Haystacks, grazing cows, organic corn, fruit trees. Fields against a backdrop of mountains. Horse carts share the road with cars and both have to watch out for cows on the side of the road. We ate fruit straight from the trees and drank milk right after it came from the cow. ... read more

I arrived in Bucharest early in the evening so I went out for a couple of drinks and a meal before heading back to the hostel. I was surprised to find out that when I got back to there a party going on in its grounds. From what I could gather (as I had myself had a few drinks by then) it was a France appreciation society and they had invited lots of French expats for the evening. They didn't mind me gatecrashing!! I spent the following day wandering around Bucharest, it has the second largest building in the world (behind the Pentagon) - the palace of the parliament. It measures 270 m (890 ft) by 240 m (790 ft), 86 m (282 ft) high, and 92 m (302 ft) underground. It has 1,100 rooms, 2 ... read more

I am heading north from Brasov, but I had to go south to Bucharest because that is how the trains run. I am only here for one day, but I'll probably come back again. This isn't the most beautiful city, with endless rows of concrete apartment blocks leftover from Ceaucescu's idea of urban planning. But there are many vibrant cafes, restaurants and shops to visit. The metro is modern, efficient, clean and spacious. The city is appealing despite the sprawling concrete. I am staying at Hello Hotel, which I really like for its clean interior design, wired internet, aircon and other modern conveniences, but the sign on the exterior doesn't have the last letter lit, which gives the wrong impression of the hotel. Something interesting--so many times I've walked into a restaurant or pub in Romania ... read more

I have discovered the most effective way to get the stranger sitting next to you on a hot bus bothered enough to change seats and move away: start knitting. On the bus to Nerja, I sat next to the window for the nice views- the seaside, cliffs, green hills scattered with wild flowers and windmills, and houses (well, shacks, really) made of tin and tarp but with new fancy cars parked in the muddy yard beside them ... and- although the bus was not by any means full- some older, hairy, sweaty man opted to sit right next to me, despite the vacant seats around me. Usually I have my bag occupying the seat next to me to avoid this annoyance from happening, but on this particular ride it was at my feet. Then the chap ... read more

I have a book about football in Eastern Europe that basically describes Romania as not a very easy country to like - a cross between the appalling and the appealing. I have also have a friend who when inter-railing around Europe in the mid 1990s described being so scared on arrival at Bucharest’s Gare du Nord, that he and his band of merry men got straight back on the next train to anywhere..........well he actually put it a bit more bluntly than that, but this could end up being family reading! However before filing Bucharest in the pigeon hole of your mind, somewhere next to Iraq and Libya and just up from Helmand province, as a place to avoid at all costs, it is worth considering that places change and one man’s hell is another man’s ... read more

The Palatul Parlamentului. The Palace of Parliament. After the pentagon, the largest administrative building in the world - using square footage for the measure. And the third largest in the world by cubic footage, right behind Cape Canaveral. Right here in Bucharest. And visible from the balcony of my apartment! In the 1984, the former Romanian dictator, Ceaşescu, had a vision of this immense Casa Poporului (House of the People). But at the time it was more popularly known as the Casa Nebunului (Madman’s House)! Ceaşescu had one fifth of the historic heart of old Bucharest razed, housing the former inhabitants of the district in tiny apartments that forced them to turn their dogs out on the street - a problem to this very day as packs of dogs still wander the streets. But the project ... read more

26-6-2007 Back to Bucharest The bus stop is a wonderful place to sit and wait. High on the mountain you are surrounded by the view of other mountain tops. There is a bench under a pretty tree. I had met an old lady out with two cows the previous morning who had bewailed my single state and given me directions. She sees me waiting and comes and sits beside me. We chatted and shared details of our respective families. We both agreed that you couldn’t expect children to stay living with you. Her cows circled us. They are both hobbled as are many animals in these parts. The bus eventually arrived and the driver gave me and my companion a very suspicious look. When I attempted to sit down in the minibus he stopped me and ... read more

Late June 2007 Days of the Ancestors and Obor Market My journey back to the UK started on Sunday evening so I had a couple of days to spare in Bucharest. One evening I went to the Athenaeum, Bucharest’s most revered concert hall. It seats only 800 people and is a beautiful little palace with slender marble columns and sweeping stairways. I was greeting with much warmth by my friends there. I however, felt tired and stressed and unable to fit back into my old life again so easily. One of the features of Romanian life is that traditions are still very strong. Something known as a Ziua Moşilor (roughly translated “day of the ancestors”) occurs periodically throughout the year. The one just before Easter is characterized by people bringing willow branches to church. That weekend ... read more
