As our Icelandic friend told us the night before, a wind storm was coming. We still made our way north towards the Golden Circle from Reykjavik the next morning before being turned around about 10km onto the route. There were many stopped cars and ahead of them we could see massive wind gusts and snow blowing across the road, which didn't look to be letting up any time soon; I was bummed as I was looking forward to imparting my geologic knowledge onto some unsuspecting teenagers. So, we turned around to head back on Highway 1 south towards Vik. After getting a little lost in Reykjavik, we made our way to our destination. I knew we were going up the mountain pass, but I was amazed at how scared I was driving here; I grew up ... read more

Tuesday, 22 September 2015 Höfn to Kirkjubæjarklaustur, Iceland Although we didn't necessarily sleep in, we were still the last ones to leave the hotel that morning. Back on the Ring Road, we started the stretch where we could see glaciers from the road. View Vatnajökull from Ring Road One of our favorite stops was at the glacier lagoon, Jökulsárlón. This lake is situated on the edge of Vatnajökull National Park and is found right off the Ring Road. Here we saw a seal lazily roaming around the large pieces of ice as if it were swimming in a large glass of ice water. Jökulsárlón has been the filming location of several major films such as A View to Kill, Die Another Day, Laura Croft: Tomb Raider and Batman Begins. The TV show the Amazing Race also ... read more

Prve dva dni sme sa vybrali cez Golden Circle - Geysir, Gulfos, jedno padnute ... read more

With no other ideas of what to do, and the desire to see puffins, we all set off for the South Coast – in a single car this time as we had no luggage. We went straight to Seljalandfoss, a long drive, because no one wanted to go to the Njal’s Saga museum again. We did get gasoline in Hverdagerdi, but didn’t visit the lovely bakery again. At Seljalandfoss, we made an effort to do something new. Of course we walked behind the waterfall again, but it didn’t have the same magic the second time. On the other hand, Kai did it – bravely – for the first time. This time, we walked along a pathway to the left, which I hadn’t remembered from last time, and found the hidden waterfall. Several waterfalls must be passed, ... read more

Kävimme aamulla katsomassa viereistä Skogafossin putousta. Ajoimme sitten 30 km itään ja kävimme katsomassa Vikin mustaa hiekkarantaa. Sen pidemmälle emme jatkaneet itään, vaan käännyimme takaisin. Paluumatkalla satoi. /b... read more

Having limped to our hotel in the dark in a snow storm the previous night we hadn't seen anything of our surroundings so it was a total surprise to see what a beautiful spot we are in when I open my curtains and blink in the bright sunshine streaming in the next morning. I quickly get showered and dressed and have a spot of breakfast before heading out to explore. Close behind the hotel is a big mountain range, the snow dazzling off its steep sides in streaky patterns. In front, only a few hundred metres away, is the sea! What a wonderful setting for a hotel and how lucky are we to be greeted by sunshine. I head down towards the fenced off cliff looking down on the seashore and spot a couple of curious ... read more

So today I begin my 2-day trip to the south of Iceland with EXTREME Iceland. I'm hoping the tour company's name provides the exciting trip it seems to promise. I've been looking forward to this trip more than any other so expectations are high. I'm picked up at my hotel and taken to Extreme Iceland's base where Bjorn our tour leader for the trip is waiting for us in a minibus that quickly fills up with people among whom are lots of excitable young Chinese girls! As we set off we have problems with Bjorn's headset mike - he's on his own so needs to be driver and guide as he's going along so this is kinda important equipment. We even have to go back to base to sort it out which isn't a good start, ... read more

Yesterday evening we were treated to a fantastic sunset behind the mountains but the saying about red sky at night did not hold true as today was rainy, not fully but for much of the day. As the forecast was for the wind building during the course of the day we decided to start off by taking route 222, which leaves the main route 1 not too far from Skógar where we are staying. It is shown as only 10k long to the foot of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier with a tourist hut/shelter at the end and sounded ideal. Unfortunately what is shown on the map as a brown road, meaning it is gravel but well graded, turned out to be worse than most of the tracks we have been on, full of large rocks and very ... read more

Another day, another hotel, but we are slowly making our way back towards Reykjavík. We woke this morning to rain, but not to be put off we headed out to the glacial lake Jökulársón where the glacier slowly breaks up into icebergs and they float out to sea. We went out to see the main glacier on a zodiac boat which was fantastic. No seats – you just perch on the inflatable edge and hang on to rope handles. Although we were layered up and they dressed us up in survival suits and life jackets, it was still cold with the rain and spray but the views were fantastic. Because it is warm the tops of the icebergs slowly melt away and then they flip over and the undersides are bright turquoise, the tops are mixtures ... read more

Today was our last full day in the highlands. Tomorrow we move on again and it will be our longest journey as we move round to the east coast. We also spotted the tide line on the car from yesterday’s fording of rivers, and I am more impressed by the door seals and the engine especially as it does not have a snorkel fitted (one of those high level air intakes). All week we have been coming across cyclists touring the island carrying all of their kit; I must say I did not expect to see any today as it has only been about 8 degrees and with the wind it has felt a lot colder than that. But there they were slogging away against the terrain and weather. We assume that they must be doing ... read more
