After a couple flight delays and one cancellation, I arrived in Bodo last Sunday. I thought I adjusted to the time difference and travel tiredness pretty well until three days in when I realized the pineapple juice I was drinking was actually orange or appelsin (in Norwegian). My dorm room is actually the Ikea floor model found in showrooms across North America. Over here you can smoke in your room, and unfortunately one of my roommates does. Some of my classes started last week, some tomorrow. I've picked up another class, Norwegian for foreigners. School's different here, more relaxed (you get scheduled time to do assigned reading) but it's only one week in. Lectures only go till the end of March with the last 2 to 3 months for field trips around Norway followed by oral ... read more

It is just simply amazing in Norway! I had it soo good when travelling around this country and I got very lucky with the weather from what I hear which of course makes it a lot better. After a couple of relaxing days in Oslo I started heading more North to a city called Trondheim about 1/4 of the way up in Norway, not a great deal to do in this city so spend the day with my French host walking around the place (he just arrived there as well) exploring. Not a very big place at all this city and since I only had one night there i didn't get to get out of the city into the country which I was really looking forward to. Just the bus and train trips between the places ... read more

Sometimes a story or a travel is best told in pictures. This is that kind of a story. This is the story of a place where I often travel for visiting friends and relatives. This place is a small community that lives mostly of agriculture as live stock and fishing. A place were you can find peace just by enjoying the beauty of your surroundings. A place were you can find beauty in every kind of weather and time of year. The place is Bø i Vesterålen. Its a small place 1 hour and 30 min drive from the city Harstad and 30 min drive from the city Sortland. This is the perfect place to travel if you enjoy being out in the nature in all its glory by: trekking the mountainsides, boating, cycling from one ... read more

My last couple days on Svalbard were solid. I went on a pricey boat tour that took me across the fjord to a set of glaciers that meet at the oceans edge. As we approached the glaciers there were seals laying on small icebergs just enjoying life. From the glaciers we cruised back across the fjord to the small town of Barentsburg. The town has a population of 600 and all consist of contract workers for the local coal mine. The coal mine is owned by a Russian company, and thus all of the workers are from Russia. This creates what is essentially a small Russian town located in Norway. The town had a rather bleak look to it, with mainly block buildings, and what I learned was "typical" Russian style. The town was complete with ... read more

Hello Everyone....or as they say here... Hei Hei. (They say it twice very quickly) We left Bergen and made our way to a little place called Rauland in the Telemark area. We stayed in a lodge way up on the Hardanger Mountain Plateau. Please excuse my spelling but we figure you guys probably won't know the difference anyway...:) Our guide, Øivind - whom all the women have fallen in love with by now - told us that every Norwegian is born with their skiis on and a backpack. It's kind of hard on the Mother!! This countryside looks like high mountain terrain. No trees but lots of berry bushes & moss. Cloudberries are the sought after berry here and if you find them, you don't tell anyone where they are. There is supposed to be reindeer ... read more

Ever since I was young I had three travel goals. Nr. 1. Going down under to Australia, Nr. 2. Going to Italy and Nr. 3. Going to as many places around the world as possible. During life so far I have been to Australia, I have been to Italy and I have been to many different places around the world but I still got many places to explore. I still have a hunger for traveling but now I also got a urge to share with other my experiences and hope to learn from others and get some good traveling tips from them. This blog will contain traveling stories from my small trips around my local area and from around the world as I am traveling, some pictures from my travel destinations and some tips about what ... read more

Hey Leute! A shorter entry today, but that's how it works when I find FREE INTERNET two days in a row. =) So I was feeling lazy this morning, but that was ok. There's a large viking reconstruction area / museum on my way through the islands, so I decided to check it out. Some farmer found pottery shards in his fields a number of years ago, and the archaeologists moved in and discovered the remains of the world's largest known viking longhouse, over 80 metres in length. You can see the original location of this and other buildings, as well as the reconstructed versions of a few of them. The reconstruction of the longhouse is really neat. 2/3s of it are as it would have looked 1000 years ago. One area has a bunch of workshop type ... read more

I've got only three letters to describe my last few days: WOW. Let me start from where I last left off. Wednesday morning I went down to the ferry dock in Bodø (pronounced more like 'budda', for the record). I got myself a ticket for the 3 hour trip to Moskenes, a hamlet near the southwestern end of the Lofoten Island chain. I'm in the process of working my way NE back towards the mainland. While I'm now 67 odd degrees north, I still don't get true midnight sun since It's now just over a month past the solstice. Back to light nights though! Anyways. So the ferry comes into the islands, and from a distance they look like a wall of mountains. As we dock, there's a fantastic view of these peaks soaring over the ... read more
