This was my first trip into Europe, apart from England, and my first experience of travelling alone in a country where English is not spoken. It did make me feel a little intimidated and I made sure to eat and drink in tourist areas where I felt more comfortable expecting everyone to understand me without me making any effort at all to speak Italian. The thing that is always at the forefront of my mind is the Lonely Planet doco that Rob and I watched where the woman was speaking to people who did not know a word of English in their native countries and instead of making the effort to stumble her way through mispronounciations of their language she spoke English louder and slower like that was suddenly going to make them understand. And I ... read more

Rome takes a minimum of three to four days just to see the basics. I'd been there twice before, and can say that the Forum, the Coliseum, and the Vatican each take a day, and it would be a challenge to squeeze in other attractions like the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, and other sights worth seeing in that amount of time.... read more

Roaming Rome... We stayed at an acquiantance's house who gladly became our tour guide. We went to Vatican, into St. Peter's Basilica, to Sistine Chapel and walked up to Michael Angelo's castle. There were a lot of tourists in Vatican who wanted to see the Pope but very few Romans...do we still call them Romans? We went inside the St. Peter's Basilica, went to a basement to see St Peter's and other Popes' tombs. I took a picture of the famous Pieta by Michaelangelo. I could not explain my feelings seeing these things. I didn't visualized myself before looking at these artworks. Especially when we went to the Sistine Chapel. I was awed at the Sistine Chapel. I have read and heard about the ceiling and was teary eyed when i saw it, the people ... read more

This time I visited the Colosseum, which was worth it since I arrived early and it wasn't too too touristy in May. But in July and August? No way. Though it would be difficult not to 'when in Rome.' Besides, there are dilapidated ruins throughout the city that could be more interesting to visit than some of the main sites, since you'd have them all to yourself. The forum and chariot track always requires some imagination, which isn't too difficult considering the history there.... read more

Leaving Tuscany we ventured to Roma with Aaron to see the Vatican, Coliseum and all the sights this city has to offer. After Roma, we traveled to the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, Capri, Amlfi, Pompei and our favorite hill town, Ravello. We spent Thanksgiving with Aaron on the waterfront in Amalfi eating Pizza and - a wonderful experience! The bus ride from Sorrento to Amalfi is all it is said to be and left Bill dizzy. Mary and Aaron were fine and road the bus back to Sorrento. Bill took the hydro foil and was so very glad he did! We loved this part of the trip. Sadly, after a week we had to say good bye to Sorrento. Once back in Roma, we said good bye to Aaron, as he headed back to Senegal.... read more

My 5 day trip to Rome was certainly one of the highlights of my life. Here are some things that I will never forget. Re-enacting a gladiator fighter in the Roman Coliseum. Spending an afternoon relaxing in the Roman forum similar to how Romans did 2,000 years ago, eating authentic italian food, and seeing the sistine chapel. Here are a couple of recommendations that you may want to consider if you go to Rome. First, eat italian gelati 3 times a day and worry not about calories! Second, if you wait around the forum you may find a guy giving a free English speaking tour . . . I took it and it was way worth while . . . it took about an hour and a half and it really brought the forum to life! ... read more
