I just woke up from my afternoon siesta (I need to find a way to get Canada to adopt this) and have the time to quickly reflect on the completely different world Greece can offer. After tear gas, rock throwing and Molotov cocktails, I am surrounded by sheer beauty. I am on the island of Crete, the largest of the Greek islands. It is fairly short with only a 45 minute bus ride from north to south tips, but it would take a few hours to drive across. Two days ago, I arrived to my hostel in a town called Rethymno, which is located north central. I quite literally dropped my backpack off and then took off with an Aussie girl and another American guy. We rented a car and drove 3 hours south west through ... read more

Day 5. Today we drove to Rethymno to visit the old town, port and the Fortezza fortress. Fascinating town with lots of very narrow streets, young people everywhere - we felt like the senior citizens. Had a nice lunch and wandered around the streets soaking up the atmosphere. The fortress was built by the Venetians starting in 1573ad. The mediterrean sea was blue as the sky and very calm today. Came back to our villa and Mike went for a swim in our lounge room swimming pool. Tonight we are heading into Old Chania to have dinner at a restaurant that Doris's friend owns.... read more

I wasn't originally planning on covering Rethymno on a separate blog entry, but the place was so beautiful and I had taken so many photos, that it most definitely warranted one. The bus ride along the northern coast of Crete was a scenic one, as the bus snaked along the rocky cliffs that towered over the aquamarine sea. Rethymno's bus station is almost right on the water and the building is far too small for the number of people waiting to catch a bus, as tourists and locals alike spilled out onto the tarmac. The staff there were also some of the most unhelpful I have ever encountered. I had arrived at about 1pm but I knew that the reception at the hostel wasn't open until 5pm so I needed somewhere to dump my bags while ... read more

RETHYMNON Day 65 I feel much better this morning and was even able to eat my breakfast. Even though I was unable to see Iraklion I am stilling leaving this city to see another. I took the morning bus to Rethymnon, which is just down the coast from Iraklion. I arrived and went straight to the hostel to drop my bags. Rethymnon is a small town and is really cute. It has a small beach that was a little dirty from the winter but from what I understand it is very lovely in the summer. The beach meets up with the Venetian port that is lined with little cafes and restaurants. I headed to the Mona Lisa café that sells a sheep’s milk ice cream. Since I can’t have milk products I was really excited ... read more

Hi Everyone My trip through the Greek Islands was planned to take 9 days. I have heard great things about all the islands. While I was in Athens people would show up in at the hostel raving about what a great time it was on the Islands. The hard part was choosing which islands to see. I chose Crete, Santorini, and Mykonos. I chose Crete because it had several archeology sites as well as natural gorges and mountains. Santorini because I heard it had beautiful architecture and black sand beaches. When I got there I heard there is also a red sand beach and a volcano with hot springs. Mykonos is right next to Delos, the mythological birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. I did not know what to expect when I got on the gigantic ferry ... read more

This is my first blog for my stay in Crete. I'll try to do at least one a week for the next 5 or 6 weeks with pictures so you all can keep track of what I'm up to. This is also my first blog ever, so I apologize if it ends up being long, confusing or uninteresting-- so please bear with me. I arrived in Crete on Friday afternoon, after a long trip from New York JFK, through Paris Charles De Gaulle, and Athens, finally landing in Heraklion, the capital of Crete on Friday afternoon. Almost didn't make the connection in Paris because we left JFK an hour and a half early (which, for JFK is par for the course), and my experience in Paris is a bit of a blur- probably because it consisted ... read more

Thursday, 8th January, 2009. A bright sunny morning. I took some pictures from the balcony as it looked so nice. Need to think about what we are doing today. On another subject, the travelblog holds various information about how often it is viewed and all that sort of stuff. As at this morning, our travelblog has now been viewed on 1919 occasions. We decided to spend some time looking around Rethymno. So we left the hotel about ten and went for a coffee first at the Livingroom. We then wandered the town looking in the shops, we bought some pastries at a shop for our breakfast. There are some differing architectural styles, the Venetians were here, as well as the Turks, who left their mark and a few minnaretts. We went up to the Fortezza Fortress ... read more

Wednesday continued We went out about seven thirty, the intention being to wander round the town and have something to eat. I had thought that a lot of the shops would still be open, but there was less than I expected. We ended up in a bar on the seafront called La Bamba. We had a couple of Gin & Tonic's and Coke lights. While there we had a long discussion about our possible travel plans and our short and long term future. We have both come to the conclusion and agreement that we don't have any problems not living in the UK any longer. This raised a lot of questions about our house and so on. We have to do further research with some of the thoughts we had and when we have done that, ... read more
