We walked into Rhodes today and spent some hours exploring the old town after dipping our feet ceremoniously in the Mediterranean. Greece appealed. The people are friendly and speak English, the shops are good, prices of food are more reasonable than we have previously experienced, the weather is hot and glorious, and it is beautiful. How could you go wrong? It was really interesting to walk through and experience this whole thriving community that live on and amongst ruins dating to the 4th century B.C. We also toured the Palace of the Grand Masters, an odd and fascinating collection of British, French, Roman and Byzantine art and history. -Erica ... read more

Yesterday was Friday the 13th! My day in Kos, you could write the script now, walked about & checked the tourist district & the beach, got some food... Saw Fracture at an outdoor movie theater (Greek subtitles); it was a good movie, wıth Anthony Hopkins. And, get ready Sarah, stopped for the late night sweet crepe, peanut butter & Nutello (which is a chocolate spread widely popular in Europe). Eventually went to my room for the nıght whıch turned out to be awful. Not so much the shower this time, but it was stifleing warm & mosquitos buzzing about. Needless to say, İ tossed, turned & cursed, put ınsect repellant on & Benedryl, all wıth slıght dozıng. That lasted for about 4 hrs (130-530); İ couldnt take ıt any longer, showered, left & found a ... read more

How time flies when you're having fun!! Can't believe I'm nearly half way through my time here. I definately know I'm in Rhodes now as I carry a torch with me at night - there are so many power cuts in the old town, have experienced about 4 in the past couple of weeks. Thankfully most of them are when you are in your bed, 1 time was when I had just ordered a drink and a snack, thankfully it happened after the snack had been cooked so I didn't have to wait a further 40 mins to eat!! Also you know you are in Greece when the government staff places close down early on certain days of the week to conserve energy from using all the air con machines!! They go on strike quite a ... read more

Untitled Monday-Thursday Arrive in Mykonos before 7... in the morning. We got up at 3:45am in Athens to catch a taxi to the airport for the 20 minute hop across the Aegean Sea. Just to let you know, we saved more than a few bucks for our pain and suffering. MYKONOS GOT WIND. Plenty of wind. But it helps keep things cool, most of the time. Mykonos is the kind of place best seen up close. From a distance it looks like a bunch of white rocks, which are the white-washed houses, on top of a pile of brown rocks, the island. It's as barren as a desert with hardly any green to be seen. Fortunately, we stayed at a beautiful hotel which irrigated the trees and flowers around it. We had an outstanding view of ... read more

Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Santorini July 12th 2007

Untitled Thursday, (Friday we went on an All Day Tour- that's on the next blog), Saturday, Sunday, Monday If you ever travel to Greece and only have time to see one island, make it Santorini. It has the most spectacular vistas I've ever seen. The island was born from the eruptions of a volcano, leaving behind what they call the caldera, the outer edges of the crater. We traveled from Mykonos to Santorini on a high-speed hydrofoil which took about 3 hours, less than half the time of a regular ferry. And it rides just like a plane. All the ferries arrive at the new port at the bottom of a cliff. After gettting off we then took a taxi to Perissa on the other side of the island. The ride to the top up the ... read more

Finally with the whole family Europe » Greece » Santorini By Dave090July 12th 2007David Weinstein Well after a long full day in Athens, Debra and I took the ferry to the Greek isles and have met up with our parents and Jeremy (my brother). The Greek isles are very beautiful. We are having a great time all being together. As always, there is not much time to type. We saw so many things in Athens though. The Acropolis was wonderful but crowded. All the other runes and museums were excellent. Santorini is also very nice. The food is great, and the weather amazing. This afternoon we are taking a boat to the volcano center and to swim in hot springs. It should be great. Ta... read more

Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Paros July 11th 2007

Greetings from Paros everyone. We left behind the big city feeling of Athens (we enjoyed our time but we were ready to move on) for the “real Greek” feeling of the islands. “This is what I thought Greece was going to be like” (to quote more than one Connor child). Up at 5am, walking 5 blocks heavy laden with packs (one on front and one on the back - the kids received more than their share of smiles from bleary eyed Greek business commuters and yes Carol B we have to take lessons from you on packing lighter!!), we made our way by Metro to the port of Pireaus. Unlike B.C. ferries, there are 8 or 10 large ferries simply backed onto a slab of concrete serving as a port with a cars and passengers ... read more

Unfortunately this hotel does not pick you up at the port. (Ironically, it is by far the most expensive accomodation of my trip. Just one night here & then to Paradise Beach; they couldn't accomodate me there both nights). So I had to navigate the public bus, not too bad. Got dropped off in Mykonos Town, but then had to figure out the other bus to Psarou Beach; that was a bit of a challenge as Mykonos Town, by the waterfront, has a labrynth of streets; actually specifically designed that way to confuse marauding pirates. Of course, the heat of the day doesn't help. Anyway, got dropped off near the hotel & with some more pointing in the right direction, I got there 830 PM! A room with air conditioning! But again, the shower was ... read more

The island of Santorini. So many things to see and do... I found a room on the Parrisso beach youth hostel. My bed was in the room with another 24 people. However, It was a great experience. I met 5 Austrialian girls that I spent 2 days with. I also met other travellers from all over the world. The Parrisso beach is famous for its black sand beach. The send gets very hot during the day. However, there are tons of beach bars to cool off and dance to your favorite music day and night. Fira is a biggest city of Santorini and it has great night life and amazing views from hotels and caffees perched up on the volcanic cliffs. I took a boat cruise which took me to the Volcanic island that is ... read more
