It's been a while, but we're back to the bloggin'. We arrived in Galway (the opposite side of Ireland from Dublin) yesterday and have had quite a little trip getting here! First off, we got to the airport and picked up Jesse's luggage (although she's still wearing the same panties and sandals), picked up the rental car, and started driving on the wrong side of the street! Without any glasses! WHERE'S THE ROAD!?! So that happened. The first day out we went to Glendalough, an ancient monastic site an hour south of Dublin. We hiked a little and had an all around good time! We drove south from there to a little hostel who's lawn we camped on that night. We woke up to, not roosters, but cows at 5:00 in the morning. Hazzah! Alrighty! We ... read more

03-05 May 06 First off I loved Galway! It was so beautiful there. It is right on the coast looking right out onto Canada. The first day I got up at 5:30. It actually wasn't that bad waking up so early but I think that is because I knew I would be able to sleep on the bus. I met Sarah at the bus stop at 6:45 to take the 7am bus. Jay and her friend Karyne from Canada, were also coming but they were going to take a later bus. It took around 3 1/2 hours to get to the opposite side of the island. It's hard to believe that this island is so small. In Canada that would only take you just outside of the city! Sarah and I arrived in Galway around 10:30 ... read more

Today is my birthday, but it seems that my husband is not going to do anything to acknowledge that until we reach our destination for today. :-( I think I irritated him by starting off late this morning - I stayed up late last night writing in my travel journal (the kind made of paper, bound in leather - remember those?), so I slept later than usual. By the time I got showered and dressed and we went downstairs, we had missed breakfast. Meanwhile, we did have a tea tray in the room, so Tim had at least had a nice cuppa, which is more than I had. Do I sound whiny and spoiled yet? Well what do you expect from someone who calls herself Baroness? So we hit the road on an empty stomach. God ... read more

Well, the plans are to be studying in Galway City at the National University of Ireland Galway. Taking courses in Gaelic & Ethnic Studies . . . then of course the intimate studies in the current pub situation of this magical isle. We've got a trip to the Newgrange megalithic site in Co. Meath. which will carry on into Dublin for a weekend, super psyched about that. I really want to get to the Aran Islands the following week. Our travels will then take us to Northern Ireland, to the Famine Museum and more in Strokestown, Derry, and Dunfanaghy. After all of this Emerald Isle rockin' the trip moves to London for a number of days. Nothing but a great time ahead of this Cali boy. Keep rockin' and I hope these journals, which will ... read more

Galway is a relaxing, picturesque get-away to the past. It's beautiful, quaint and full of life. The buildings are preserved and the roads are cobblestone. So many walkers filled the streets that I felt like part of a river carving through the town. Do not purchase your Eurail train pass in advance. Train workers in Ireland can strike at a day's notice. I paid 250 USD for my Eurail pass and couldn't use it once in Ireland. We wanted to take the fast train down to the Ring of Kerry and to the Blarney Castle, but, alas, what could have been accomplished in a short train ride became an eight-hour bus ride. So we went to Galway, instead. I don't regret it. Galway's on the coast, so we could see the waves crashing against the cliffs ... read more

I left Limerick on Monday and went to Doolin in Co. Clare. I saw the Cliffs of Moher. They were impressive but there were too many tourists. They really kind of ruined it for me. I stayed in a nice hostel in Doolin and went out and saw some really good traditional Irish music. I like the pubs in Doolin because its such a small town and young and old people all hang out together. And old Irish dude was singing after the music ended til the place closed. I was a little disappointed that I didn't get to cycle around the Burren due to fouuuul weather. Before I left Doolin yesterday, some girls from the hostel took me out for bloody marys. What a great thing to wake up to on your birthday. I took ... read more

Today Emily and I set out on a pretty last minute adventure to the lovely city of Galway, Ireland. Originally we had not planned to travel to Ireland becasue we just didn't feel that we had the time or the money to make the trek. After hearing over and over how amazing Ireland is and how we have to go check it out while we are in the area we decided to check out flights and found a pretty sweet deal through Ryan Air. Beause niether Emily nor I had much particular interest in any specific city and because we don't really care for the large metropolitan areas we decided to go to Galway instead of Dublin. After living in Oxford I didn't think towns existed that could be much smaller but after traveling to Galway ... read more

On Tuesday I took a bus that got me into Galway at 11:00 pm. The only places that take people in at that hour are Youth Hostels. The Sleepzone was hoping with the energy of a collage dorm on a Friday night. Not surprising since this was spring break in places like France and Spain. The poolroom was full of French teens. The Internet room was full of female American exchange students talking about hair coloring. The TV room was full of their male counterparts, sprawled out on the couches watching baseball from America. Each and every one of them had a laptop propped on their reclined lap: watching statistics, IM’ing friends back home and sneaking porn I suppose. It was like the new phallic symbol, demonstrating the American virility and computing power. There is nothing ... read more

Waking at 9.30am I realised I had about half an hour to shower, get changed and take advantage off the complimentry brekfast, then another half hour to get checked out and get to the bus station where I needed to get the bus to a place galled Galway. 4 hours North, on the tip off the Atlantic Ocean. On top off that my head hurts. After gulping my Marmolade and Toast I headed out to the bus... which I missed... by about 20minutes. I had 2 hours to spare untill the next one. I headed over to a huge church (religion is so so so so huuuuge hear) and checked out what was going on, then went to a shopping centre which was half open. I grabbed an Irish Flute!! When the bus finnally did come ... read more
