After Kim whipped us all up breakfast in the villa we stood out at Saint Nicolas beach. The 50 foot catamaran that would be our home for the day sent a dingy to pick us up on the pier. A handful of us spent a glorious day on the catamaran. After exploring the ship and figuring out how the pump-operated head worked we set sail. I was asked by the Captain to help haul up the mainsail on two occasions, and no - the request was not fuelled by my knowledge of sailing but I assume solely due to my however many kilos of calamari and sardines and Mythos I portage. We sailed the breadth of the island from just north of the southeastern tip along the broad swath of the island’s south and just a ... read more

The sad thing is that the sea claimed Kim’s wedding ring – which my dad had given to my mom. In a very turbulent pull of the surf, the ring was literally sucked like a vacuum from Kim’s finger. The action was so swift that although she felt the initial tug there was no time to even clench the fist to prevent its release. Even with goggles there was no chance of seeing it – even with ogles it was impossible to see an inch in front of the glass and thhe pull of the surf could have had it half a kilometer out in minutes – wee felt the bottom in the crashing surf and looked in futility for a long time until we had to board our ship. In a twist of fate when ... read more

Zakynthos is home to more breeding endangered loggerhead sea turtles than any other Mediterranean isle. In the more densly nested areas there are nests every 30 cm on the beach!! We visited the HQ of the Eco-centre that manages and supervises their preservation, talked with the staff and Will watched a video about the turtles. We took in their exhibits and then walked to the beach. After climbing the stairs down to Gerakas Beach we were met by one of the staff who informs everyone coming to the beach where to stay away from not to disturb turtle nests. The nests they know about are marked with metal contraptions. Like Voidokilia and Methoni beach, Gerakas is idyllic – endless clean sand and crystal clear water with cliffss as bookends. Kim joined the local flavour by going ... read more

We begrudgingly parted ways with Gialova and drove from the SW corner of the Peloponnese to the NW corner – the glum town of Kyllini to catch the ferry. The western Peloponnese is lush with olive and fruit trees. Our destination stop en route to the ferry was Olympia – the site of the first Olympic games about 2022 years ago. The way coolest part was that the original 100 metre track was still intact including the raised start and finish lines. Running the 100 meters on that track (oops Will corrected me that it is a 200 meter track – that makes me feel much better given the effort of sprinting it with them in the formidable Greek heat – Helios was particularly fiery that day methinks…). Many buildings and columns remain originally erected to ... read more

Yesterday I was thrilled to hear that I’ll have the day off today! As my lady-boss said: „Tomorrow Adriana sleep. S. (herself) sleep.” So, I planned a day trip to Argostoli, the capital of the island. I’ll go there by bus, I’ll take loads of pictures, walk around and enjoy the sun. It is pretty hard to keep a secret here or keep anything to yourself – for example that you’re not going to be in your room or in the hotel on your day off. One Slovakian girl heard it than at lunch time everyone asked where will I go. When I replied with the name of the above mentioned town, such looks were given in response as if I have said that on my free day I’ll swim all the way to America and ... read more

Today we decided to get a small taste of Greece on our own. So, we walked along the fishing harbor until we came across a large Greek Orthodox church named after the patron saint of the island... St. Dionysios (St. Denis). Never have I seen so many icons in one place. Every square inch of the walls and ceiling were covered with iconic drawings of Christ, Mary, the saints, angels, and the miracle stories of St. Denis. I even saw a beautiful version of "Jesus meeting the woman at the well" on the ceiling above a huge chandelier. I smiled from ear to ear - unfortunately no pictures were allowed. So, we bought a small book on St. Dionysios and lit a candle for the Miseykos - remembering that George grew up in the Russian Orthodox ... read more

Today was my third workday but the very first one where I actually did the cleaning all by myself! Of course, I got less rooms than the others who are here for nearly a month now and they are really good: they get 11-14 rooms a day. I got 6 today and even though I finished before 15.30, around 13.30 there were some problems… But not huge problems. I had a room where I just needed to make some order as the guests are still there. This means that if the bathroom is filthy I clean it, I make the bed, empty the ashtrays, change the towels and change the bag in the toilet bin. By the way, I don’t know how many of you are aware but Greeks don’t put the toilet paper in the ... read more

I’m not gonna write on a daily basis – I promise. But at the beginning it is so much easier to write everything out. Yesterday when I arrived I felt a bit lost but I must have been really tired. Today I woke up with a positive mindset although I was thinking really hard how to get a pet to my room. I mean a pet I choose (not like the mentioned but never-seen-yet-centipedes). It would mean company and I would really don’t mind that we don’t speak the same language – here I gave up my goal to improve my Italian or English. Slovakian and Greeks seems like an option. Greek seems a lot more essential every day… Regarding the morning wake up today, I thought that the manager said when I wake up, I’ll ... read more

Here I am writing from the island of Kephalonia, from it’s sleepy town, Skala and from the obviously existing and as beautiful as on the pictures: Port Skala Hotel Village. I report that I have arrived safely, I’m alive and I can hear the sea rumbling – so that must be real as well. The journey itself was unbearable. For real. Okay, it may be the weariness talking right now, although I’ve been amongst the luckiest on the coach: no one sat beside me, I sat totally alone. You may think „how awesome is that!” – but do not. It makes sleeping even harder as you think you have more space to stretch over – but it is never enough. So the longest period of time slept through was 1,5 hours and that was the maximum ... read more

How to survive for a few months abroad alone? It’s early to say I've survived it but I already have my plan and some habits to help me cope with situations. Of course this is not a big, real survival: I have a fridge and chocolate and some people who claim to be talking to me in Hungarian. For free. I don’t want to exaggerate the situation and state that I’m the only lonely traveler int he world… I’m not even in danger – although I could argue with that as it is just a matter of viewing it from different angles… My mind is not that disturbed yet and there’s nothing endangering my physical well-being directly. Still, the start was difficult and it still is but as I got used to things, here are some ... read more
