Today, we travel through the Peloponnese and cross the Corinth Canal to Athens. Had to get up at 6 this morning so we could catch the ferry to the mainland. Carted our bags up the stairs to the pool so they could be driven down to the coach, and was glad we didn't have to carry them down all the stairs. Had breakfast in a rush, there was no yoghurt so that was disappointing. Drove about half an hour to the port, then got on as foot passangers while Marty waited to drive the bus on. Left at about 8.45, heading straight for the mainland. Sat inside as it was cold and a bit rainy. It was set up like an aeroplane, with rows of seats and a TV at the front. The shop was ... read more

3 sun-filled days on the beautiful Greek Island of Corfu staying at Contiki's Frini Beach Stopover. Whether you're looking for energetic water sports or just want to enjoy the beach, Corfu caters for all tastes. Time to explore on a caique cruise or try parasailing. At night, there's Greek dancing, the chance to sample local specialties and make the most of the nightlife in nearby Corfu town. Arrived in 'the fu' at about 9, got on the coach to drive half an hour to our hotel, which is on the water. We have an amazing view of the ocean across the road, but the beach is a few kms south. Had breakfast on the rooftop of 'hotel frini', the contiki hotel. Got back on the coach and Marty dropped us into town, where Amanda walked ... read more

Hey peeps, Pia here, writing from Athens, where it is ridiculously hot and not quite as dirty as we expected. Time is short and internet is costly, so here's a quick summary of what's been happening: -We parted ways with our travel buddy Jim, but not before one last fabulous night out dancing at, oddly enough, an "Irish pub" in Santorini. At point I leaned over and asked Jim if traditional Irish pubs blast Beyonce and charge 5 euro for a beer...he looked at me with disgust in his eyes, so I took that as a no. -Made our way to Crete (I saw a dolphin during the ferry ride!) and after less than one day in Iraklio, booked it out of there and bussed to Sitia, a small little town about three hours a way. ... read more

We have been traveling a quite a bit away from the trusty laptop in our stateroom and haven’t had a chance to post a Travelblog, so now that we have a couple of sea days we’ll try to make up for it. After leaving Egypt our ship visited the Greek island of Santorini, Athens on the mainland, and Istanbul in rapid succession. Santorini is a small island with not a great deal to see, but very scenic and lovely. It lies in the Aegean Sea off the southern coast of Greece. In 1500 BC a volcano at the center of the island erupted and the center of the island literally exploded, leaving the harbor in which we anchored. Tenders took us a short distance ashore. Thira, the island’s main town, is at the top of ... read more

The words of the day are : "It does not exist" As of last night the Train in Greece did not exist, Tourist informaition anywhere in Greece still does not exist, and Olympia didn't exist. We were supposed to go to Delphi today. We got up at 5:30am to catch the 7:30 bus there allowing ourselves pleanty of time. Because the bus system sucks we did not make it. Things are not very clearly marked and are hard to find. Anyways it was probably good because we spent the day locating the train station and coming up with more concrete plans. The ferries in greece run sparatically. There are boats to placs but not back or things like the boats only run on Tuesday. Also the raods and cities are spelt differently depending on where you ... read more

I just finnished writting an amazing bolg and it all dissapeared on me. I am going to try again but i don't have much time to do it as well. Things I forgot about Rome. We saw this really cute cat shelter located in a square of ruins. They take in all of the stray cats and fix, vaccinate and feed them. then they let them wane\der about the ruins. It's really cool. We got one hour of sleep our last night in Rome because we had to tke the late bus back to the camp site. We waited for the bus from 11pm until 1am along with tons of people that had just gotten out of a fee concert. There were more people squeesed into that bus than I ever thought possible. We then had ... read more

Europe » Greece » Attica » Spetses July 15th 2003

From Rob: Deanne and I visited Spetses, Greece right after our trip to Mount Kilimanjaro via London and Barbados. The cool thing was that we incidentally learned about Athena Travel, which set up this very cheap trip for a Last-Minute deal (found all over London). We had to take a flight at around 3 a.m., then an early morning ferry to the island. But it was so worth it! Spetses was a fine place to visit. On the issue of race and ethnicity, it was an interesting experience. We noticed that little kids would blatantly point at us, simply because of the color of our skin. They had little or no contact with Black people. This happened as we walked down the street into town. It happened while eating dinner at a restaurant. In the latter ... read more

Yey, for Easyjet and cheap flights!! Lisa and I flew to Athens and then took a boat to Hydra, an island where there are no cars, only donkeys! We spent the day here before getting another boat to the beautiful town of Napflion which has an incredible Venetian feel. After a few days here we moved on to Delphi before going back to Athens. There was a very strange festival on in the city at the time which involved everyone hitting each other with plastic clubs and spraying foam on each other!... read more
