Day 36 August 6, 1997 Chi f ail tuo arredamento. Carino! Young boys over the world have this same dream. The situation starts with the actor (the young boy) virtually floating around a cerebral dreamscape. He is surrounded by leggy blondes. A brunette turns, looks at him, licks her lips and passes off this ‘come hither’ look. Suddenly, a red haired goddess slowly slinks across the room, the top button of her white blouse is open...how convenient. She bends over, tops up his jug of scotch and sexily whispers something in his ear. He looks up. All the girls...the blonde, the brunette, the Asian, the one that looks like Pamela Anderson are all walking in synch from the kitchen towards his bed. The one in the middle is carrying a big bowl of Lucky Charms...the red ... read more

Day 34 August 4, 1997 Licentia Florence Gone. While gnawing on my crusty loaf, I looked and looked but could not find her. Like me, I knew she was leaving today. Did I sleep in? Did I wake too early? My pack was ready and lying in the courtyard. Yet, even after I filled up on crumbs, I did not leave. Instead, I mulled around, surveying the guests as they came and went. To no avail. She did not come. Quite unfortunate. Sure, I ran into the three amigo’s….Alex the Scot, Auzzie Adam and Eric the Half-bee. They were always around. Easy to spot. But, I didn’t find her. Drat. Leaving Florence, my pack carried no new trinkets, no new t-shirts, nothing other than a hefty credit card receipt and the memory of a really fantastic ... read more

May 1993 U.K. & Europe After leaving glorious Switzerland we headed for Italy & Rome. Italy certainly was different to Switzerland. Italy felt far more historical for me. I was disappointed we couldn't go to Pisa but fortunately we saw so much else. There were moments of nostalgia, with memories of looking at my parents and god-parents photographs and slides when I was still a child, dreaming of the day that I would see the same places and here I was looking at so many of the same landmarks! Fountain of Trevi - the largest Baroque fountain in Rome is so beautiful, but I don't know if I should believe in it's traditional legend. Apparently if visitors throw a coin into the fountain you will return to Rome - we threw a coin in and haven't ... read more

During the last night in Florence, it poured with rain. This made things a bit cramped, as we all had to move away from the outside edges of the covered areas to avoid getting wet. All the washing that I had hung out to dry was now soaking, but I had to just stuff it in a bag with no idea how and when I was going to be able to get it all dry now. I dismissed any ideas of hanging it out of a train window. I got up early and headed for Rome. This time, when I arrived, I was not in desperate need of a shower as I’d had one at the campsite before I left. Albeit an extremely cold one. I set straight off for the Vatican, which I had missed ... read more

I don't know why the Italians bother with time tables, as they have absolutely no intention of following them. The train to Rome left late and arrived having lost even more time on the way. I arrived in Rome after getting a longer night’s sleep than I had suspected, but after several days travelling, I could kill for a shower. I decided to check out the facilities at the station and there were some showers, but it would cost me £3.50. As I was used to spending little more than that for a full night’s accommodation, I decided to go in search of a room. Absolutely no chance - everywhere was full to overflowing long before I arrived. Seriously running out of motivation, I decided to go and do the tourist bit anyway. After a fairly ... read more

One exception to the norm of taking long weekend trips to Switzerland and the French Riviera from Stuttgart was the trip to Rome. My Mom flew to Rome from Thailand, and her psychiatrist friend Mary, who had previously traveled to France and Switzerland with us in 1978, flew into Rome from the States. Friday after work, we took the normal transportation for a weekend trip to a distant destination, the overnight train with reservations for two couchettes. The train departed Boblingen about 6:30 pm and went directly to Rome...quite convenient. We shared the six-bed couchette compartment with two older German couples. They were on their way to Ischia off the coast of Naples. Normally one sleeps in their clothes in the couchette compartment as you are usually sharing it with strangers. However, our new German friends ... read more
