Cruise day 1
Out of place on a ship July 15th 2019
I have been to many countries, had loads of fabulous and exciting experinces but never have I been as nervous as I have been about going on a cruise. One of Claire’s workmates used to work on the ship we are on (Fred Olsen’s Boudicca) and I’ve been pestering her with questions about what to wear, who will be on board, what we can and should take etc. Nikki valiantly answered all questions and even got us a free upgrade bless her.
There are videos on the Fred Olsen website of people wearing something called Chinos and slacks with those jumpers that you wear round your neck so they probably only need to be one layer. I wear T-shirts and cargo trousers. There are formal evenings....and a British evening.....oh my goodness!
There is also unlimited luggage which is pretty different from our usual holiday of cramming everything into a rucksack because we move around so much. So you think you’ve packed everything....and then you have to get it all in a Fiat 500....and then you get there and, sure enough, you hadn’t thought of or
forgotten something. Nothing important....yet.....that we can think of.
You drop your luggage off, park your car up and your luggage miraculously makes it to your cabin. This was another thing I had been fretting about....
But all is well. We have unpacked and fitted everything into the cupboards and managed to squeeze the suitcases under the bed....after having to lift the bed...
We have two portholes thanks to Nikki and the cabin is fine with the option to have a shower while you poo. Bonus!
We have found the free coffee machine, it’s only Nescafe but it’s coffee....well, sort of and the buffet where we had scones, jam and cream. Other drinks you pay for as the all inclusive option was expensive and there is no soft drinks option for me. You can pay for better coffee but we’ll see how it goes.
I was worried that there would be just old people in board and that has pretty much been justified. We did see someone without grey hair earlier but failed to get a picture. The music options in the room reflect the clientelle with jazz (bleeeuurrgghhh!!!), easy listening and country being amongst the
wildest options. No hang on, I did see the Beach Boys on there so it’s bang up to date.... Claire apparently saw someone else with a tattoo earlier but I am yet to verify this.
Due to waiting for some crew to arrive it’s 20:15 and we are still sat looking at the white cliffs of Dover. We were here at just after 2 and have explored the ship and found our favourite spot. This all feels a bit odd and I feel somewhat out of place but I know that adventure awaits!
Later now and we have had our five course meal. Almost. Bit of confusion with the menu so I only ended up with four courses...what am i playing at!?!? Each course was lovely but small and that extra salad course would have topped me up but hey.
I think a lot of the on board entertainment will come from people watching... A couple in our restaurant hardly spoke to each other, never smiled, asked for the restaurant temperature to be altered and then asked where their desserts were as they had a quiz to get to. They’re going to have a wild time...
I’ve heard that some people come on these cruises and don’t get off the ship....I’m thinking I’ll be mentioning them again....just remember these numpties for now.....
We’re having some fun though so that’s what matters-Claire can’t wait to get playing deck quoits for a start!
After visiting the Supper Club to make up for that missing salad it was time to retire for the evening. After having a look through the next day’s Daily atimes that is.... When we got back to the cabin we had a chocolate each on our pillows and a printed booklet of the following day’s activities. Claire is now unable to sleep as she is excited about tomorrow’s social foxtrot and the Swing’s The Thing show!!
