You’ll think all I do is look down. Well, there’s some truth in that since I do a lot of walking—streets, sidewalks, alleyways, and stairs. Lots of stairs! I walked up from the river on Sunday via a curving alleyway of stairs. The curves prevented me from seeing how far I had yet to go. Otherwise, I probably wouldn’t have started, but once I got half way up, the choice to go down looked worse than continuing up, especially since I eventually needed to go up. The other way up would have been longer but not so steep. One more comment on the women in high heels and pointy shoes—they are the mothers of Portugal’s great soccer players, whose athletic agility, I’m convinced comes from their mothers, not their fathers, who wear very sensible shoes.
