Cruise day 3 Coffee, kedgeree and communicating at sea July 17th 2019 The finess room is pretty small so when we see that there are classes, we decide to get up early to do our exercise before all the shenannigans. Consequently we are in the gym before 8 am, as you do on holiday, and I spend 30 minutes on the cross trainer. Bear in mind that you have to climb 7 flights of stairs to get to the gym first-there is a lift or two but...meh... I feel I have earned a hearty breakfast and so I have one. The restaurant today has a menu from which I order kedgeree and a buffet from which I have eggs royale, melon, bacon (which is available crispy and soft) as well as various fish and juices. And ... read more

Have you ever waited for a couple of hours for the sun to rise and it’s teasing you on the edge of the world, dotting up between distant islands, but just not quite making the effort? It was windy and cold, so by 2am we gave up and went to bed. That’s how my day ended - waiting for the sun to rise. Welcome to the Arctic Circle! My plan to start the day was to get up around 3am again to get a timelapse of the sunrise, but when it came down to it, I decided bed was better. Yesterday must have been long, as my sleep was also long and I didn’t wake until 10am. So breakfast was late and we missed the first landmark of note - some bridge. The next landmark was ... read more

Getting close to the Arctic Circle in the summer can only mean one thing (for me) - getting up at 3.15am for the sunrise! Hooray! I peered out of the porthole above my pillow and could see a sliver of pink between the mid blue of the sea and sky. It had been a bit dim last night, but not properly dark. Glyn wasn’t so keen at leaving a warm bed to stand on a windy deck, but as always, I knew better. We climbed up the many stairs of the silent ship, passing occasional staff cleaning pictures and other important jobs that can’t wait for a decent hour to be done. Like the majority of the ship, the front of Deck 10 was empty except for the sun loungers we’d dragged across yesterday. We were ... read more

Cruise day 4 A golden tour from Andalsnes and two annoying Maitre Ds July 18th 2019 Today was a pokey-stick-day. I have no idea where Claire gets her pokey sticks from but she manages to find one everywhere we go. Today she began poking me with her latest at 3:15am. Yes, that’s am. 3:15 in the morning. But I got up and we headed up on deck for what turned out to be quite a decent sunrise so I’m glad I persuaded Claire to join me. We were cruising down a fjord and so there were some decent photos to be had in the peace and quiet. Surprisingly not many other people joined us....only three in fact....maybe Claire has all the pokey sticks.... After a couple more hours sleep we got up properly and ate a ... read more

It’s crazy that we got up early (7.15 am) whilst on holiday to go to the gym, but it was the best way to avoid the Pilates and yoga classes. They also cost extra. I wanted to get in as much whale watching as possible, so actually it makes sense. And let’s be honest, Glyn and I will doze off intermittently throughout the day what with all the sea air and food. After breakfast we headed up to the front of deck 10 where we’d met the whale watching gang yesterday. They work for an organisation called Orca and one lady was giving up teaching so that she could do Whale Cruise Conservation full time instead. Who knew that was a thing? The sun was shining and the sea very calm, so ideal for spotting marine ... read more

Cruise day 2 Posh togs and the ship bore July 16th 2019 Despite being warned that the clocks were going forward an hour we expected our Apple watches and iPhones to do their usual thing. But there’s no internet....so no automatic updating....so we walked through the lounge where we were due to see the talk on our first destination, Andalsnes and everyone was already there....over an hour early... Aah. Quick breakfast (really good!) and we sneaked back into the talk which by now was standing room only. Luckily we hadn’t missed much. Our devices are now the right time. Next up was a talk on Ice: Frozen Landscapes and Polar Seas where we sat at the front as Claire had left her glasses in the cabin. It was a bit warm in there and the speaker ... read more

Cruise day 1 Out of place on a ship July 15th 2019 I have been to many countries, had loads of fabulous and exciting experinces but never have I been as nervous as I have been about going on a cruise. One of Claire’s workmates used to work on the ship we are on (Fred Olsen’s Boudicca) and I’ve been pestering her with questions about what to wear, who will be on board, what we can and should take etc. Nikki valiantly answered all questions and even got us a free upgrade bless her. There are videos on the Fred Olsen website of people wearing something called Chinos and slacks with those jumpers that you wear round your neck so they probably only need to be one layer. I wear T-shirts and cargo trousers. There are ... read more

Blog 11 - Goodbye Bømlo ?? July 7 This morning we all arose early not wanting to be late when Reidar came. Thankful for the leftovers from yesterday’s feast; we broke our fast on Norwegian pancakes and lefse and herring and lamb. Then we waited... Finally it was time and we hauled our bikes and gear across the bridge along with Reidar’s large container now empty of water. Again we waiting but not long. Very soon Reidar’s car was seen coming up the road with his trailer for the bikes. Since we were ready early, Reidar took us on a tour of Meling and then on a different road back to the fast boat (we learned it is not called a ferry). We did have to stop once and re-do the bikes. Just before we got ... read more

Blog 10 Nesse Family Reunion The day had arrived - this afternoon Reidar was to pick us up about 2:00 for the grand family reunion. He would take us to where the tent was ready and waiting at the family home of Hans and Kristiana in Nesse! Of course the day started with sideways rain and looked very dismal. We had to hope it would clear by afternoon as seemed the norm. I had decided to make German potato salad to share with the family and had purchased the items needed on our bike home the previous night. I don’t recall our breakfast that morning but we were eating light as we knew there would be sooooo much food at the gathering. I went to work on the potato salad and then headed to the shower ... read more

Blog 9 - Friday July 5 From Beach to Bluff or A Swim in the Sea and A March Up the Mountain A day of swimming, cycling and hiking! I woke up this morning prepared to do what we were going to do yesterday but nobody was willing. I was determined this morning would be different so I showed up in the main room of the house in my swimsuit and said OK it’s time to go. Much to my amazement after some cajoling the others got dressed and we headed to the spot I had found on our bikes. I found this spot on our first day here when I had taken a ride to the end of our road and it seemed the perfect spot for a dip in the North Sea. Isabelle was ... read more
