Geo: 45.9877, 9.26198Left the Gasthaus in Munchen bright and bushy tailed just after eight. The wonderful innkeepers presented Bird with two quite cute and large cookies from Oktoberfest (the innkeeper went the night before, and sheepishly admitted he enjoyed himself). She plans on making the trip back to the U.S. with them for M1 and M2 (we'll see if they last). After trading cars we traveled through Garmisch to Austria and finally Italy to Lake Como. The trip was to last six hours and ended up a bit over seven, mostly due to the navigator (Bird). There were also a couple of stops for pictures. Some of the topography and roads in Austria and Switzerland are amazing. After driving it our memory returned of seeing it before, but nonetheless remains amazing. Tunnels back to back with each ... read more

So we came to the end of our stay in the Aosta Valley, we paid our bill and said a fond farewell to our great hosts and it was time to head back to Milan for our return flight in 2 days. We booked a hotel outside of Milan, near the Expo, handy for the airport. We didn’t intend to go into Milan. We had been there 30 years ago and it still looked the same – probably looked the same 500 years ago too. Not really interested in fashion and we had already eaten our fill of good Italian food. There is a really big antique and vintage market on the last Sunday of the month, along the canal in Milan. Would have liked that. Unfortunately, it was the day after we left. Maybe next ... read more

DAY 1 - Thursday Our lives have been so insanely busy for the last few weeks, we worked up until the last minute, finishing up right before we walked out the door. As usual, it's very hard to say goodbye to our baby kitties, knowing how sad they are when we leave. The airport was smooth and fast, security has lessened a lot for now. We flew to New York and had to change planes. The 8 hour flight to Milan was one of the most uncomfortable, awful flights we've taken. Marleah has really bad knees and was in misery, the food was horrible, we had only gotten 2 hours of sleep the night before and it's so hard to sleep on the plane. We managed to make it through fueled by our excitement for Italy ... read more

Our last full day here; it's an early start tomorrow as we go on our 3 train journeys to get to Prato. We took the funicular nice and early (9ish am - not crowded) to get to the town of Brunate. After a morning coffee and croissant, we walked up to the lookout via wooded and off the beaten track paths. The view was well worth it as it was a gloriously sunny mornng and we also climbed the lookout (another 143steps). After a quick dash back to the hotel we decided to take the fast boat to Menaggio. As it is now Septenber 4 (the tourist hoards have magically thinned) and because the town is really not as popular as Bellaggio across the water, it was very peaceful and pleasant. We followed up a tip ... read more

Having arrived in Milano on Monday afternoon, we were driven through a very clean and ordered city in efficient fashion along impressively wide and modern roadways to our "home" for the next five nights in Como. (The Milan Expo is on till the end of October; maybe they have spruced up the exit road from the airport? Anyhow, it was lovely, (not the usual industrial wastelands you see). The countryside looked very green with forests and crops (lots of corn fields). The city was having a public holiday so it was ghost like. A very, very clean place. Coming from what we experienced in Palermo (which was quite frankly, filthy) the contrast is stark. The lake from our balcony is pretty but cannot match the sights we have been seeing on the Amalfi Coast. On Tuesday we had ... read more

Geo: 46.0252, 9.05328The ride from Cortina to Lake Lugano was eight hours of bumper-to-bumper, stop-and-go, for most of the trip down to Milano. Throw in some high temps and even higher humidity - plus Europeans ending their August summer holiday - and you have the “perfect storm” for a miserable ride. If it wasn't for some lane splitting and following other bikes along the shoulder we might still be on the road. We finally arrived in San Mamete, Italy to discover that our accommodations felt like a wonderful, small “villa” overlooking Lake Lugano. After a totally exhausting travel day, we took the next day for kicking back, lounging around our wonderful grapevine-covered terrace, and catching up on our reading. Long naps were also the order of the day. On Monday, we headed about 20 minutes east ... read more

Straight from lunch with my Slovak family in Bratislava we had to get on the road and head for our last B & B of the trip in Bergamo! For any reading this that may not know, Bergamo is the city in northern Italy (about an hour east of Milan) where I lived for my junior year in high school. When we originally plotted our course and I saw that one of google’s suggested routes went right by Bergamo, I was extremely excited. We made it our weekend activity to stay two nights in Bergamo, and again Hailey was the idea travel partner, enduring (and even claiming to enjoy) a day spent revisiting my host families and hanging out with my host siblings and old friends. We got into Bergamo late on Thursday night and found ... read more

Easy day today in between two day tours. Not really wanting to do the Duomo church, Michelle talks me around. Each church has been magnificent in their own way and the Duomo did hold a few surprises. It seemed less of a church and more for the tourists as this has been the first church allowing photos inside. It also has its own App which I find amusing. Upon entering there is no denying these structures are amazing, with the marble columns, lead lighting, statues and high ceilings all from another time. We lit a candle for mum, as we have done in all the churches, as we think of her everyday. Downstairs there is a room with above ground crypts, blocked off for viewing only. In 1961 they also did an archaeologist dig underneath and ... read more

Off to Lake Como today for a day tour. Caught the tube down to the meeting point. Leaving at 8.45 it was about a 90 minute ride to the first sight of the lake. The size of the lake is 146 square kms, and is surrounded by Swiss alps. The Italians tell us proudly that none of the lake crosses the Swiss border so it is all theirs. After a short tour around the town of Como, we board our boat for a two hour cruise around. The history of some of the villas are highlighted to us and we see where George Clooney's villa is. We also see one of the most photographs villa on a point and find out some of "Casino Royale" was filmed there. (Villa del Balbianello) Landing at the town of ... read more

New place so we start out on foot with map as usual. We weave our way down the streets to the visitor centre as that is our meeting point for day tours later in the week. Walking around the Stoza Castle at one end of town, we follow the crowd down to the church and museum. The Duomo de Milano church is another magnificent gothic Italian designed structure and follows the theme from the previous countries where it is a main tourist hub. The building itself has a lot of scaffolding and repairs to it, as it is deteriorating over time. Not that keen to stand in line for tickets, we leave it for later in the week. Having know pre conceived ideas about these places brings us many surprises. Knowing Milan is the shopping capital, ... read more
