So very tired already....yaaaaaawwwnnnn. The 8+ hour flight was uneventful (which, lets face it, is how we hope all flights go). Departed and arrived on time. Sweet. But with an overnight flight and the time difference (Budapest is 6 hours ahead of Ottawa) I am working hard to stay awake to get on Eastern European time. Travelling in and out of my home country of Canada a lot, and very often to (or through) our US neighbours, I'm super used to a thorough "what is the purpose of your travel" and "how long will you be here" and "do you have anything to declare" when we get to Customs. Even when coming home we have declaration forms to fill out that are handed out on the plane before we land. Not so for Hungary - no ... read more

Our final stop on the magical trip is Budapest. How did we get here so quickly? Where did the time go, Prague is already a distant memory....Tres Tragic! We had only a few hours in Bratislava because the ship was to sail into Budapest at night. All the buildings would be lit up. We ate dinner and waited for 10:00PM to come. It was pitch dark outside and nothing to see on either side. Everyone was up on the Sun deck staring at the bow of the ship as if waiting for a show to begin. Cameras in hand and all were silent..... We began to see lights in the distance so many it almost looked like the sun was going to rise. Slowly as we came closer you could make out the shapes of buildings ... read more

Today is our only full day in Budapest and I also realize it is our final full day on board the the Viking ship Hermod. It has become so familiar to us. We walk down the passageways and stop and chat with other passengers as if we have been neighbors for years. We settled in easily and wonderfully and now so quickly tomorrow we leave Hungary, Eastern Europe to begin our journey home. We have one last tour today after breakfast and as we enter the dining room I see it with new eyes thinking this is my last breakfast here. We sit and are waited on by Alex and Polina, it has been exactly this way for the last 8 days but this morning it feels very different. We are called to make our way ... read more

Headed out for our kick starter coffee, this time at a hipster Coffee Shop where you could order coffee to your taste from major regions of the world. We chose Italiano, and the coffee hit the spot. Next stop was to join up with the Free Walking Tour of Budapest, which covered both Pest and Buda. Our guide again was a young Hungarian lady, who provided a history lesson on the establishment of both cities and their development down through the ages and their eventual merger into the city of Budapesht (how locals pronounce the city name). We then crossed the famous Chain Bridge and walked up the steep hill to Budapest Castle. Budapest Castle overlooks the city and the Danube River, and it’s history dates back to when it was a Roman Fort. The castle ... read more

We hit the ground running this morning, heading out for a kick starter coffee at the California Coffee Co located in the shadows of St Stephens Basilica. From there we walked across the square to visit the Basilica, and it didn't disappoint. The interior has around eleven different types of imported marble used in the construction, and the reliquary is said to contain the "incorruptible" right hand of Saint Stephen, the first king of Hungary. Equal in height with the Hungarian Parliament Building, it is one of the two tallest buildings in Budapest at 96 metres. This equation symbolises that worldly and spiritual thinking have the same importance in Hungary. Following our visit to the Basilica, we made our way to join the Free Walking Tour of Budapest. We have found the Free Walking Tours (donation at ... read more

Budapest is one of the largest cities in the European Union, having a 2016 population of 1.75 million people. The site was originally settled by the Celts, and later by the Romans, who named the city Aquincum. The name derives from two settlements, Buda, on the high side of the river where the castle complex is located, and Pest, on the lower side of the river. The city has been conquered by Mongols, Turks and in 1711 became part of the Habsburg dynasty. but retained independence. As we were driven from the airport to our accommodation, I was looking out the window at drab Soviet style buildings and run down infrastructure, and was questioning whether Budapest was in fact one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. As we entered the central part of the city, however, the ... read more

Almost six months without travelling, I don't know how we did it! The minute my passport arrived, we were already booking our flights to Budapest for 5 days. Budapest is a great place for at least a long weekend. There are plenty of Spas to relax in, big and small, great views over looking the Danube river and over the city, great architecture and unique nightlife locations. We visited the famous Széchenyi Thermal Bath which looks amazing on the inside but also the most popular and busiest. They have countless different pools, inside and out with varying temperatures. The other Spa we visited was the smaller and more authentic looking called Kiraly Medicinal Baths which was much quieter and even cheaper. We found ourselves in a suitable AirBnb just up the road from the infamous ruin ... read more

Well we awoke to rain! Did that slow us down? No way! We just put on our rain coats and set out for the day. Thankfully the rain stopped later in the morning and it turned out to be a very nice day, especially since the temperatures were in the 70's. Central Market was our first stop of the day. We always find the markets informative and interesting since the local people shop there and we can determine their interests. There were plenty of meat counters selling chicken, turkey, and duck and very few of them had any beef. Countless vendors were selling all types of sausages both fresh and smoked. Paprika was the spice of choice. It came in all sizes of containers and fresh too. The usual fruits and vegetables were in abundance, all ... read more

Budapest is pretty cool! There, blog done! ? For those who don’t know, Budapest is two cities – Buda, and Pest – and they are separated by the Danube river. Buda is the hilly side, and Pest is much flatter so a lot more residential. I arrived on the train and went on the metro line to Astoria near my hostel. The escalator to the tube was so steep! I’m nearly always off balance with TP anyway, so I had to cling to the handrail for the practically 5 minute descent. And yes, the tube station in Budapest does smell like all the others! I managed to find my hostel (which was in the Pest side), conveniently located next to a ‘Karavan Street Food’ market, and after ditching TP, I went and bought a cucumber & ... read more

What a wonderful morning! Our first stop, after breakfast of course, was the Szechnyi Baths. This was the first 19th century thermal bath in Budapest. It opened temporarily in 1881 and once it became popular a permanent structure was built. Today it is one of the largest public baths in Europe. It resembles a Palace rather than a public bath. There are 15 medicinal pools in the bath complex and 3 huge outdoor pools. There are 10 sauna/steam rooms. The pools are fed by natural springs and 15 of the pools are mineral pools. We experienced several of the thermal pools, a sauna, and two of the outdoor pools. It was very refreshing since the temperatures are again in the mid 90's. After several hours we needed to move on in order to see the other ... read more
