hour to find the correct bus stop and buy a ticket and even then we got off at the wrong stop, although this was only one further down the line. Anyway, we found the hostel, have a twin private room and all is well. As usual, a nap followed the night train. Once human again, we ventured out to ... read more

As part of a work trip I was able to spend a day running around Bucharest to have a look at a few bits and pieces. I was lucky enough to be staying at one of the nicest hotels, so started the day with a swim in the stunning bean shaped pool before heading out on a tour, it was a very hot day. First we went to the square where it all kicked off back in 1989, revolutionary square. Old Nicolas and his wife were captured on the top of a building trying to escape the people and where soon after executed. But our first major stop after about an hour of driving out of Bucharest was a monastery. More importantly, it is said to be the tomb of Dracula....ooooo .... however, the tour guide ... read more

Going two days without a shower is never a good thing. Its even worst if you are in the middle of summer, lugging around over 20kg of luggage, sweating profusely and then being stuck in confined areas with others. I feel sorry for the people I shared the train cabin with and the people I shared the taxi with. Another thing that I have learnt that is never good, is doing back to back overnight buses/trains. Although I am incredibly tired, I did really enjoyed the train ride. I was in a cabin with other backpackers and they were incredibly good company. We talked all night, and at times we were all standing in the passage way with half our bodies out the windows dodging trees as they whooshed past (there aren't many rules in this ... read more
