Drove North about an hour from Cork to see Cahir Castle which is from the year 1142. We then drove to the Rock of Cashel which is a fortress from the 4th century. We attempted to see a Castle Ormond from the 14th century. Although we did “see it”, I did not notice in the tour book that it was not open until June. We then drove into Waterford and checked into our hotel. We drove to two beach towns, Dunmore East and Tramore and had dinner at our hotel’s pub. ... read more

English Weve arrived in Ireland (and im not quite sure how the keyboards here work so excuse my punctuation), the towns are very pretty. Were traveling along the coast down to Cork where we;ll work in an organic farm for 2 months. Weve only been here three days, in Dublin we stayed in a youth hostel, the first cheap one weve found so far (8 dollars per person). Unfortunately weve found no other hostals in the same price range, last night the cheapest accomodation we could find was for 60$ in a bed and breakfast(there doesnt seem to be a lot of camping along our route). So far the price of living seems to be higher than in Spain and Portugal, well just have to get used to it. We had a great breakfast this morning ... read more

So, yes... a lot has happened since we last updated (as you might be able to tell from our title). Berlin first... It was good, we got an awesome (and free) walking tour of Berlin. Yay New Europe Tours! We had a hard time getting to our hostel, but eventually found it with the help of some locals. The train (public transit) system in Berlin originally seemed insane, but after a good nights rest we managed to get around fairly easy. Steven thinks it is actually one of the better designs in Europe. We visited a cool museum that had taken apart temples and city gates, like one of the city gates of Babylon, in foreign lands and reassembled them in the museum. Seeing the wall and the death strip in between was interesting. We found ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Cork » Kinsale May 13th 2008

Last night, our waitress suggested visiting these two towns which are just outside Cork. Kinsale is a fishing port. While Cobh is a fishing port too, it is more famous for being the final point of departure for the fateful voyages of the Titanic and Lusitania. We drove back into City Cork and spend the afternoon shopping for short sleeve shirts for me (all I packed was sweaters and it has been in the 70s). We found a Captain America’s Pub (John’s favorite comic book character) and shared a pizza for dinner. ... read more

What can I say. There are thouse of you, I am sure, that have had a calling to Australia, America or even Cavan... What ever the calling has been, mine has alway been Canada. Don't know why... maybe its the attractive Deer ver there or maybe the vastness of the country. Where you could ask the other half to walk over that hill, over there and never see them again. I just cant put my finger on it ;-) But my dream has come through. I am going to Canada. Not for a week, not two weeks, but four. (If your gona do it... do it right). This is where we will give you a taste, an inside view on what its like to be a paddy (Indian paddy) going around a country a little bigger ... read more

We woke up early for a run/walk around Dingle before checking out of the B&B. We drove the “Ring of Kerry”, which is a popular loop around the County Kerry. We stopped at the seaside town of Waterville and ate lunch and John tried to teach me how to skip rocks in the Atlantic Ocean. Taking a road less traveled through a forest, we then drove onto City Cork, which is the second largest city in the Republic of Ireland. We found a great pub across the street from the hotel and had Shepherd’s Pie and Curry Chicken. Every menu seems to have Curry Chicken and Lasagna, which we found really odd for Ireland. ... read more

It’s our last day in Ireland and we’ve had simply perfect weather. It’s 25 today but it’s been in the low 20’s mostly and not a drop of rain. In fact we’ve only had a half day of drizzle during the whole trip. Must have been all the raincoats and umbrellas I packed.... read more

After a warm breakfast at our B&B, we started our drive West around the Slea Head. This is a scenic drive on roads that follow the coast of Dingle. We stopped a few times for great pictures and had some fun feeding the birds. We headed back into town and had chicken at a local pub. We did a little shopping and decided to head back out to the Slea Head. There is a popular postcard of the Dunquin Pier, which shows a winding stone dock and we were in search of this pier. We stopped at a restaurant, made entirely of stone, and had dessert. After finding the Dunquin Pier and taking lots of pictures, we drove back into Dingle and headed East. This was another “Sunday drive” as we took some side roads and ... read more

We met a very interesting Irish guy who told us about some untouristy places to visit and the history involved with them. This guy can talk for hours, but the stories he tells....turns out he used to be with the IRA and the Irish Gardia (police) and is now a bodyguard to people who could be under threat, diplomats, celebrities, drug lords etc. ,whenever they want to travel. He comes here to de-stress and catch up on his hobby of Irish Myths and Legends. He’s a fascinating guy and full of information (with perhaps a bit of blarney thrown in). He pointed us in the direction of an old priory where we could wander around on our own. And another small abbey with a Celtic Cross for a King that drowned in a nearby river that ... read more

Another beautiful day, no rain and mid-sixties with sunshine. We drove 1-1/2 hours to the small town of Dingle, via Connor’s Pass. There are two roads which lead to Dingle; the main road which can accommodate the buses full of tourists and Connor’s Pass. Connor’s Pass is full of winding turns and many places where the road narrows to one lane. Yesterday was a clear day, so the views were amazing. Along the way to Dingle, we found a sandy beach at Castlegregory. John had some fun with a dog who just loved to play fetch with rocks. We spend the afternoon walking around Dingle, enjoying a lunch of fish and chips and an ice cream sundae. We checked into our Bed and Breakfast and I took a nap as I am still fighting this head ... read more
