... read more

The Monastery was stunning. Up in the hills recently restored and turned into a hotel by some rich cod fisherman. You can stay there for about $100 per night the air was so pure and still we had pre dinner drinks on the terrace before dinner and the pork was cooked in the original over from the 1300’s. OK this is the life. Its amazing how easily a group of grownups can become like little children again being herded around by the tour leader. I never thought I would like it but it makes it sooooo easy. All responsibility is taken out of your hands. The trouble will be with the waist line. The weather is great 28-30 degress and we are so both chilled out. So yesterday up for breakfast then out to a museum ... read more

OK This is the life! Didn’t want to wake up this morning but had to be up for breakfast and ready for the bus for the tour of Porto at 9am (I know what it sounds like) Porto is just gorgeous. We had a tour missed getting a photo of this really funny sight of a dog leaning on the window sill of a very old apartment building in the sun. Of course here was yet another beautiful church this time Baroque. Then we got off the bus and did our own thing. We came back by funicular to the bottom and then walked along the river bank back to the boat in time for lunch. Porto is just lovely and not so many tourists. Then off to the port maker for the tour and class ... read more

So today is my day to explore Porto. Maria's friend that I met last night, Alberto, came to pick me up around 10am and from there we took a bus and a train south about 30 miles or so to Porto. The city is much larger and more beautiful than I thought. It sits on the ocean with the River Duoro (Golden River) running through it. The river used to be used to transport wine from the vineyards outside the city down to the centre area to be sold but now it simply divides Porto from V.N. Gaia, the city right across the river from Porto. I would get a bunch more historical tidbits from my tourguide Alberto the rest of the day (thanks Alberto!!!) The downtown area of Porto is fantastic, particularly along the river. ... read more

Today is my last day here, quite sad. Definitely going to miss everyone a lot. Got up late on account of being up till this morning. After finally getting going Catia drove us out to Gaia for a lunch typical in Alentejo. Once again I loved it and once again they did not believe me ha. Played a little geocache in the afternoon. For everyone who doesn't know what that is it is a game organized online where people post caches and instruction on how to find them by leaving simply their GPS coordinates. Then you use some sort of GPS tracker to find it and then using the clues they give you to find the final spot. Its a real cool way to explore parts of your city that you have never been to before. ... read more

Today is really just a travel day so I do not have too much to write about. Fortunately for all my avid readers out there I am currently on a 2.5 hour flight from London Stansted to Porto, Northern Portugal. Actually just crossing the English Channel now and all I can think about is Band of Brothers. I have to say Stansted is a peculiar airport. Most of the flights in and out of there are on budget airlines like RyanAir and easyJet. This means you check-in with no particular gate to go to. So you and all the other travelers just sit around in groups looking up at the ETA boards waiting for your gate to be put up on the big screen. Then when one is finally put up all the people on that ... read more

Kirsten, the Aussie girl I met in Eastern Europe, assured me that normal weekends are for seeing the UK but long weekends must be spent in Europe. So last weekend, being the May Day public holiday weekend, we got some cheap flights to Porto, Portugal. Being a few 100kms South we felt sure it was going to be beach weather but even with plenty of blue sky and sunshine...low 20s is still a bit chilly for that! The comforting thought was that it had dropped back below 10 degrees in London with rain and even rumours of snowflakes! Porto is a gorgeous Unesco listed town built around a river. What made it unique though, was that the river is almost a bit of a ravine making the cliff faces on either side stunning scenery. The mouth ... read more
