Our last day in Montalcino was fantastic. We started the day visiting Abbey St‘ Antimo. Founded by Benedictine Monks. Another beautiful example of architecture with Roman influence. Constantine had something to do with its founding back in 1350. The afternoon was spent touring two wineries: Podere Le Ripi . The winemaker, Giovanni, personally took us on a tour and explained their organic system thoroughly. We were lucky they started picking grapes that day. Very old school in the processes and all hand picked. We sampled their Brunello , Rosa and Bosai wines. Next we toured Masteo Janni Winery. Owned by the family that owns illy and a much bigger producer of wine. They were set up to produce and sell a lot of wine using the newest steel tanks-over a million bottles of wine per year. ... read more

Day 5 : Tuesday 10 September 2019 : Rome and the Vatican Up early to hit St Peters Basilica (€32). We were there by 8.30am and there was still a queue, but it moved quickly. The whole square is huge. Visited the Dome and walked to the top…wow what a walk, part of it is only one person wide and is on a lean, very claustrophobic and Hot! Amazing church and lovely view from the top. Onto the Vatican (€94) which was a mission to find as its not in the square. We had prebooked self guided audio tours, so walked straight through. Stunning and so much effort and money spent on it, but the rooms become much the same but interesting stories to go with them. At around 2pm we are all starving and tired ... read more

Wow everyone awake & on full speed ahead this morning. There is alot of urgency in the movements outside. We have a good people watching window from 4 floors up. People having a very animated chat on the corner (we could hear them from here over the traffic), someone on an errand can't find a park so parks on the pedestrian cossing, the little dog wants to play with the big dog across the street, little street cafes already filling up with lots of chat, elderly lady with her trolly bag (i could use one of those!), children waiting impatiently at the bus stop, music thumping from a car expecting the driver to be blown from the vehicle, 'ding ding' the tram is approaching, more people in animated chat, the scooters, the buses, every second person ... read more

Day 4 : Monday 9 September 2019 : Rome Attractions and Borghese Gardens First thing we headed to the Trevi fountain. No crowds, but it was turned off so it could be cleaned and also in shadow ☹ but still good ?. Onto the Spanish Steps and more beautiful little Piazzas. Pastries for morning tea (€6). Up we go to the Borghese Gallery and Gardens. We got lost in the expansive gardens, and found a pond, fountain, harp player but the gallery is closed on Mondays ☹ (Let me say it was on the very far corner from where we started!) Starving – need more pizza!. Hard to find our way out, but ended up down at the Santa Maria Bassilica and the Piazza de Spagna which was huge. Took the opportunity to go through the ... read more

A little slow off the mark this morning...but so was the rest of Rome. It is so warm here we have a developed a constant shine...no wonder they have lovely skin. Some pretty looking storm clouds but no storm arrived. Out at 9am & the streets are quiet. Using the new Metro is so easy. It does not appear to have affected the other modes of transport as the buses & trams are still constant & full. We enjoy people watching on the Metro, you name the nationality they are there. We changed route at san Giovanni onto the red line to Spagna. Quite a crowd at the 'Spagna Steps' already & so I didn't climb them this time. So we HAD to walk past all those amazing shops on the 'expensive street' with all the ... read more

Day 3 : Sunday 8 September 2019 : Rome and the Appian Way We got up and walked the cutest back streets across to Venezia to take Bus 118 (easy to catch once you work out how to validate your ticket, on the bus!) to the Appian Way, the ancient road that the Romans used to move their troops and visited the catacombs of San Callisto (€8pp).The Catacombs don’t have any bones left in them, but they are a little creepy. The holes of the kids/babies was the worst. Interesting though. Extremely long walk home. Was heading to the Giardini degli Aranci,(Orange Gardens) but got distracted and walked back via the Colosseum and Palantine Hill, so imposing. So many people late in the day, and still hot, so decided to get some photos of the Colosseum ... read more

Saturday & everything as usual like the rest of the week. Workers here tending the tourist industry heading off to work. We really enjoy staying a little out of the main hub. Our apartment is super nice & set up with everything we need. Very quiet until we open the windows & we get a blast of Italy into our dining room. It is quite entertaining...lots of family stuff. The bells ring at 8am & then the noise begins. We are still completely out of kilter...up at 5 this morning breakfasted & out by 8 into Roma Centrale on the new Metro C line to San Giovanni & changeover to A line onto the Repubblica stop. The city was still reasonably quiet for Roma, another 2 hours & it was a different story. The stroll down ... read more

Day 2 : Saturday 7 September : Rome and the Colosseum Off on our first real adventure. Graham’s leading the way. First stop (one of many, as it appears all roads lead to) Piazza Navona. Onto the Pantheon (free), a former Rome temple built in 125AD. The place is alive with so many people. Its magnificent inside and has a hole in its roof (intentionally). Onto Piazza Venezia and the monument (free) (Alter of the Fatherland). This is huge and you get a good view of some of the archaeological sites that are around, including the Colosseum, Teatro Marcello and Trajan’s Market. Walked over to Trajan’s Market to have a better look and then wandered on to find Mercato Monti, so wasn’t worth it, but an interesting part of town with the BEST pizza ever €13…so ... read more

Today was Sharon’s birthday so we are meeting up with Leonie and John (our villa companions) for pre-dinner drinks at our apartment, prior to us all going out to dinner. This morning we went to the Spanish Steps early, to see this landmark. From there we walked to the Trevi Fountain, to The Pantheon and Piazza Navona, where we had a birthday brunch for Sharon. This consisted of a triple gelato (for Sharon), coffee and tea. After this, we walked to Campo dei Fiori, where we had a look at all the market stalls and were enticed into a café to sample a 6 EUR special consisting of a Spritz and bruschetta (olive and artichoke). We did some food shopping for our pre-dinner drinks antipasto plate and then walked back to the Tiber, crossing at the ... read more

A great sleep in a Hotel 2 blocks over from Termini Stazione so then we were able to shoot out & grab some city transport tickets & some train tickets we will need while in Sicily. Also easy for us to catch the tram out to Mirti where we now stop for 4 nights. Met our lovely host Joseph who lives right next door & then we shot out to the Simply supermarket arriving back armed with the Italian essentials: mozarella, tortillas, tomatoes, capsicum, lettuce, salami, lasagna, fresh beans, grapes & of course some bottled grapes... We are on the top floor & the bed has a memory mattress....i've got a thing about beds at the moment.. The weather is warm enough to constantly seek the shade. Of course NZ has verandas outside all shopping areas ... read more
