It's Sunday and another rainy day here in Norway. The fun-loving Norwegians are not their usual boisterous selves as Fall really starts to set in, it's getting dark much earlier now than a month ago, and we have all been pushed back by the wind. My roommate is really starting to feel the effects and I'm trying to keep her from coming down with S.A.D. (seasonal affective disorder). This weather is not entirely different from Juneau, but the quantity of the rain and the wind is so much more intense that I've found myself soaked to the bone a few days already this week, dragging myself back to my room with my teeth chattering from being so cold. I've only felt that a few times in Juneau in the 4 years that I was there. Here...it's ... read more

Five days in the land of midnight sun and reindeers If you follow this blog you know that I, Ake that is, two or three times a year can take a vacation when Emma has to be home working. As long as I visit places Emma doesn't want to see I am permitted to travel on my own. Emma is not very interested in visiting northern Norway but I have for several years been thinking that a trip up to the land of midnight sun and reindeers could be interesting. So to northern Norway I went on a trip this summer. The trip started with a flight from Stockholm to Tromso in northern Norway. At least that is what I thought. I came to Arlanda Airport in Stockholm and checked in on the flight in one ... read more

Hilsen fra Bodo. It's nighttime here again in the small Norwegian city above the Arctic Circle. And today was not an over-active day by any standards, but not my slowest day either. It started a little too early and I had a bit of trouble pulling myself out of bed at 7a.m. to get to my one and only class today, Norwegian language, at 8:15a.m. And after putting in my eyes (aka my contacts), I popped open my computer only to find that the internet was down. Sad day...so I took my time getting ready and played some tunes then headed down to campus with my Missouri roommie. It was actually a very nice walk and one that I'm really starting to enjoy. Of course, it sucks on rainy days as the rain here is INSANE! ... read more

What's one way to get a homesick, grumpy, fish-loving Alaskan to lighten up and smile a bit? Bring on the fish!! Over the past week, the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture have invited all of the International Exchange students studying Bioscience (aka me, Brad, and Libby) to join the Masters students on two excursions and then ALL of the international students from 29 different countries were invited on a cod fishing excursion with the Student Chaplain. It was nice to finally get out of my room and out to the seaside for a little Norwegian fishing introduction. On the first excursion last Wednesday, Brad and I joined the Masters students and headed to the Kjerringoy Gamle Handelssted aka the old merchant's centre on Kjerringoy. We got told last week at orientation that Kjerringoy is actually translated ... read more

Hello from Norway. Although my homesickness has been a million times more severe this time than any other time I've wandered off on my own, life in Norway is starting to have certain appealing aspects. In fact, I woke up the other day feeling kinda skippy as I went out on a bus ride. Yesterday was my first Norwegian language class and it was nice to be back in a classroom, taking some notes with the other international students, and meeting my new professor, Kit. It didn't last long as we were out of class in about 20 minutes. So instead of coming back to my room, we went to the bookstore and bought the book for the class so we could do the homework for the next class period. And in the bookstore, a familiar ... read more

Rain rain, go away, come again another day? I'm sure that is what most Norwegians are singing this weekend in Norway. It has been raining quite a bit which is kind of nice, but very wet! Of course, the rain is not the only thing that brought us back from the Lofoten Islands early. We set off Thursday morning around 8 a.m., caught the bus downtown, then walked to the ferry terminal to catch our boat out to the Lofoten Islands. Of course, given the early morning rising and my inability to get to bed before 2 a.m. yet, I was kind of grumpy and a little homesick still and stayed pretty quiet during our walk. The ferry ride was really nice, but one of the most bumpy spots ever. So while our boat was rocking ... read more

Hilsen fra Bodo! Well it has been about five days since I've been in this new little city. aYesterday was my birthday -- my 22nd actually and it started with getting my new student I.D. from Hogskolen i Bodo. Then it was off to explore the downtown area. The downtown expedition began with a walk inside the Glass Husset -- aka the Glass House (mall) where we were surprised to see a Burger King and the fact that Norwegians can smoke inside. After finding SpargeBank, we went to cash our checks and learned the ins and outs of cashing foreign checks in a country where the primary language is not English. It took a little bit of guess work, but we got it down. Then after lunch, it was just by chance that we stumbled upon ... read more

Dear Alaska, This is my first official blog entry from Norway, about Norway. I left you about 53 hours and it has been quite an up and down experience so far. I would be lying if I didn't first admit to you that I miss you. I have never missed you this much. It's true that I have often gone off for months before and left you behind, packed my car and waved goodbye, knowing that it would be awhile before we met again. But for some reason - this time was different. Could it be because the country in which I am now in goes by the metric system, has different currency, has food names that I do not quite understand, has limited street signs making it easy to get lost (yes, I have gotten ... read more

An apology is in order. The Danes aren't alone in Scandinavia in their capacity to charge. The rest of Scandinavia is right there with them, although we have concluded that Sweden offered a little more for our money than the others have so far. The prices are not really unexpected but they do make you blanch a little. And what is the Australian GST? A pissy little 10% was it? Try whacking 25% on everything you buy, or at least everything that we seem to have bought to date. We decided to make this run up and around Scandinavia because we had a month between one Frankfurt visit and the next. We realised that this would not be enough time but thought that we could have a taste that might whet our appetites for a future, ... read more

Emily and I just returned from a great trip the farthest north I will most likely ever go. We went waaay up north, 1500 miles from the northpole, 750km drive from my house to the town of Tromsø, Norway. We took a highway right on the Sweden-Finnish border all the way up past the point where Finland, Sweden and Norway all border each other. Once we hit Norway the scenery got much better. We saw a moose! and drove along fjords to one of the northern most cities in europe. We spent two nights in Tromsø. It was a quaint little town and twilight lasted until 11pm. Only a month left until they get the midnight sun. The streets were really confusing in Tromso. There wasn't much planning involved. A lot of streets were dead ends, ... read more
