We started today’s route riding on quiet lanes and dykes. It seemed that we didn’t read our navigation instructions properly and ended up on a busy road, on the wrong side of the railway tracks, though thankfully only for a few kilometers. We eventually found the route and cycle lanes into the centre. The route into the city follows the Danube, passing Margaret Island and a number of bridges. We were aiming to cross at the Chain Bridge, where we would be within a kilometre of our accommodation at Wombat Hostel. The entrance is spectacular, passing impressive buildings and monuments, including the Parliament building on the opposite bank. To the right are the Fisherman’s Bastion, Matthias Church and the citadel. The roads were busy, but the bike lanes were good. After crossing the Chain bridge, we ... read more

We had a very comfortable stay at Ister Apartments in Esztergom. Tunde our host, was very friendly and helpful and had looked after us very well, keeping us supplied with fresh fruit and tomatoes from her garden. We set off at 10, on a not too strenuous day, about 60 km, that would allow us time to do a few excursions on route, taking ferry crossings on the river, and exploring the towns along the river. A quiet cycle lane hugging the Danube takes you out of Esztergom, but we had to take a short stretch of busy road, about 4.5k to our first ferry crossing to Szob (fare 900 forint, 450+450 for bike). Cycle lane follows the river through the beautiful Danube Bend where it breaks between steep mountainside and cliffs. At Nagymaros we took ... read more

Our last day in Budapest started with a short walk to the Great Synagogue on Dohany Street to start our tour of the Jewish Quarter. This synagogue, the largest in Europe and second largest in the world, is also significant as a monument to the remembrance of the victims of the Holocaust. We started the tour at the Jewish Museum, which contains many beautiful donated artifacts, and then moved on to view the synagogue and the grounds which contain the Heroes' Temple, the graveyard, and the Memorial. We visited the graveyard where over two thousand of those who died in the ghetto from hunger and cold during 1944-1945 are buried. The names of those who were able to be identified line the mass grave. To the back of it is the Heroes' Temple, which is used ... read more

Our second day in Budapest, we decided to cross the chain bridge and explore the Buda side and its two hills, Gellert and Varhegy. Our hotel was within easy walking distance so, after a very generous and varied breakfast buffet that was included with our stay, we made our way leisurely across the beautiful bridge and headed along the Danube towards Gellert Hill. It was hot, much hotter than we had hoped, so not rushing was a must. The Danube Promenade on the Buda side was lined with nice parks, and lots of restaurants and cafes. It was a nice stroll. The climb to the hill was challenging, with equal parts steps and steep lanes, but we stopped at various levels for a break and to admire the view from different levels. There are shady benches ... read more

The flight to Budapest was brutal, New Orleans to Detroit, Detroit to Amsterdam with a four hour lay over in Amsterdam, and then another flight to Budapest. It started very cheerfully. We had premium seats so, before the plane even left, we had been greeted with a glass of sparkling wine. We had a couple more, and then wine with dinner, and after dinner. But then there were only a couple of hours left to the flight and I found it impossible to get any sleep. So, by the time we arrived in Amsterdam, the euphoria from the start of the trip and the wine had long left me. The arrival in Amsterdam was surprising, because we only had to clear passport check and then we were back in the airport waiting for our next flight. ... read more

Romantic Danube Viking River Cruise Viking had a sale on this voyage offering $300 airfare so I booked it in late 2017 and saved over $2,000 on airfare. I also decided not to spend extra for an extension before or after since this was just one of three vacations we had planned this summer I was trying to lilmit spending a little. The total was $7,800. This was a cruise that I had been wanting to take because it goes to Vienna and Budapest. Viking shows an amazing aerial view of the parliament building in Budapest in most of its advertisements and that caught my eye. It is an eight day and seven night cruise. Once again we chose a French balcony cabin because we feel like we want to be able to watch the countryside ... read more

Went downstairs to eat breakfast and there were 200 people in line. It pays to be gold. We went back upstairs to the executive lounge and had breakfast there, no wait, good food. After breakfast we went in search of the Viking representative and located them on floor -1. We told them we weren’t going on the included tour since we had done it last year, instead we asked them about the hop on/off tour. He explained we could get the tour along with the optional tour down the side of the mountain (where we were). We choose that option as I was NOT going to hike up and down this mountain. We met the electric car in old town and enjoyed our ride down the mountain. At the bottom we transferred to the hop on/off ... read more

Statues seem to be the thing in Budapest When we spot something that we think sticks out or is special in a place we occasionally dedicate an entire blog to this. We think of these as theme blogs. This selection of "theme" is made in a totally non-scientific way. It's only what we personally find interesting and what pops up in our minds when we try to absorb everything at once. Examples of these "theme blogs" are Bulgaria - monuments Kotor, Montenegro - balconies Sur, Oman - doors Cuba - Yank Tanks Rome, Italy - fountains ... read more

HE SAID... We were wide awake at 4am, so we caught up on a few work-related issues before heading down to breakfast at 7:30am. And like the day before, it was a fantastic affair – endless varieties of bread, cheese, cured meats and pastries, along with cereals, tea and juices. We knew we wouldn’t be eating until 2pm, so we fuelled up for a morning of walking. We headed straight for Elizabeth Town and the Jewish Quarter to get a feel for our neighbourhood, as it was very close to our hotel. With the help of a friendly local, we found a bank to withdraw some cash, then walked a short distance to the Great Synagogue for a guided tour of the second largest Jewish house of worship in the world. Our guide was a young ... read more
