Not really still in Dimitsana, although the first few photos are. We are currently in Elati, a village of only about 15 people (few more on the weekend) so it’s no surprise it doesn’t feature on maps and location entries. It’s cute but after 8 hours walk the last thing we wanted was another 600 metre climb to our homestay. Sampled a boar sausage last night. To absolutely no surprise it came with chips. Julie had the kebabs and pita bread and both were OK but nothing special. The tzatziki was good though, very creamy and plenty of garlic. The beer was really cold and even served in a cold glass so 2 out of 4 ain’t bad. Later went looking for baklava and coffee but couldn’t find any. Greece is in crisis! Couple of food photos first. Our last night in Stemnista was back to the only restaurant in the town (surprise, surprise!) but not for a a whole grilled chicken-we Made that mistake last night. I’m not sure how they cut the chicken up but there must have been at least 20 portions! Some identifiable, some not so but all good. It was spanakopita and lamb cooked in lemon, served with the ubiquitous chips. Vegetables are very hard to come by here. There are virtually none on the menu except for tomatoes. Our accomodation has a great morning breakfast, most of which they were happy for us to take away. So a couple of s cheese and spinach rolls, a couple of egg and bacon bakes and a couple of sweet biscuits went with us. Still managed ... read more

Geography first. Drove over the Corinthian Canal, pretty close to Kalamata, into the Menalon Hills, close to Sparta and … Well how good is that? But we are here in Stemnista, not big enough to register a mention on the app here but big on the lovely scale. Welcomed into our new home, made to feel very welcome, feed via ‘lunch from breakfast’ program that has been instituted on an almost compulsory basis for quite a while. In Greece it works well as in addition to the cheese, meats and pretty good bread you also get some pastries such as spanakopita which travel surprisingly well and eat surprisingly well cold. Getting here was a 2 hour bus from Central Athens to Tripoli then a taxi with Mr Andrianous. The taxi drivers for the village have their ... read more

We decided it was time for a road trip...we are super comfy at our apartment in Tolo and have ventured to some sites close by, but time to see what else the Pelopennese has to offer. On the agenda is a hike through the Lousios Gorge, seeing Olympia, birthplace of the Olympics and where ever else that may look interesting. First up was getting to the hilltop town of Dimistana, the base for the Gorge hike. It is a small village and is hanging off a cliff, which we found would be a theme for the next couple of days. Lots of pics after scrolling to the bottom. Getting there was easy (about 2.5 hours) , mostly on an excellent highway before getting off to the more local roads, which were also in great shape. As ... read more

Musings and adventuring (or as my sister calls it a holiday from our holiday!) We decide before the olive harvest begins, the weather becomes too cool, and we become to horizontal, to take ourselves on a little trip away to the central and northern Peloponnese. Maybe to a few places we have read of, been told of and dreamed of . We started with considering two nights away and extended to three using some of the money our girls gifted us for our 30th anniversary to fund the extra night in a too beautiful and romantic boutique guest house. Thank you lovely girls..... It only seems right to do a little piece here before we set off, on Greek roads, cars, maps and driving.... An education is needed..... baptism of fire, or gradual learning curve – ... read more

The olive harvest had just finished. They hand pick from December to March from olive groves seemingly covering every inch of Greece. The result was fresh preserved olives and cloudy fresh pressed olive oil that tasted like none we have ever tasted sweet, pungent and delicious. We saw none of this because we arrived in Athens at 2:30 am We left Friday right after work and flew through the night. We had a layover in Warsaw, Poland where Kevin had a run-in with the LOT departure agent who woke up on the wrong side of the bed. She threatened to take Kevin off the flight because of a carry-on issue. We worked it out and were on our way. Met at the airport by the rental car rep. Then off to the Peloponnese… dark, quiet, eerie ... read more
