A very varied and sensationally enjoyable day. Halfway between Avoca and Rathdrum we came across “The Meeting”, so called because of the meeting of two clear, free flowing rivers coming from the Wicklow Mountains through lush countryside that had us wanting to stay, look and listen for more time than what we did. Winding our way further up the mountains we came across Glendalough and many, many cyclists. It was a long weekend in Ireland, so with the sun out, the Irish were out. However, these cyclists were participating in the 110 and 140km challenge through the mountains. There was no shouting from slow moving vehicles at the cyclists, no throwing of material; just slow and courtesy. We stopped and took photos of a few and made comments. Many stopped to chat, thankful for an excuse ... read more

Today Kathy and I headed to north of Dublin to Howth. Leaving Castleknock, we took the 38 bus (which is becoming our favorite) to Dublin City Center and walked to the DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) station and headed to Raheny, between Dublin and Howth, to stay at the Four Seasons B&B. We are staying in Raheny because it is just a short train ride to Howth and the B&Bs in Howth are pricey. After check-in, we headed to Howth and...you guessed it...a couple of Guiness. After tooling around the port and some hiking up the hill about 2 miles, we dined at The House restaurant. The House was recommended by Evelyn, our host at the AirBnB in Castleknock. Life is good with steamed mussels and a cool white. Interesting enough, Captain Bligh from "Mutiny on ... read more

Happy July 4th from Ireland! I woke up bright and early, put on my stars and stripes tank top, and checked the forecast which showed nothing but beautiful sunshine all day long! Tim, Cheyenne and I headed down to to the city center to check out the Temple Bar Market. There were many tents filled with books, fresh food, and live music. There is no better way to Independence Day than with good food, great music, and awesome people. We tried some fresh Guinness bread and veggie bruschetta before taking a bus to Phoenix Park. This 2,718 acre park beats anything I've see before. There were people riding horses, children rolling down hills, and people laying out in the endless green fields. We explored the park and found the American Ambassadors Residence which was a giant, ... read more

03/04/2013 - Howth Our roommates at the hostel turned out to be rather noisy and generally unkind (seriously, kids, if you go back to the dorms at 1 a.m., you're quiet as mice and definitely don't spend another hour discussing this nice guy at the bar, what a cliché!), we got out of the room as soon as we could (as we couldn't sleep anyway), feeling a bit tired. I guess that's why it took us ages to find the entrance to the Connolly Station. Well, we didn't in fact find it - we got there through the car park from the back. Serves us right for not taking the tram. Our goal for today was Howth - the suburb of Dublin. The DART train goes there twice per hour, the journey takes about 25 minutes ... read more

We left Troon after a slight delay, when the water strainer had to be repaired. It was quite windy when we left but luckily off the land. We were heading for Stranraer. The wind was behind us, force 7-8 with a gale force imminent, not the best forecast to hear after we had set off! But the sea was calm and by 16,45 we were approaching Loch Ryan. We sailed up to the marina in Stranraer after checking by phone that they had a place large enough for us...well the pontoon they wanted us to tie onto was almost impossible to get into with the wind, and at the crucial moment the bow thruster cut out, alan had been using it to stop him going onto a bank while we were reorganisng the ropes, there was so ... read more

Dublin Updates So I have come to the conclusion that my love for Dublin grows every day I'm here. The beginning of my semester here was the epitome of a roller coaster as I went back and forth between my excitement for being here and loving all of the new people I met to feeling lost and confused and homesick. But after solidifying some great friendships and learning to live as the Irish do, I can safely say I absolutely love it here. Some of my favorite things include: 1. The people - There is a degree of kindness and trust here unlike anything you'll see in the states. People will help you out that don't even know you. If you're short change at a cafe they just let you just take it. When you finish ... read more
