Sunday, 4th January, 2009. A cloudy, but bright start to the day. We managed to sit out for a while enjoying the weather. Pat cooked the chicken sausages, with some baked beans for our lunch. We left the villa about one o'clock and took a walk along the beach, watching the sea. We stopped at Gecko, and whilst there updated the blog and caught up with our emails. We checked the premium bonds website, and we have won another £50,00, hooray. Following this we popped into Status and played pool. When we left we walked back along the beach, and returned to the villa at five thirty. We snacked on various things in te fridge, conscious of finishing things, as time runs out on our time in this location. Monday, 5th January, 2009. Some clouds, but ... read more

6 hours on the ferry. The ferry was almost identical to the last, but this one had rows and rows of bench seats on the deck which made for a more comfortable sleep. We arrived in Heraklion, Crete expecting to find a guy with a sign and a van, ready to drive us to his hotel. We walked off the ferry in the crowd and saw nothing. Nothing but friends and family waiting for others. No guy, no sign, nowhere to stay. Just a lousy Lonely Planet map, which didn't specify where we were in relation to anything. We made our way to the main road, saw a sign saying city center pointing straight ahead. Half of the fellow ferry passengers went right, the rest straight. Again it was stinking hot and we just wanted to ... read more

We arrived in Athens at about 4:30 in the morning as our flight from Barcelona was delayed about 3 hours. This was not a good start but we were all optimistic about our streak of bad luck ending and were determined to make Greece a postive experience. We had to wait about 1 hour to get on the metro as it was not running yet and we were able to find our hostel very easily, which was a first for us! We were all so exhausted from staying up all night waiting for our flight that we ended up sleeping for 8 hours until around 4:30 in the afternoon. We all then got up refreshed, got coffee, and walked around the city for a bit. From the start, everyone was very nice. We met the owner ... read more

Well I'm not exactly in Rethymno, but will be soon. Currently I am in a charming little village called Katalagari. We are getting the village experience while living in a place that is so beautiful I would come back in a second. It is called Katalagari country suites and we are staying in a mini apartment with everything from a separate bed room to a flat screen TV with DVD player to a kitchen to a washing machine to a huge bath with a jacuzi and we have a lawn with an amazing view of the Cretan valley. Since I last wrote I have went to the beach for the day, if I didn't already mention that, went to a hookah bar, climbed the venetian walls, went to a ceramics place, an organic market (this was ... read more

...massage it! Well that's the idea apparently. When I tried it I ended up running circles in the sand, clutching onto 70kg of Loggerhead turtle that was keen to get back to the sea! I've done 2 night surveys now and they are amazing, even if they do completely shatter you for the next few days. Seeing a turtle laying her eggs is one of the most magical sights I have ever witnessed. I never realised how agile they are. These prehistoric armoured beasts can move their flippers like hands, scooping up sand to dig a deep hole into the sand. Then they lower themselves down and go into a trance as they drop over one hundred perfectly round, shiny, white eggs into the nest. We use ping pong balls in our nest models and they ... read more

I have booked an overnight ferry from island of Rodos to the island of Crete. It was supposed to take 12 hours. Due to choppy seas it took us 16 hours to reach our destination. After 16 hours on choppy sea I felt like a drunk sailor. Even on land I still thought things were rocking for good 6 hours after the ride. :( not the best experience, but here I am ...The biggest island in Greece. Crete I arrived in Heraklion, the biggest city on the island. It is a big, dirty city, with nothing to offer. To fix that I headed straight to the bus station and took the bus to the smaller city of Rethymnon. It is a smaller city with a nice beach on the western side of the island. It ... read more
