MOTOTOUR 2007 Day 9-10: La Carridad to Porto Distance: 455 km (of 8,667 km total) It was difficult to wake up with damp and rain. Slugs left their slimy trails all over our new tent. We skipped breakfast, did what we had to do to leave and were off to Santiago de Compostelle! There, the skies turned sunny again. We found our way through winding cobble-stoned streets in the old city, and parked the motorcycle in the old town right by the police station. When we enquired as to whether would be safe to leave the bike there with our luggage on it, some officers jested with us that they would personally guard our bike, and one stuck out his hand for a donation It would have been faus pas to offer them anything of course! ... read more

It was with some excitement that we woke up early and went to work on Friday 25 May. The sound of the luggage bag wheels rattling over the street pavement was music to our ears and it brought a smile to our face in the knowledge that we would leave work early, at 3.30pm, and head straight to Stanstead airport to fly to Porto that afternoon. Porto is not a place we knew an awful lot about- I, like always, can associate major European cities with their futbol team and the Uruguayan or Australian player who happens to play there (this time its Fucile!)- But other than that we knew nothing about the place and our expectation was much the same! We arrived in Porto after a 2 hour flight at 10.30pm this is usually ... read more

My brilliant friend, old Dave Bowman decided to pay me a visit for my birthday and to run the London Marathon. So good seeing the old geezer again, top class guy. On a bit of a whim we decided to go to Portugal and Spain the next morning at 7am. Seemed like a good idea at the time, and it probably would have been if we had not had a bender the night before till 3 in the AM and then raced to Stansted only to miss our plane, have to pay some more money and catch the flight that night. We made the most of the day and had some wonderful mushroom risotto soup and visited the National museum. Jumped on the night flight, arrived in Porto and made our way into the city ... read more

4/20/07 Lisbon--Porto After arriving in Porto via bus and obtaining a map from a nearby hotel, we then proceeded to stand around for a while trying to figure out which way we needed to go to get to or hostel. Eventually we managed to orientate ourselves and make our way to our hostel. After checking in and dropping off our bags we went out to see Porto. We only had the remainder of the day and therefore began by walking to one of the bridges that we had crossed while on the bus. The view from the bridge was beautiful. I ended up leaving Jenny and Sudie, who headed back to the hostel to make dinner, and attempted to find a cache (my last chance in Portugal). Once again I was unsuccessful; since the cache was ... read more

Thursday we visited Sonae Industria, Sonae Sierra, and Fortis. Sonae Industria is a manufacturer of laminated wood, and we got to tour their production and warehouse facilities. Sonae Sierra was an interesting company to hear about because they design shopping and leisure spaces. Having an interest in marketing, and especially how shelf displays and store layouts affect purchasing behaviors, it was neat to see some of their properties. Their competitive advantage is the innovation they put into the designs of their shopping centers. Actually, one of their properties - Via Catarina, a shopping mall - is right down the street from our hotel. We walked down there this evening to check it out, and the food court was nice - it was designed to look like the outside of little European village buildings (similar to some ... read more

Tuesday we visited the Agencia Portuguesa para o Investimento (API), a government organization responsible for investment promotion, and ICEP Portugal, a government organization responsible for export promotion. Wednesday we visited Mota-Engil (a construction company), had lunch with MBA students from the University of Porto, and had two lectures at the university (acquisition strategies by Portuguese companies and inward & outward investment in Portugal). I was looking forward to getting a little bit of introduction on the Portuguese economy and initiatives since joining the EU (like we did in Dublin), but things here don't seem to be nearly as organized as in they are in Ireland. Portugal just doesn't quite seem to have their act together when it comes to advancing its economy and making itself competitive within the EU. Granted, they started out pretty low and ... read more

Dublin Photos Europe » Portugal » porto By Amanda MApril 9th 2007 Here are some photos I took in Dublin that I didn't get a chance to post. Enjoy!! Also, some interesting notes from the Guinness tour: - Nigeria drinks more Guinness than the US and Canada combined - Because of the levels of iron, magnesium, etc. in Guinness, it used to be advertised as "good for you" and "Guinness for strength" ... they actually used to give Guinness to blood donors (a pint of Guinness for a pint of blood) and to new mothers after giving birth to replenish nutrients in the body - Guinness' symbol is a harp, and when Ireland decided to use a harp as its national symbol, it told Guinness it would h... read more

Not much going on today. Walked around to shops and bought some souvenirs. Then spent most of the afternoon working as much as I could make myself work on one of the 7-page single-spaced papers due at the end of this class. (grrrrr...) This wraps up our long weekend (and most of our free time) in Porto, and class starts back up tomorrow. We are supposed to be getting our "Portugal introduction" tomorrow and will be visiting agencies/organizations that focus on bringing in investments and promoting exports.... read more
