Ola! I'm in Portugal where they speak Portuguese. I've never heard so much Portuguese in my life (that's probably expected, isn't it...) Porto is really cool and hilly and dirty. You can definately tell that Portugal has less money than Spain by the prices of food (dirt cheap) and the rubbish on the streets. It's a really pretty city though. Today, I went to visit the wine cellars and got to try different kinds of Port wine. I don't think I really like Port very much but it was really fun. Did you know that there is white port? I liked none of the ones I tried...they were kinda gross. All of the cellars on along the River Duoro and you can walk around and go to each one. I had to find the ones that ... read more

Pri has her roots here, so naturally we had to visit :) Amongst other things we walked around in the very non-tourist streets of Matoshinos which was a nice change. Got a copy of the birth-certificate of her grandmother, but it turned out to be more difficult to find an address where she had lived before emigrating to Brasil. We also took a boat-trip on the Porto river and under the six bridges there.... read more

We,re leaving for Lisbon on the 2:15 train so we.ve been wandering the city for the morning. I love Portugal.it,s so beautiful. We at down by the river again on the city side of the Duormo where we ate last night. I had arroz con mariscos. Rice and shellfish in a casserole. That one dish was enough to feed 3 people easy!! That,s what we,ve been doing, eating a light breakfast at the hostel/hotel as most of them give you breakfast with the room maybe some pastry of fruit during the day and then the big meal at night since most restaurants in Spain and Portugal don,t even open until 7:30 or 6. We went to the cathedral this morning...what a climb. I'm definately getting into shape!! I am so amazed at how many things the ... read more

so today we´re off to isbon, but before we go i waned to write really quick about yesterday. last night i had port wine, and i have to say it´s the best thing i have ever tried in my life, i had three different kinds, a white, a ruby and a tawny. now the white was delicis, the ruby was fantastic, but the tawny...it tasted like liquid caramel. when i drank it it tasted like i was drinking caramel drizzled over fruit that was prefectly ripe. i don´t know how to explain it better than that....... it was amazing. i need to have more. last night we had dinner agian by the river, mom had about 12 lbs of seafood (not really, the portion was just huge) and i had roasted goat...mmmmm..it was wonderful. i also ... read more

Here,s our second day in Porto. We seem to do much better when we spend two days in the same place.you can,t really discover a city in one, plus the second day gives us a chance to sleep late and recharge. The hotel (hostal) is great except for the fact that the laundry it listed on the website whhen we booked meant laundry that is sent out which is very expensive anfd takes 49 hours.no good. That means we was panties in the bathroom and hope the rest of our clothes don,t stink!! Evita went to the beach yesterday...you can get there right offf the metro (subway) and I went to the cathedral 1300,s.very dark and gothic... way up on a hill in the old section of town. The streets around the cathedral are a maze ... read more

lots of pictures to show tdoay! we´re in portugal, and there´s two things i want to mention. 1. it´s hot. it´s 9:45 in the morning right now and already it´s really really warm. yesterday i finally got to go to the beach ....it was nice...and i swam in the ocean...and we went out to dinner last night we ate right next to the river, it was really pretty, great food too, mom had some fish and in her excitment and hunger forgot the general rule about fish which is...it has bones. lots of little tiny bones. she survived though and my chicken was so tender, it was the first great meal in a while. haven´t had a chance to try port wine yet, i´ll make sure to so that before we leave. portugal is known for ... read more

Well, I did have to consume some of the local product. As they same, when in Rome..... Anyway, Porto rocks! Again, the architecture was beautiful and Porto had the extra advantage of being on the river Douro and therefore was even more picturesque than either Lisbon or Sintra. I had a short cruise along the river, called the 5 bridges tour for obvious reasons, and later tasted some good and not so good ports at 3 cellar doors. For some reason they seem to be big fans of chilled white port. Sweet or dry, neither is to my liking. The tawny and ruby ports, however, were worth the wait. I also did a tour at Taylor’s cellar door which was interesting. The vineyards are well up the river, Porto is simply the storage facility so it ... read more

Hello Reader. Mike and I had contacted a couchsurfer named Joao in Porto who was more than happy to host us for the two days that we would be there. Joao was by far the most bizarre host I've had. I loved him immediately. I really enjoy people who are different and are comfortable with that. Joao was an unemployed photographer who sometimes would DJ under a female's name. He had a few party wigs and the high-heals to match. See what I mean? But I knew it was love when he woke up after our first night at his flat, wearing nothing but a towel, and greeted Mike and I shouting 'Who are you?! How did you get in here?!' Mike and I nearly died. He was the coolest! Again, I digress. Mike and I ... read more

'Ola! This blog recounts my trip to Portugal last month, my first journey to the continent and a much-needed escape from the drudgery of London in mid-winter. Back in December, Kate (genius friend who masterminded the trip to Scotland) suggested we take advantage of the new year seat sales that the discount carriers (Ryan Air, Easy Jet, etc) put on in January to lure desperate, pale-skinned and swollen Londoners away from their few quid remaining from the excesses of Christmas. And frankly, a trip to the continent is far less expensive than the consequences of the new year sales here in London, where one could find themselves in a total frenzy of bargain heaven. This is a lesson I learnt early upon my arrival in London - I am still recovering from the cost of having ... read more
