Issy‘s cold is an absolute doozy and she wakes up feeling only very marginally better. We wander along the path towards Fira in search of nourishment. I launch into a concoction known as the ”Greek Breakfast“, which seems to just consist of three eggs. The name would seem to imply that a significant proportion of the local population munches its way through this every morning, which leaves us wondering where they get the eggs from. We haven't seen any chickens here yet. I hope the eggs come from chickens. I have coffee that the spoon stands up in, and I think that I'll probably now be awake for several days. We wander into and out of shops and then into the town’s spectacularly ceilinged main church. Unlike yesterday's monastery chapel it also seems to have some ... read more

The first leg of our flight is a mind numbing fourteen hours to Doha. The Doha airport is massive, modern and very plush but it seems that someone forgot to order quite enough seats. Fortunately we only have two hours to kill. The airport has a large children's playground. The temptation to get on a swing and let off some excess energy after fourteen hours cramped in a tiny seat is almost overwhelming, but I'm sure if I did this I'd be breaking multiple laws. I've heard some not so good stories about what they do to law breakers here in the Middle East, so getting arrested before we've reached our first destination wouldn't seem to be a particularly great way to start things off. We crawl onto the plane for the next leg to Athens. ... read more

Flying out of Mykonos to Santorini with others who were stranded by the ferry schedules, only they were paying 4x the price of our tickets. We were grateful to land in much nicer weather, still windy but manageable. It was afternoon when we landed, staying in Firostefani our first stop was a walk to Fira. The views on the walk there were incredible- I took so many duplicate photos as none could do it justice. On Saturday morning, the ladies that ran our hotel knocked on our door with a little Easter basket containing 2 red dyed eggs, 2 candles, and 2 baked treats that they had baked themselves. We hadn't planned our trip to Santorini around the Easter weekend at all, it was just a happy coincidence. The girls explained to us that tonight we ... read more

SANTORINI ,WEDNESDAY, 29 OCTOBER, 2014. Fine Sunny & cool in the shade. This morning we headed out on foot to walk to the next village, walking along the community path. Were enjoying it so we decided to continue walking to OIA, about 2.5 hrs from our hotel. It turned out to be quite a walk, more a hike really, as we were forging new paths up a sizeable hill, through waist height grass, over rocky terrain. We were concerned about sprained ankles. Arrived in OIA on time!! OIA seemed very touristy and was crowded with ship born travellers. 3 large cruise ships arrived in the harbour this morning. Found a nice cafe where we stopped for a refreshing Beer. Definitely tourist prices, 3x normal cost! Walked past numerous touristy shops ( think Cavil mall). Found the ... read more

Santorini. It appears out of the Aegean Sea as mountainous islands that must be home to millions of seabirds…but what looks like a vastness of guano cascading down the cliff tops changes as the fast ferry powers closer into glistening white towns and villages. It’s as if Weta Workshop was asked to create a magical island paradise – only CGI could conjure up the wedding cake houses, precariously perched hotels with their dinky pools in all shades of blue, cliffs dripping with restaurant terraces and draped with magenta bougainvillea. Breathtakingly, gobsmackingly, eye-rubbingly beautiful, it’s a miracle Santorini exists at all and not just because of the locals’ vertiginous building habits. Regular earthquakes and devastating volcanic eruptions have plagued the Cycladic Islands since forever. Santorini is in fact a volcano and the stunning views from our ac ... read more

It's now day 3 in Santorini and the day one versions of ourselves would have been so disappointed in us - we are cowering in our dark, air conditioned apartment trying to escape the heat! Sunny and 31 degrees sounded amazing from London but the heat here is so dry and as the island is volcanic and on cliffs we aren't exactly in and out of the sea. Still we've been having an amazing time. Yesterday morning we made the most of cool air conditioned travel agents and planned out our trip in Greece and to Croatia. One of the big bugbears is that there is not cheap easy way to get to Croatia so we've resorted to flight via Rome. How bizarre. Anyway after Santorini we've decided to go to 2 other Islands, Naxos and ... read more

Much excitement on the day we left Rhodes as this was our first ferry trip amongst the Greek Isles. We started off bright and early, and just as well as we were re-directed to the commercial harbour from the tourist harbour... this is half an hour walking with all our packs,so we had to dig into that old travel spirit of ours and toughen up. Arriving at Symi was wonderful, the town, of the same name, is situated in a curve around the harbour. You might have expected the white and blue colouring here, but that is not the case. Here on Symi the old patricia style houses are painted in pastel colours. Many years ago Symi was famous for its sponge fishing and these sponges were sold in Triest. The locals of Symi took a ... read more
