Chapter 2 Get off my boyfriend’s gonads you Roman bastard! It is hard to believe for those who know them, but after a restless night for Martin (a lack of pillows, he needs at least two puffed-up pillows to get a decent sleep), and a great sleep for Maya (Valium induced), they arose at 9.00am for breakfast. A hearty Italian affair with the best cups of coffee, a perfect start! Though judging by the other residents, it seems travelling out of season entails having to share hotels with geriatrics and children. So what was the plan? Head for Santa Maria Maggiore// Roman Forum/ Palatine Hill/Capitoline Hill and see how we get on? Didn’t seem too ambitious, so off they trundled out of the hotel, towards the station. Maya was still a little spaced out but was ... read more

Chapter 1 From the crooked spire to the eternal city Italy The alarm clock rings the changes, time to rise sleepy heads! It was a wet, miserable Derbyshire morning, as our travellers are awoken by the sound of an annoying cockerel squawking, indicating they should be waking up. The annoying part of this wake up call was not the fact that it was a cockerel as such, it was the fact that the blasted bird noises were digital and emanating from the little black box next to the bed. Furthermore it’s batteries were beginning to fail giving it the sound of a dying cockerel squawking its last triumphant cock-adoodle-doo. Chesterfield, a fairly small Derbyshire town, famous only for its crooked spire and the fact their football team once reached a semi-final of the FA Cup provided ... read more

These days are gold. Every morning we enjoy pizza and beer outside Antonio’s corner pizzeria. St Peter stands humbly in front with all the saints surrounding. Nuns climb up to the fountain and partake of the cool spring. We see The Polizia who love the ladies. We see triple parked smart cars and fantastic drivers; we see Michelangelo’s ceiling, Raphael’s Athens, Caesar’s Coliseum, The Corinthian Arches, and the feet of our Lord being kissed by pilgrims. We see the ancient city where adulteresses were buried alive and defeated Jews were paraded with their ark. Ancient buildings and waterfalls leap at us from every corner, old men play chess, single mothers beg and Moroccans sell Louis Vuitton bags. The subway gets us there in no less than ten minutes. Rome is grand. We wait patiently in line ... read more

Queria tanto comemorar o Halloween!

One of the more serious drawbacks to modern digital camera technology is that the memory sticks have been known “without notice” to crash or dump digital image data. This is what happened to us and this explains why the lack of pictures on this journal entry. We inexplicably lost all our travel images from Venice, Florence and much of Rome. We'll spend our morning touring the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel, and our early afternoon in St. Peter's amazing cathedral. Then it's straight to the heart of Rome, where we'll spend the afternoon uncovering Ancient Rome visiting the Pantheon, Forum and Colosseum. Afterwards we'll celebrate "la dolce vita," with a fountain-splashing, after-dinner stroll through the heart of the city.... read more

A photo essay on night time in Rome. A city of eternity, but unfortunately, we need to move on with our lives, as we are heading out of Italy tomorrow, and be back at the States in two weeks. Walking around the city for the last time, each of us saying our last word of goodbye to beautiful and intimate places we've experienced for the last three months.... read more

Beware, Rome is not a safe place for a non-observant person. Pickpocketers are smart, but one always has to outsmart them by paying attention all around him all the time, and HIDE YOUR WALLET somewhere other than a normal place that unregistered people couldn't reach for it! Today was a nice Sunday, and I decided to check out the famous Roman Flea Market suggested by my Italian book, at the Porta Portese. This flea market is the biggest in Rome, and only happening every Sundays. Porta Portese is located across the Tiber from via Marmorata in Testaccio. I was such in a good mood, hoping to find some goodies at the market. As a pack rat that wouldn't pass an opportunity to check out neat stuff (especially in Rome! Who knows what would you get?), I ... read more
