World War II and shipping history to be precise. We’ve spent the last couple of days in Gdansk with Aidan and Nicholas and had a very interesting time. Although there is only so much of the grim realities of war that you can inflict on 11 and 12 year olds. So we skipped a bit and finished with a couple of real tanks, a US one and a Russian one. The Museum we visited is the very new (opened last year) impressive Museum of WWII. The architecture is stunning with a large central glass and steel structure with a long low building following an actual street that was destroyed. The section for children is very well done following the fortunes of two children living in an apartment and showing what happened within and, using video projection ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! When I woke up this morning Joanna had already left for work so it was a good thing that we said our goodbyes last night. I didn't have much time before my plane would leave for home so my only plan was to walk around a bit in Gdańsk before catching the train to the airport. My aim was to take in the general atmosphere of the city even though I wouldn't have the opportunity to delve deeper into it. The first sight of the city that I came to was the main train station itself, Gdańsk Główny Railway Station, built 1896–1900. It survived both world wars but was damaged by a fire in 1945, it has since been renovated and it's a really beautiful building well worth some attention. As I ... read more

23 - 24 juillet 1er septembre 1939.

Hello fellow travellers and blogaholics, this time we're trying our hand at sampling the delights of the Tri-City, which is essentially a conurbation formed of the three separate cities of Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia, all located along the northern coast of Poland in the region of Pomerania. Inspired yet? Well, to break you in, a little history probably won't go amiss, so it is worth noting that Gdansk, the most prominent of the three cities, is famous as the location of the break-out of the second world war, plus, on a more positive note, the origin of Lech Walesa and his solidarity movement which led him to become one of the most famous Poles in Polish history. Back then, the shipyards were probably the backbone of the region's economy, and although they still exi... read more

When you talk about Gdansk, it’s worth mentioning Sopot and Gdynia as well... After all they are one ‘city’ – Tricity that is... And yet I can’t say I know all these three cities the same way. Gdynia would have to be the city that I know the least about and that I have visited the least amount of times, maybe because it’s the furthest away from Elblag? I never gave it much thought to be honest but Gdynia is usually not on my to-do list... It used to be pretty good for shopping as all the shopping was centred around one looong street so you could get everything you wanted to buy in one go... Now with all the shopping centres around, there is simply no need to go there anymore... at least for shopping ... read more

Go to Gdansk - NOW! You won't regret it!! We certainly didn't. I have to admit though, I couldn't imagine what there could be to see and do there, because my judgement was clouded by 1980s newsreels of shipyards, striking dockers and Lech Wałęsa. It turned out to be a beautiful place with a fascinating history. We stayed at Hostel 22 which isn't too long a taxi journey from the bus or train stations. It is a lovely hotel, and not really a hostel despite the name. There are two slight negative points though. The murals on the walls of the bedrooms may give you nightmares! Ours was decorated with a picture of a fish market but I kept thinking the man in it was about to slap me in the face with a wet fish! ... read more

First Day - Gdansk Zoo and Ptasi Raj Nature Reserve On the first day, I started with the Zoo in the morning as that was something I definitely wanted to do. I was slightly worried about getting the whole zoo done in one day due to the fact that it is still on the winter closing time until the end of the month and closes at three, however I did manage to get it done, though I was there until a couple of minutes after closing time and didn't have much time to go back and look at anything again. Although the zoo grounds are huge, I think about 100 ha are just unused forest which is really nice and gives the zoo a very nice setting surrounded by forest and lots of wild birds including ... read more
