When we arrived in Porto we managed to find an open tour office and decided to take the next day (Friday) off (so to speak) and let a tour company take us for a trip up the Douro River. We had a majestic journey 100km up the river. This journey took 8 hours and we’re now returning on the train which is also very scenic. This is a fantastic way to see the Douro region. We travelled on the river on a lovely traditional boat and were accompanied by a group of very nice French-Canadians. After we left the city area we entered a stunning area of the river which was surrounded by forests, large boulders and cute bays and towns. Further up we entered the Port wine region where the river is surrounded by terraced ... read more

Being in Porto, Portugal has brought about more time for reflection and thought than it has directly taught either of us anything. But there are two primary contributors to this fact: (a) we can no longer understand any written or spoken word, and; (b) even if we could understand anything, at this point in the trip, we would likely opt to spend our time in the sun instead of the museum(s). I have come close to needing the use of my traveler's health insurance. I have yet to hurt myself, but on many occasions I have come close to stepping off ledges, steep curbs, or simply twisting an ankle on large and scattered pieces of stone that make up a typical roadway. But the 'unexpected' nature of its urban landscape speaks to the visual marvels it ... read more

I'm in Portugal, and a few things have to be said before I delve into this blog: 1.Porto is beautiful. 2.I have a sunburn. 3.You can buy bottles of wine in the grocery stores for $0.89. There is much to be said about Porto, but there is also much to be said about the past two weeks! We have been blessed with the presence of our two guest bloggers, Dennis and Alison, sharing their perspectives of Europe with you. I should fill in the gap between our entrance into Germany and where we are now. We pick up from Berlin, where our visit was extremely educational. We learned an absolute ton about WWII and communist Germany - it was incredibly humbling to be in Berlin, a city that wrote much of the history of the 20th ... read more

Apesar da excentricidade do traje ... read more

Tuesday 12.1.2010 day 89 peso da regua We got a 10 am bfast served in our room and we slept so well it was so nice to have a full European bfast with fantastic Portuguese (very nice) Coffee. The locals told as that this is the most snow they have had in Portugal in 70 year! Lucky we got to see it! We decided to have a look at Porto the home of port. One thing my driver learnt is that our ‘sat nav’ has no idea how to find its way thru the second largest city in Portugal, which it only about 600 years old and most of the streets are cobble stones. Porta is very easy to get around and is incredible scenic. After several serious altercations between my driver and ‘sat nav’ we ... read more

Birthday blog- Well, I’m 28 and in Porto, Portugal. Everything is ok for the most part; I had an incident occur when I didn’t end up printing my boarding pass prior to travel. Once I did arrive though I had a pretty easy time making it into the town center and to my hotel. The hotel itself is quaint, enough room for a twin-size bed and a television set. I decided to go out and try to locate one of the gay bars I researched. Again, I utilized the metro system, which is in fact, much like Madrid’s in that it is very clean and easy to use. I made it to the bar to find out that it was closed. I don’t believe that any gay bar is open during the week. I was a ... read more

Leaving Salamanca for Portugal, we had good 4-lane roads most of the way. Crossing the border into Portugal, we drove over the mountains toward Lisbon, then headed North toward our destination, Porto, famous as the home of Port wine, and second largest city in the country. It was a fairly long drive (around 5 hours), but as we entered Porto, things went a little sideways for us. The city is bigger than we expected, and our knowledge of Portuguese is more limited than our understanding of Spanish, so we had more trouble reading signs. We crossed the Douro River, then became quickly confused as to where to go. Eventually we saw a sign reading "Centro Comercial." We assumed that meant the road would take us to the center of the city, which is essentially where we ... read more
