We knew we had to make kilometres to get to the next destination. We made sure we had fuel for that is not everywhere available. To fuel the car is also a story. There are two fuel prices that have a difference of 20 euro cents. On arriving at a station you have to be quick otherwise they have the nozzle in their hands and fuel your car. When you quick enough you are there before them and fuel your own car will make it 20 euro cents per litre cheaper. You learn quickly I can tell you. We reached Cosenza in the afternoon but had to find a place to sleep. Not very hard. We found one and was not expensive even included parking. Very important in Italy. now for a place to eat, there ... read more

My first help-exchange and the first time I've been to Italy. I flew out from Stansted, arriving at Lamezia airport to meet Keith, my host and Hannah another helper. Any worries I had were unjustified - he was not a murderer, weirdo or sex-pest. Just a normal down-to-earth guy. We had about a 40min drive through stunning scenery to his house, located just outside the village of Rogliano. What a place - see photo above but I can't do it justice. Surrounded by rolling hills and a smattering of sleepy looking villages, it's like stepping back in time. Well, until you see the traffic. What a nightmare! Maria, Keiths wife, was waiting for us when we arrived. She showed us to our rooms. Hannah was inside and I had a little log-cabin-esque extension outside - bonus! ... read more

I left Rogliano station around 11am with fellow helpex'r Hannah. Our train was a single carrige and looked resplendent as fook covered front to rear in graffitt - see photo above. The Italians seem to love graffitti, it's everywhere. Not your average UK attempt, oh no. If an Italian writes on a wall it's to declare his undying love: "Princepessa ti amo!!" We arrived in Cosenza around midday - bad idea. The traffic was not what I had expected. Streets were rammed, horns were blaring, the whole Italian-shebang. Shops close at 1pm for siesta so food was needed before we walked any further. I don't do walking on an empty stomach....After a quick bite we walked through the newer part of town for about an hour, marvelling at the mad Italian parking: parallel parking on a ... read more

So either I am the most clumsy person on earth or death is stalking me... Or something. Yesterday I managed to stand up whilst crouched under an open window and gave myself a mild concussion and a very attractive lump. On Sunday I fell asleep on the lilo in the pool and woke up with a bright red cleavage and tummy, which is very very sore now (and also goes to prove that your skin really does build up sun resistance as my face and arms were in the sun just as much as my body, but because they're used to the sun they're now brown as apposed to my never exposed midrif and boobs, which are now red). And furthermore, I have either a cold or my first experience of hayfever. Most likely a cold. ... read more

Soooo I'm thinking it may have been not the wisest idea to go away again so very soon after being away for so very long. Whilst here is amazing, I kinda just wanna be back home... Lame I know, but I can't help it, I had a tantalising brief moment of home and then went again... I have been rather enjoying the Italian male idea of fashion. The all dress in a way that, were we in England, they would be rampant homosexuals. There are guys here who even shave their legs. All perfectly straight guys, I might add, the strict catholocism and small village setting make it somewhat of a no-no to be gay. Yet for some reason, they all dress like it. Why? Pass. Ideas on a postcard. I feel rather like Cindarella here. ... read more

So here I am, jetting off to yet another sunny country. Don't you just hate me? It's a hard life being a language student, but someone's got to do it! I'm staying with a family in the south of Italy. In return for free accomodation and meals I help them around the house and garden for 5 hours a day. Not bad eh? The family are lovely, really friendly and great sense of humour. The food is divine, well it's Italy, what do you expect? The house is amazing, the kind of home people dream of moving abroad to. It's massive and has an outdoor swimming pool and trampoline. The weather is fantastic, in the 30s. I've only been here two days and already my body's back to Paraguayan hot and cold levels, as it was ... read more

We left Lorica today earlier than expected but we just need to adjust to changes in our intinerary. Lorica is high in the mountains and very green but also secluded. Like I said no Internet access. I wanted to mention the food at the hotel. Lorica is known for their mushrooms. They have an annual mushroom festival. Our spaghetti is just a tomatoe sause and we've added mushrooms for a change. They are wonderful. We've driven up and down the mountain several times and now realize it is no big deal to drive in the country. Our intentions were to have a picnic by the lake today but it was thundering and raining so that ruined the plans. In spite of this weather...we still didnt need a jacket and had the ac on in the car. ... read more

The cars we ve rented are miniature. Today we fit into a car similar to a Madza 3 but it was a Fiat. Four adults with two pieces of luggage each. No pick up and go in this car. It was the only rental available. Depending on how we rent the car, the cost vary. We rented a car for 75 euros for 24 hours and only allowed us the distance of 200 kilometers. 75 euros equates to approx. 115 American dollars. Gas is only 1.50 per litre. I think it is 4.5 litres makes a gallon or something like that. The gas stations have full service so we never have to get out of the car to get gas. Late one night we stopped at McDonalds. I got a Filet o Fish, fries and a ... read more

May 17 , 2008 Amantea, Italy We drove down from Sorrento to southern Italy and spent one night in a small beach town called Amantea on the south west coast. This is a very nice part of the country and is getting better known for the beaches and great weather. We had a nice hotel on the beach a little ways from the main town and enjoyed the peace and quiet and a beautiful sunset over the ocean. This would not be a hard place to come back to for a week or so. The drive is easy on very good roads ( a bit of construction but well managed ). You would not believe the number ( and length ) of the tunnels built through the mountains. It really is amazing and it really straightens ... read more
