Rome takes a minimum of three to four days just to see the basics. I'd been there twice before, and can say that the Forum, the Coliseum, and the Vatican each take a day, and it would be a challenge to squeeze in other attractions like the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, and other sights worth seeing in that amount of time.
