As you can tell by now, I have spent the day in an internet cafe getting you all up to date. Maybe I'm a little homesick today and this is my way of feeling like I'm talking to each of you. I arrived in Athens on the 29th after a 5 hr ferry from Santorini (still sad to leave there). I met a great Aussie couple, Dino and Laina, who stayed at my hotel in Santorini and were also going to Athens for the night. I'll just call them my guardian angels of Athens as they took me under their wing. We took the metro together into the city. We parted ways when we got to the city and I dedided to hotel hunt as I did not book one prior. After a few hours and ... read more

Today we took a traditional sailboat tour. The first stop was Nea Kameni island, the active volcano. A 1.4km walk up to the breathtaking crater where we had a stunning view of its vastness. There was a hole dug, about a foot deep where the stones are hot enough to boil an egg in 20 minutes. Mmm...smell that sulfur. Our second stop was Palea Kameni island where we visit the hot springs. We are informed that to get there we jump off the boat into the cold ocean and swim a short ways to the hot springs. No the guide was not kidding! Everyone that decided to go rubbed the iron rich mud on themselves with the notion that it is great for the skin. This poor American guy got stung by a jellyfish. Amie told ... read more

9 am we met Tony and Manolos at the front of the restaurant. Tony suggests coffee at the beach. So we each hopped onto the back of a moped. They took the senic route overlooking the cliffs of Santorini 300m high with stunning views of the caldera while overtaking buses, cars and other vehicles. We don't have any pictures of this due to the priority of holding on for dear life. Mom, you and Amie now have matching tail-pipe burns :) We ended up in Parissa beach on the other side of the island and enjoyed some iced coffee with our new friends. An hour later, they left for work. We stayed on the beach a little longer, dipped our toes in the black sand ocean before heading back. The rest of the day was spent ... read more

We were welcomed to Santorini by hords of hotel owners who decided that we should stay at their establishment. But we choses the basics of 'Camping Santorini' which included hard beds in a two person tent without pillows and with plenty of little bug friends. We hadn't had a decent meal since the plane ride so it was time for some real Greek food. The cobblestone streets of Fira (Thira) boast plenty of fine Greek restaraunts and tavernas. We were starving and allowed ourselves to be suckered in by the first restaurant host to approach us. The place was 'El Greco'. Half a liter of wine and lamb souvlaki later we find ourselves chatting to Tony, the manager of the place. A complimentary glass of wine each is brought out. Tony sits down and talks to ... read more

We're on the fabulous island of Santorini. The population is about 2000 ppl according to Lonely Planet and I think that half of the population here must work in jewellry stores and tacky tourist shops. I'm a bit mystified by the number of jewellry stores here... do women get their men to buy them baubles on vacation?? I must admit that I had this misconception that Santorini was filled with these blue-domed buildings. These, I've actually only seen on churches. The rest of the buildings are white-domed but no worries... there seems to be a church every kilometre or so for your phototaking needs. Two things I have to rant about in greece: bikinis and showers. 1st. bikinis. the new fad around here seems to be this new bikini bottom. Its smaller than a bikini bottom ... read more

Hi Everyone, I'll keep this short and sweet. We have made it safely to Athens. The flight was long but Lufthansa serves really good food - and you get wine with dinner and shots with your coffee! I was always under the impression that it would cost you an arm and a leg on the plane. Anyways, we are exhasted - 25hrs awake and counting... I think its time for bed. We are off to Santorini tomorrow and hopefully we will have some pictures and exciting stories to tell! Cheers! Amie & Angele ... read more

Geo: 37.11, 25.38We arrived in Naxos on Tuesday morning via a flight from Athens. The plane was only a 50 seater Fokker Friendship (50 year old plane we think!) so a bit scary and the runway at Naxos airport was tiny. We didn't prebook a hotel as it appeared from my research that there were heaps to choose from and that we should be able to barter the price down as peak season doesn't start until July/August. We caught a cab from the airport and took the first place we saw to save us dragging our bags around. There were indeed plenty of hotels, so many that we didn't really know where to start. And most of them are almost brand new or still being built as tourism in Naxos is still in its infancy. In ... read more

Ok. I'm actually writing this entry the same day as my previous one regarding Rethymno but I figure the last one is lot to read and most won't have read it in entirety to appreciate the humour. We're now in Iraklio/Heraklion which is the biggest city in Crete. We took the bus this morning from Rethymno, dropped off our stuff at our hotel and took the bus to Knossos. I suppose it was a good thing that Knossos is the most famous archaeological site in Iraklio so they actually have a specific bus route that goes (for cheap) to Knossos. The Con - every tour group also goes there. We got there and we were surrounded by swarms of tour groups. That wasn't a big deal as we had our nifty letter from the Ministry of ... read more

Geo: 37.9792, 23.7166We've had a great day today. We arrived in Naxos yesterday from Athens after spending one night in a pretty nice room overlooking the Acroplis. It has taken us a couple of days to get into the Greek way of doing things but now we are into it and having a ball. We spent a fairly relaxing day in Paris strolling along the Siene (river) and checking out the Notre Dame. It was interesting watching the barges cruise down the river and looking in at all the little streets along the way. Not to mention the the fabulous food.I was into a cheese fix after being in Japan which was no problem in France. We didn't have anything in particular in mind apart from soaking up the atmosphere so just spent a bit of ... read more
