To end the year (2007) in our traditional manner the PBA members gathered for our Annual Dinner at the Oporto Cricket & Lawn Tennis Club. With 28 people present this turned out to be a great evening, with good food, raffle prizes and a lot of socializing. A questionnaire was completed by members to help with the planning of future activities / events, The President Peter Evens thanked the members who had supported the PBA through the year and outlined the planned activities for 2008, leading to a lot of anticipation for the new year ... read more

In November 2007 Mrs Cora Aspey, the President of the “Porto Bristol Assoçiacão” for all these years decided to return to the United Kingdom to be closer to her family. Cora had continued the work for many years that her husband the Reverend Albert Aspey had started. We all wish Cora, and her Cat, every happiness in their new home, in Monmouth. The President Elect Peter Evens, whose parents used to live in Clifton, Bristol, joined Cora and some other Association members, for a cream tea at the Oporto Cricket & Lawn Tennis Club to say farewell. ... read more

Porquê e Para Quê a Associação Porto - Bristol?

Hey everyone! So apparently I was in a bad mood when I got to Porto. Then the streets were poorly labeled. So what should have been like a five minute walk was like 30 minutes at least. What sucked is the place has TONS of big hills. Its crazy. SO I was hot and tired when I got to the hotel. I decided to relax, take a shower, lie down, have a cup of coffee. I was still frustrated so I decided to go for a walk. Now that I didn´t have my luggage I absoluately LOVED this place. It was so beautiful. The streets are cute...stones. There are wonderful old buildings. I would have liked to have spent more then one night here. It was incredible. A lot of places were closed as it is ... read more

All Aboard the Pimp Train to Porto After the hell train that was Madrid to Lisbon, we got ourselves a pimp train to Porto, home of the Port wine. Port wine means dessert wine to you beginner wine drinkers. I am now officially considered an intermediate Port wine taster. If you’re now attempting to decifer what an intermediate wine taster would be, I would use this guide: Drinks Vinegar (Wyatt Culbert) Ghetto Wine Drinker (Bryan Eyslee, Brendan McNerney) Just Above Ghetto Wine Drinker (Cory Boyd) Beginner Wine Drinker (Caitlin McNerney) Intermediate Wine Drinker (Brian Tatko) Expert Wine Drinker (Tara Costello, Cheryl Eisenhour) Stallion Wine Drinker (Becca Pementell) Grand Wizard Wine Drinker (Thomas and Fay Tatko) Please note that all wine drank in Chico comes in a box or below $10 bottle and usually has a picture ... read more

(November 17th - 19th) On the short and very fast train ride to Porto was a chance to finally view more of the coast and countryside of Portugal. I plugged into Chrissy’s mix of Portuguese music from Brazil and enjoyed the sights. The west coast of Portugal is just beautiful, and it made the journey go by quite quickly. One quick bus ride from the train station and we were at our newest temporary home. Porto is famous for pretty much one thing, its port wine. So Brian and I planned on taking our two days here to relax, recoup, and indulge ourselves in all of the sweet delights Porto had to offer. Porto is an interesting layout, more of what I picture Brazil to look like than anything. Many many stacked houses that look as ... read more

Well, all good things come to an end and sadly so does life at the villa. It has been a wonderful week of pure relaxation, short trips of exploration and adventure seeing beautiful sights,, meeting smiling friendly people who laugh with us as we struggle with different languages, and sharing good times and culinary wonders with our travelling companions. Friday morning we left the villa for a last day and overnight in Porto before continuing on our different paths. Today two will leave Porto in the afternoon and fly off to Amsterdam for a brief three day visit before returning to Edmonton. On Saturday Lynn and one other person will be on the to catch a flights to Heathrow in London for an overnight stay before continuing on to Vancouver and Edmonton. From Edmonton Lynn ... read more

Saturday September 20: Arrived in Porto at 8am, only to find out that Portugal is in a different time zone an hour ahead of Spain! At 7am on Saturday, nothing was open, so we found a nice park to sit in and eat the sandwiches that our host families had prepared for us. In Portugal we realized that we didn’t know the name or address of the hostal we had booked (oops! Live and learn, I guess). We found our way to the historic Ribeira District on the river and explored a bit before finding our way to an internet café to look-up the info that we needed to find the hostal. While exploring we walked along the Ponte de Dom Luis I (bridge) that was inspired by the Eiffel Tower; it gave us a great ... read more
