Poros is such a short trip from the capital and is worth it to get away from Athens and to see the white rocks of the hills peeking through smattering of vegetation and contrasting with the heavy blue water and the bare firmament in the Mediterranean breeze.... read more

We are sitting in an internet cafe in Corinth which has large glass windows overlooking the Gulf of Corinth. Today is a public holiday and almost everything in Greece is closed. We managed to get a bus here - the suburban train network was closed today but we are grateful for the excellent public transport system in Greece. The 90 minute trip from Athens cost only 7 Euros each and if the train had been operating it would have been much cheaper. The metro system in Athens puts NSW trains to shame. It is clean, efficient, reliable and very cheap - costing only 80cents to travel basically anywhere on the metro. The train system, however, has been one of the few things I have been impressed with in Athens. It's messy and dirty and chaotic. Richard ... read more

To everyone who told us that we really should go to Santorini; thanks. We arrived exhausted and wondering if we would be able to get accomodation. The boat seemed to pull into the side of an enormous black cliff. For a moment it appeared as if we would have to either fly (difficult without wings) or get out the climbing equipment and start scaling the cliff face. On closer inspection, each of the buildings that lined the port turned out to be either an accomodation booking agency or car rental. Ten minutes later we were sitting in the courtesy van on the way to our hotel. In another ten, we were lazing by the pool and admiring the view. Santorini was formed by the volcano that destroyed the Minoan civilisation on Crete. When you look out ... read more

We are tired tonight after driving all day. Greek television is really really bad and we don't like night clubs or bars, so the internet cafes are good places to hang out. At the risk of boring you, I'd like to recommend a few strategies for coping with driving in Greece tonight, and catch up on some of the amazing sites we have visited at a later date. Driving in major suburban centres: 1. Road rules are more like driving suggestions than rules. 2. At intersections, the person who has the nose of their car in fron has right of way. 3. The above rule does not apply if the person in front hesitates. 4. One way streets are only one way when nobody is travelling in the opposite direction. 5. Parking is allowed. Any direction, ... read more

The title of this blog is a quote from Ilias, the guy at the hotel who has been looking after us for the last four days. I haven't seen much of Greece yet, but already I am starting to believe him. Ilias has taken care of everything. He tells us our itinerary for the day, he sorts our banking, he gives his number to the laundromat so that he can explain what we want, he provides maps, he organises the car, provides important logistical and historical information on the places we are visiting and generally has become our best friend in Greece. Today he offered to take us touring to Sparta with his mates on his day off. We declined because it would have meant leaving the hotel by 8am - but the offer was very ... read more

We got up late today. Greek people have a different sense of time. They have a kind of siesta at 2pm when most of the shops close. They eat dinner very, very late. 9.30pm is peak hour in town. By then, all the little kids are up playing in the park and, a little later, all the older mums and dads are dining out in the inumerable restaurants that dominate the towns. We are slowly getting into synch with this way of life, so we were up walking the wall of the old venetian harbour till after 1am last night - hence the late rising. We were feeling a little touched by the sun after lounging by the beach yesterday so we decided to head to the cool of the mountains today. It was a great ... read more

As I was walking along, checking out the Minoan ruins and looking for the restaurant featured in our travel guide, Adonis accosted me. That was his name. Really. He looked a little like a middle aged Paul Newman - all blue eyes and charm. He gave me some flowers and told me that they are native to Crete. He said that every spring, all over Crete, people wait for the flowering of their special flower which makes all the streets smell so sweet. I've since discovered that they are a type of Daphne (Daphne sericea for the scientists). What a lovely way to be welcomed to Chania (pronounced Hahnia), one of the largest cities in Crete. When we arrived, we weren't so sure. The ferry got into port after 8pm and after walking around with heavy ... read more

Hello my fellow travelers! This is first and only post I'll do about a trip to Greece from August 22 to September 4, 1997 that I did together with my parents, my uncle Anders and my grandmother Evy. During our stay on Crete we lived in a beautiful apartment in the picturesque little village of Platanias. It's a quiet little hamlet with only a few thousand inhabitants but despite it's small stature though there is no shortage of pleasurable ways to spend your time here. There's a plethora of wonderful restaurants with really good Greek cuisine. For our first few days we took it easy, spending much on the beach near our apartment. One evening our hotel arranged a very nice show with both local dancers, performing traditional dances, as well as our own travel guides ... read more

Oh yes, it has been all of 12 years since I made that memorable 38 day trip to Europe visiting Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Egypt and Israel. I found my 1996 journal, so that helps. But memories started flooding my mind of a time when I snagged my longest-ever leave of absence from work, risked losing my job in the bank, or at very least fall out of favor from the bank's owners. None of that happened. Now living a semi-retired life, I plan to break up this long journey into several blogs to chronicle how much fun one can get in their early 40's! Athens First off, GREECE. We left Manila for Athens with a single stopover in Singapore. It was a long wait for our connecting flight, but Changi Airport is one airport worth ... read more
