*Better pictures to come*
This is going to be a quick post before bed. I’m hoping my mom will log into Skype while I’m writing this up. I haven’t been able to actually talk to her since I’ve been in Europe, just emails. This weekend trip has been amazing, except being sick and forgetting my camera. I made friends with one of the girls from California, northern to be more specific. Her name is Rebecca and we have spent almost all our free time together. I got lucky and she has a really nice camera and is willing to share her pics. Of those a few include me in from of a palm tree just for my mom.
After taking my very first train on Thursday we boarded a private bus from Naples to Sorrento. I found out I got my own hotel room, +) Friday we meet early and headed for Capri, upon arrival we had a private boat tour around the island. It is so beautiful! The act of circling an island in a boat reminded me of touring around Protection Island in Sequim with my family. Although the only animals I spotted here were seagulls. We
got to see the green and white grottos from the ships which were pretty and then we got to visit the famous Blue Grotto if we wanted. It cost money. I opted to spend the money and go into the famed grotto. It was breath taking, well worth the money. Some of the group “fell” into the water but our guide wasn’t as willing to allow for such accidents.
After the Blue Grotto we headed up to the hilltop town of Anacapri, which just means above Capri. We got some great views and had lunch before heading back down to Capri and catching the boat back to Sorrento. With some free time upon our return Rebecca and I went wondering up and down small shop covered streets and met some very nice shop keepers. Then we headed to dinner down by the water, which is a walk because the city is on the top of a hill. We got down to the recommended restaurant only to find it closed! After making the long walk back up we found a place for dinner and that wiped us out for the evening.
Today was a free day so Rebecca and
I caught a bus to Almalfi, unsure what all the hype is about for this town. It was okay, but not really worth the hour and a half bus ride one way on a scary small road that induces motion sickness. One upside to this side trip was the beach had handfuls of sea glass! I got a film canister for my mom and was even lucky enough to find a shell for her. After lunch, sitting on the beach, and browsing through shops we came back to Sorrento. Here we went in search of the gardens, which were really just a few palm trees and cacti, but had a great view of Vesuvius, which we will be climbing tomorrow! We found a couple more fun shops where the craftsmanship has been passed down many generations. One of the shops was cameos. The shop keeper showed us how they were made and how to decipher quality. The work in this shop was awesome. There was one particular piece I fell in love with. Only 2,200 Euro…. Yeah, so amazing…. Rebecca got a pic so that will get posted. It was a white gold setting with diamonds; it wasn’t even the setting that drew me to it, but the detail of the actual cameo. The setting of course didn’t hurt. Next we found a great place for dinner, the best dinner I’ve had in Italy yet. A simple ravioli, but it was delicious!
I’m now back in my hotel room. It is another early start tomorrow, we will check out then head to Pompeii and Vesuvius before going to Naples to catch the train back to Florence and classes tomorrow. I hope to be able to do more weekend adventure around Italy during the quarter. It has been a great experience, and I’ve really enjoyed getting to know another couple of towns. I hope to get to Venice, Rome, and the Milan region. Although there are so many other fantastic places as well.
I hope everyone is well at home! Time for me to get some rest.
