6/29-7/3 After a lovely stay in Crete we were told that Santorini is a must see. We were fortunate enough to time it right and meet up with our friends Jay and Stephanie who were vacationing there. After checking out there posh accomodations we found a cheaper version with less amenities (but an incredible view) next door and pretended we were guests at their fancier hotel while sitting poolside. A tad embarrassing but all in the spirit of backpacking. Santorini has such amazing natural beauty formed from volcanic rock. We had a great time exploring the dormant and active volcanos. Luckily we were told they have tons of electronic equipment that can detect an eruption at least a month in advance, so no need to fear. The four of us set out for a motorbike tour ... read more

So we actually are in Paradise today! Paradise beach! This place is really nice, and we just moved into our new campground this morning. It was great, we checked out and Dan vespa'ed all of our luggage over to the new campground (with a huge smile on his face because FINALLY he could go the speed that I wouldn't let him go yesterday). Then we walked along the cliffs connecting the beaches to geth back. It was a beautiful morning. Our cabin is so much nicer in comparison to the other one. There is a breeze, the beds are comfy, its white and bright instead of black with no natural light. Its a world away from the shit that we were staying in. And get this... its 10 euros cheaper a night and we get breakfast ... read more

Hello all from the people in the shitty camping.... Well it is the big man for tonight doing the blog and so here I go. As Robyn was saying yesterday, our campground is defently not what we were expecting. In fact it is a pice of crap and we really don't want to be there at all........ The cabins are hot, with out the wind blowing through them at all, and dirty. Last night we decided to to the time honored solution to the problem and get drunk off cheap wine, out of tetra packs no less. It worked wonderfuly well and by the time we had finished off the wine it was about 3 in the morning..... gee, time seems to fly when drinking cheap wine =) So we ended up sleeping till about noon ... read more

Hello to one and all, It is day two of our Mykonos excursion, and the place is still beautiful. I just have to get a little rant out of the way first. I'm sad to report that our campground is NOTHING like the amazing ones in Italy, not in the slightest. We are paying 40 euros a night for a dirty, shitty beach cabin with no A/C, its a little brutal. However it is on a cliff right near the beach, so that is really nice. I just beg to ask the question, would you prefer a view or a good nights sleep... Its a bit tough to swallow seeing as we paid 30 euros in santorini for a room with kitchenette, balcony, ensuite, A/C.... ouch. This aside, Mykonos is still beautiful, however those coming here, ... read more

Ladies and gentlemen, the wine here is so good. I'm in love. I am especially fond of the house white wines, I havn't had a bad one yet! My new favourite meal is a big Gyro pita with lots of tzatiki (sp) sauce and a half litre of wine. Ohhhh it makes me all happy inside and out. Its crazy cause a glass of the house white is normally like 1-2 euros, but you can get a half litre of the house white for like 3-5 euros... So that begs the question stated in my title. Why have one glass when you could have 3, be so happy, and have such a better value?! Ohh I love Greek logic! So today we are in Mykonos. We were supposed to be here yesterday, but the winds here ... read more

Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Naxos June 28th 2006

Yes...I seem to be behind again. I will attempt to be prompt as it's midnight in Naxos right now, and I have the rather unglamorous task of registering for my classes in an hour. Oh happy day. So when I last left off we were going a little nuts in the shopping department in Florence. One most notable thing about our time in Florence I must mention, was the fact that I had the best meal of my life. Il Trattoria Casalinga...omg. It all began with the local specialty, Rabollita soup, followed by some roasted potatoes swimming in olive oil and garlic, and topped up of course with Tiramisu. Definite trip highlight oh my. Italy was not kind to our waste-lines or wallets, but it still definitely ranks very close to #1 among all the countries ... read more

So we are in Santorini, as everyone knows... or at least those who have read the last blog. So much fun here, its so beautiful and so amazing. Its skorching hot here, but its actually really pleasant because of the sea breezes. Today we did the Vespa thing, except they wouldn't give us full insurance because we didn't have motorcycle licenses. I didn't like this, so instead we have a quad bike (ATV) and have been buzzing around on 4 wheels instead of 2. Still so fun, and safer to have insurance. So first we went out to the red sand beach, that was amazing. The cliffs are all read and the ocean is crystal clear. Amazing sight. Then to the Southern most tip of the island to get some good views by a light house ... read more

Hello to one and all, We are in BEAUTIFUL Santorini in the Cyclades of Greece. Wow, I can't believe I was actually contimplating not coming here because of the cost of ferries. The experience is well worth it. So we took an 8 hour ferry from Athens (leaving at 7:30) and arrived in the Santorini port expecting to see our ride... They never showed, so we got scooped up by some other pushy, but friendly man who was amoung the many throngs of hotel reps trying to get us to stay at their hotel. We are staying in Perrisa, a black sandy beach town. So pretty. The water is wonderful and there are many cheap and nice (not crap!) shops. We have 3 days on the island before we go to Mykonos. Yesterday was day 1, ... read more

I've been 1 day to Rhodes and it was a great experience. We went from Marmaris (Turkey) to Rhodes by catamaran. It's a daily service. You depart in the early morning around 05:00am and get back around 06:00pm. I don't have much time to write so I just let you see some shots I made. The rest of the text is comming...... read more

Island Hopping I'm in Mykonos, one of the Greek islands. If I tried, I wouldn't even be able to describe how beautiful this place is. What I'm at right now is the Contiki Resort on the islands, so as all the people here are my age, there's TONS of bronzed young beautiful people walking around. Haha. I am not one of the bronzed ones, but I'm surprisingly not burnt to a crisp! I've been lathering up on the lotion! My tour is great, and the people are all nice and friendly. There's actually only one guy in our group of 25, not including the male tour manager (Ben, from Australia). We're off to Santorini, another island, tomorrow. Not sure what time we leave, but hopefully not too early!! Since I've come to Mykonos, I've managed to ... read more
