Geo: 40.626, 14.3744Today was a nonstop day of touring. We caught an early train to Naples. It's a two hour ride from Rome. We shared a train car with a couple from Philidelphia and two ladies from Rome. There was non stop conversation the whole way. They spoke some English and Josh spoke some Italian so we made it work. The ladies wanted to know everything about us, where we've been and where else we were going. There was a lot of laughter through it all. Those two hours flew by.Arriving in Naples we picked up some maps and bought bus tickets to help us get around the city. It is a big old city that reminds me of Detroit. We visited Piazza Dante. Like most piazzas it had a statue, a church and shops around ... read more

Italian Adventure Anna and I organised our delicious breakie of yoghurt, muslie and slice banana ready to have on the bus as it was an early 7:30 start. We weren't the earliest so were left to be the back seat bandits with Dan from Adelaide and then Terry and Alan the only mature age couple joined us up the back. Anna and I cracked out tubs, started munching only to discover that our new guide, Ereni's first rule was "no eating on the bus". Whoops! Haha Big chats and we discovered the 'oldies' were really super cool to hang out with and not afraid of being overun by a busload of about 30 twenty somethings. At our first service stop Terry and Alan met Teagan who decided as they were the 'olds' then we should fully ... read more

Monday 28th May, 2012 – Sorrento, Italy Weather this morning was grey and overcast – not cold though. When we woke, there was a huge cruise liner anchored in the harbour. There was also a large 5-masted clipper sailing ship at anchor. We decided to do a “hop-on, hop-off” bus tour of the town and nearby surrounding areas. So we caught the open-top double-decker bus. About 10 mins into the journey, we felt a few spots of rain so quickly moved downstairs under cover – good thing too – it got very wet! A lot of people were left upstairs as downstairs was full – they were sodden by the end of the round trip. We didn’t “hop-off” at all – was too wet to go walking. The country side was amazing – even though there ... read more

Sunday, 27th May, 2012 – Sorrento, Italy We have decided to stay in Sorrento for another night (tomorrow) and will be leaving on Tuesday – still haven’t decided our destination…. We’ll work that out in the morning. The extra day was to see a few more things in this great part of the world. Today we visited Pompeii, and Herculeum – both towns being victims of the earthquake and eruption of Vesuvius. In total, we walked for about 6 hours, caught trains there and back which took a good hour each way, so again, we’re exhausted – but thoroughly enjoying it. We both thought Herculeum was better than Pompeii – less people, better preserved buildings and artefacts. It was hard to comprehend that after reading about these towns for so many years, that we were actually ... read more

Saturday, 26th May, 2012 Success – we made it from Rome to Sorrento with no pre-booking of trains or accommodation!! At the time of writing this, seems like a good time to leave Rome – it’s 8:45 pm on Saturday evening and in Rome it’s 18C and thunderstorms! Here it is pleasant but overcast – probably rain tomorrow when we strolling around. A description from a web site Sorrento, wedged on a ledge between the mountains and the Mediterranean, is an attractive resort of 20,000 residents and — in the summer — as many tourists. It's as well-located for regional sightseeing as it is a pleasant place to stay and stroll. The Sorrentines have gone out of their way to create a completely safe and relaxed place for tourists to spend money. Everyone seems to speak ... read more

Day 1 We caught the train to Naples from Rome and then down to Sorrento. Our hotel was up on a hillside about 25mins up from the hotel... Would have been nice if the sign for the hotel was before our bus stop but it wasn't! We got off at the next stop and ventured down the treacherous, windy road dodging the cars as they came hooning round the bend!! Our room was nice but the view was amazing! Right over the Sorrento bay! Incredible! We missed the bus back down to Sorrento so they said you could walk, an easy 30 minute walk..... Well blinkin heck if that was an easy walk I would hate to see a hard one! It was down a steep, slippery, windy "street". But it was beautiful and I am ... read more

Happy Easter!!! Buona Pasqua :) I'm currently in Catania, Sicily writing this blog. We came here for Easter break from Friday- Monday but that will be a later blog (at some point). Last week, we (Me, Carrie and Abby) went with about 40-ish other students from Umbra to Pompeii, Sorrento, Capri and Naples. Sounds familiar, don't you think? The trip the week before that included these same places, but not Capri and Naples. We got on the bus at the ridiculous hour of 6:30am. I'm getting used to these. Wait to hear what we had to do for this trip.. We drove in a big bus down to Pompeii and were split into 2 groups and given a tour of a the city...AGAIN. Yawn. The tour wasn't even that great. And it's not like I've seen ... read more

*Better pictures to come* This is going to be a quick post before bed. I’m hoping my mom will log into Skype while I’m writing this up. I haven’t been able to actually talk to her since I’ve been in Europe, just emails. This weekend trip has been amazing, except being sick and forgetting my camera. I made friends with one of the girls from California, northern to be more specific. Her name is Rebecca and we have spent almost all our free time together. I got lucky and she has a really nice camera and is willing to share her pics. Of those a few include me in from of a palm tree just for my mom. After taking my very first train on Thursday we boarded a private bus from Naples to Sorrento. I ... read more

Well we have not been doing anything exciting to blog about in Sorrento. We have been enjoying a slow relaxing few days as we are close to the end of our trip, sadly. Rome will be a busy last few days, so we have been taking it easy and aside from the day in Positano, haven't ventured out of Sorrento. The location of our accomodation has been fabulous and a nice walk up to town in the shade. Today we head to Capri and are very excited to be heading there for two nights. Our last trip we had only a day trip to the island and loved it. We caught a taxi from the hotel to the marina to catch the ferry to Capri - and the taxi driver was a scream. He was telling ... read more
