Finally had a breakfast that did not consist of crappy eggs, toast, and crappy coffee/tea. We headed to Kilmainham Geol. It was a jail dating back to the 1700s. Most importantly it was where 14 men, who helped organize the Easter Rising back in 1916 that declared Ireland a free and independent republic, were executed. It was a great way to learn more about Irish history. Then, we bought tickets for the hop on and hop off sightseeing bus to get to the Jameson Distillery. On the bus we went through The Phoenix Park. The audio guide on the bus said it was twice as big as Central Park. It was beautiful. The US embassy and the President of Ireland's house is located in this park. The Dublin Zoo is also located in this park. Laura ... read more

Sleeping in till 9 was glorious. It was nice not having to rush around to catch the bus. We put our luggage in storage at that hotel while we got some breakfast and headed to Trinity College. We went to a little cafe and had coffee and scones. The scone was a little different than the traditional scones I've had, but it was so good. Then, we walked down to Trinity College. Due to the walking tour our tour manager gave us last week, I actually know where I'm going. Although, I did need help finding the entrance. A nice American overheard us and pointing us in the right direction. The campus is so beautiful with its old buildings and green grass. We find where The Book of Kells is housed. There is a line, but ... read more

Last early morning wake up call...off to Dublin. We will be staying there for the rest of the trip. Our first stop before checking into the hotel is the Guinness Storehouse. I was so looking forward to seeing how Guinness is made. The storehouse has a museum that is hands on and very modern. It was neat seeing how the Guinness factory makes barley, hops, yeast, and water from the Wicklow mountains into the yummy concoction that it is. I learned a lot, especially that Guinness needs to be served in a cool pint glass drafted at 6 degrees Celsius. I still can't figure out why it tastes so different in the States. Locals told me it was due to the water. I'm nervous I won't like Guinness as much as I did before tasting it ... read more

Last night I learned some Irish step dancing. I knew it was difficult, but didn't know it was this hard. After a little bit, I get it down. We are a large group and its a small room, so we all get pretty hot. At least I got a cardio workout. Then, the professionals danced a bit for us. They were amazing, what talent! Then as we were leaving the pub, we could see that it was raining. I didn't bring my raincoat. The bartender was outside too and ran back in to get me an umbrella. I told him it was okay, that I didn't have far to walk. He insisted I take it; while making fun my of high pitched voice. The people of Ireland are so friendly and treat you as if you've ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Cork » Cork July 31st 2013

Well the typical Irish weather has caught up to us big time. It is cold, windy, and boy is it raining. This is definitely not a passing shower. We are off to county Clare to see the Cliffs of Mohr. These are the cliffs of insanity in "The Princess Bride". The weather is insanity too. The wind is whipping and the rain feels like little knives. As we approached the cliffs, we entered the visitor's center. I see many pictures of puffins. Puffins must come to this location! I begin to get excited, and cry. The thought that puffins might be nearby is overwhelming. Background: I absolutely love puffins. They are the cutest Arctic birds. Alas, as we make our way to the cliffs; I start to come down to the realization that no bird is ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Galway » Aran Islands July 30th 2013

It was yet another early start to make our way to the Aran Islands. I was very excited for this excursion because anyone whom I've spoken to about them, had nothing my amazing things to say. We took a bus 45 minutes to the ferry. It was pouring and I was getting nervous that the day would be a wash out. By the time we got on the ferry, the sun was shining and then skies were blue. I prayed that it would last. The ferry to the Aran Islands is about a 30-40 minutes. The views from the ferry are fantastic. The ferry rocked a bit too much for my liking, but it was fine. Once we got to the island, I picked up my bike rental from the bike hire. It looked like a ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Galway » Galway July 29th 2013

After being woken up by the fire alarm in the hotel at 6 am, we had breakfast and began our journey to Galway. I do enjoy a good Irish breakfast, however by the eighth day in a row I'm over it. Haha, I am sure after a few days of toast and cereal I'll be ready to enjoy it again. There are a few differences between American life and British/Irish (or quite possibly any other country) life. Hotels do not have air conditioning; last night the temperature was quite warm, so it was a bit uncomfortable. I have no idea what the temperature was because I can't convert the Celsius into Fahrenheit. Math is not my best skill and converting euros and the British pound is enough math for me. There is no fat free milk, ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin » Dublin » Ballsbridge July 28th 2013

Last night was incredible. It was a night to really enjoy the Irish Pub culture. Everyone is there for some fun and cheer. After breakfast, we got on the bus and headed for Belfast. Our tour guide will be teaching us an Irish pub song each morning on the bus. Today she taught us "Whiskey in the Jar"; good thing I'm Irish and already know it. Driving into the city, I can see some of the remnants of what the locals call "The Troubles". Some streets have the Union Jack and Northern Ireland flags and others have the tri-color. A local tour guide comes onto the bus to give us information about Belfast, its troubled past, and peaceful future. I could not possibly blog about all the information I learned about the struggles of Irish Catholics ... read more

Europe » Ireland » County Dublin » Dublin » Ballsbridge July 28th 2013

Finally had a good night's sleep with the help of the NyQuil sleep medicine. Some people were leaving the tour in Glasgow and a few more will meet us in Dublin. I'm so excited to go to Ireland! After breakfast we got on the bus to catch the ferry to Ireland across the Irish Sea. Good-bye Scotland; it's been fun! Once we got to the ferry stop, our bus went through security. Some people had their bags checked, just random checks. The bus drove right on the ferry. It is like a cruise ship, not that I've ever been on one or plan to. The food court, cafe, and bar take up the top deck and there is comfy seating all around. We sail past the island. It is where they get the granite to make ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Lanarkshire » Glasgow July 26th 2013

It was a bit difficult to wake up this morning. Some how I managed to make it to breakfast on time. After eating, we were off to the town of Stirling. On the way we stopped to see Hamish, the hairy cow. Evidently this is a tourist attraction?? Not really my thing...but we got onto he bus to go to Sterling Castle, which is very much my thing! The castle is very beautiful and the sun finally comes out. The grounds are so green and the landscaping is stunning. The castle is visitor friendly with many rooms designed to experience the castle. Each room has a person in authentic dress explaining features of the castle. Laura and I found thrones in the great hall. I had to sit and take a picture. It felt natural... I ... read more
