In order to get to the Ireland part of this blog I have to take everyone backwards a few days in order to fully appreciate the circumstances of our trip. I have had dysentary in Nepal, food poisoning in Costa Rica, a contaminated lassi in Thailand, and too much crappy wine in Morocco, all of which make one feel pretty awful. What could be safer than a trip to Ireland? Getting to Ireland meant a Christmas visit to New York where my mom and her husband had bravely volunteered to watch my two kids and my brother's daughter for the week while we went wandering. The first step was getting to New York. It started out with low expectations and downright dread, a red-eye flight with a three year old who, during her best moments, still ... read more

LANDED IN DUBLIN 13 OCT. After a very small amount of sleep on the flight from Chicago, we picked up our rental car at 10AM. So, now Mike is driving on the left side of the road, shifting manual tranny with his right hand, and we need to get out of the city. Well, we did it and arrived in Kilkenny very early in the afternoon. Only once did we have to turn around. Stayed at Ashbrook House, a beautiful B&B about 6 miles out of town. Our hosts graciously allowed us to check in early. Took a little walk down the lane. Needed to do what we could to stay awake until dark. Had a fine steak dinner at Paddy's just down the road from the B&B, then heavenly sleep until 8 the next morning. ... read more

Day 13: I keep on meaning to discuss the people on the tour. Most of the people are very friendly. We have one person on the tour that nobody can stand but that is it. I am not having too much trouble with the party reputation the tour company has. There are a few people who are happy to not party and return to the hotel at an early enough time (like myself). The tour guide warned us about the Contiki cough at the start of the tour and many people have fallen victim to the cough. Myself, I haven't got the cough but, I do have a bit of throat thing going on-nothing too serious, just a tinkle in the throat. The Internet wasn't free yesterday so I didn't use it. Today was free thankfully. ... read more

We’ve just visited four places – two stunningly scenic, two disturbingly urban. From Westport we drove out to Achill Island, Ireland’s largest offshore island (although not far offshore, as the bridge to it is only about 50 metres long). We drove along Atlantic Drive, another winding, undulating, potholed goat track, complete with wandering sheep, stones marking out the most dangerous of the drops off the side of the road and –amazingly – a lone jogger out in the middle of nowhere. Oh, and spectacular views of the Atlantic coast as well. Heading up toward Derry, through country that becomes less green and picturesque and more stony and rugged as you travel north, we stopped at Donegal for a look around, then Slieve League to see the highest sea cliffs in Europe. Slieve League is fantastic, although ... read more

This morning, i got up bright and early, enjoyed a free breakfast at my hostel, and caught a train from Dublin to Kilkenny! Why Kilkenny, you ask? I don't really know, to be honest. this "Ireland in one week" part of the guide book i have said to go to Kilkenny, and since i really only knew a few things i wanted to do, i figured i'd go to Kilkenny for s's & g's. Weeelll Kilkenny probably wouldn't be on my personal "week of Ireland" list, but I found a way to make it more than worth it : ) To be fair, Kilkenny is such a quaint, picturesque Irish town that I can't complain too much :P There's not much to see in the city proper in terms of landmarks or specific sites. There's Kilkenny ... read more

Kilkenny is a medieval town south of Dublin. There was supposed to be an interesting castle to explore…we had a lot of trouble finding it. There were a lot of churches, however, each one we thought was the castle! We basically wandered aimlessly around the town looking for this castle…we did finally find it…looks a bit like Buckingham Palace, but don’t tell the locals that. Had a terrific lunch at this small café…mushroom soup, irish brown bread, and a blueberry muffin with fresh cream. It started to rain so we left Kilkenny to find Ennis, the starting point of our first day of biking tomorrow. We chose to take the scenic route…took three hours! Geoff drove, Brian navigated, and I napped in the back seat and snapped an occasional photo. The sky became gloomy and it ... read more

Today was our last day of traveling the island. Kinda sad and kinda happy not to be in a car for 4-6 hours a day.... Mixed emotions, but we've seen a lot and have had a great trip, so I'm mostly happy. Today we left Limerick and traveled to the southeast of Ireland and visited Ireland's oldest city, Waterford, home of Waterford Crystal. :) Our GPS is not the most reliable and doesn't recognize the newer, major hwys so we've had a bit of trouble these past few days deciding whether to listen to the GPS lady or go with the signs. Just an FYI... follow the signs. :) We make it to the city centre of Waterford and go in the Waterford Crystal store. The next tour isn't for an hour or so and we ... read more

After our wonderful stay in Galway, our next stop was the town of Kilkenny to see my friends, Amy and Colm, who used to work at James Hobans back in DC.  We decided to take advantage of having a car to swing down south first to see the Cliffs of Moher, and then head over to Kilkenny.  We set out on yet another beautiful crystal clear day, and unlike the monotonous highway from Dublin to Galway this drive stretched over Irelands back roads.  I was so focused, and had so much fun driving our manual car on the twisting, winding roads that I barely had time to gaze at the gorgeous countryside flying by.  Mary was though, and taking amazing pictures along the way.  Castle after castle (Colm was ridiculing Americans how when they come into ... read more

Monday, October 11: We woke up fairly early for us—about 7:30! Repacked after three nights in the same place, loaded our car, and checked out of the Royal Marine Hotel. The Royal Marine is a grand old historic hotel in Dun Laoghaire and it was a wonderful place to stay. We learned that Queen Victoria, Laurel and Hardy, Frank Sinatra, as well as Michael Collins (hiding out with his mistress), have stayed there. It was a beautiful morning in Ireland and we walked down the East Pier to see Dublin Bay (the water, not our favorite pub back in Ames) and back—about two miles. The Pier is a busy place with walkers, joggers, bikers, fishermen, and mommies with strollers. We stopped back at the Harbor Bar for a shared lunch of fish and chips and then ... read more

4th August Day one of travelling around Ireland - what a great start - the boys went to pick up the car but on arrival found it was not up to scratch and had to hunt around for another car - we ended up with a great one which was almost new - they parked the car in a spot so we could load it up and get moving..... however, we didn't know that we had parked in a police car spot...... until Mr Plod strolled over to us but all went well... Took us ages to get out of Dublin and a few times going in circles but eventually we found the outskirts... hmm seems while doing the circles we missed a few decent looking shops... bugger! On our travels we stopped at a jail ... read more
