There is not much to write about today, since we have done so much already. Today was mostly a shopping day, but first it was a sleep-in day. Then we took the U-Bahn to the Olympic tower, took the elevator to the top (that's the only way we go... to the top) and checked out the view. We then went to the English Gardens to find the Chinese beer garden. We found it, but it was basically closed. It had just stopped raining and was likely to rain more, which might have had something to do with it, but they had no food and were just starting to serve beers. We were looking for lunch, though, so we went elsewhere. We went back to the Hofbrauhaus for some lunch foods, but couldn't find a table so ... read more

I finally got access to a computer on which I had time and felt safe enough to try to upload photos from the trip. I've added at least a few to every possible past entry! (From the list of all entries, you only see the first picture; click on "Full Text" to make sure you see all the rest.) I'm totally excited about the way these have turned out. Please, go back and see and let me know what you think!!... read more

Today was Neuschwanstein day. It was the most physically demanding day yet. We booked a tour through an American tour company in Munich, and although we knew what we were in for, we weren't quite prepared. We took a bus to the bottom of the mountain on which Neuschwanstein sits, to meet our tour guide and bikes. Sadly it was raining and chilly, which made it a bit more adventurous. We took the bikes on a trek through some fields and around swan lake. The last couple hundred meters were uphill so that was hard on the legs. We stopped by at the lake, but only one person completely got in, as we feared extreme cold when we got out. Mike and I put our feet in, that was our swan lake experience. We had some ... read more

Today Drea and I visited the spa resort town of Baden Baden, near the Schwartzwald (Black Forest). We indulged ourselves in the full treatment at the famous Friedrichsbad, also known as the Roman-Irish Baths. Let me just say there's nothing legal you can do for 29€ that feels so good, and possibly nothing illegal either. The spa treatment consists of 16 steps, all helpfully outlined on large numbered signs in German, French and English. Squeamish Americans beware: all 16 are performed completely naked (two days a week, the mixed-gender pools are closed off for women only, but this was not one of those days). Step 1 is a soapy shower, followed by steps 2 and 3, increasingly extremely hot dry sauna rooms. I'm guessing this is to get rid of impurities. After a quick rinse (step ... read more

071205 I've come through several countries since I last blogged, Switzerland, Italy and now France. I've currently holed up here in Avignon for now. I've had charging concerns for my PDA, and have worked through a number of possible issues none of which have resolved the issue to my satisfaction and confidence, but I think I know what's going on, so I'm risking the time to compose a blog hoping that I'll be able to recharge this thing afterwards. If I don't succeed, this will be the last blog till I meet up with Sheela in England. I never finished writing about Germany. That was so long ago now that I'm not sure what I'll remember, but I left off reporting on the solar expo. I completed my survey on Friday (2 days instead of 3), ... read more

Day 3 I tried the radler with lunch after not liking my breakfast streusel. The radler is much easier than beer. We walked around the markets some more and did some shopping. I found some cheap clothes and some shot glasses for the collection and Mike found some collectible stuff. We visited the Hard Rock Café shop for fun, found the American travel center, booked a trip to Neuschwanstein for tomorrow, and then it started storming so we went to the famous Hofbrauhaus tavern. We listened to some of the music, had a Hofbrauhaus original beer, and then headed back out to the Marienplatz. We watched the clock show (Glockenspeil??) where these little characters on the clock tower dance around while the clock is chiming and then we climbed St. Peter’s church. We started heading back ... read more

Hello Friends and all! So I am going to upload some pictures today. Get pumped up! haha! So here are a few to get you started. Don't worry, we're all safe. I am like the mother to everyone. haha! I sure do like that purple Happy Camper shirt don't I? Speaking of which, I don't think I ever paid Ashley for it. I should do that. Anyway, the last few days have been lounge days. Sunday we went to the park and laid around, played some soccer...ya know. Saturday we went to Fulda and then out that night. Look at the pictures. I will try to write more tomorrow, but I have to go to class right now. I am already late. I am having a blast, but I miss everyone! Love, love--RHIA ... read more

Day 2 in Munich included lots of wandering. We went to the English Gardens, the Residence, the Viktualienmarkt, Marienplatz again, and some of the other “platz”es. We found the part of the river where people surf. Yes, the river has some sort of resemblance to a wave right there under a bridge and people had their wetsuits and surfboards. They could only go one at a time, but it seemed fun. However, I just kept thinking about how they’re missing out by not having a real beach with a real ocean with real waves. It’s interesting to see how others make do when they are landlocked. I couldn’t handle it. They serve beers with every meal here to the point where by this point I’m willing to pay more for water. I would say beer flows ... read more

I had a wonderful, leisurely morning in Trier, tying up the loose ends of sights I didn't see last night. After the now-usual hearty German buffet breakfast at my hotel, I hiked down to the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier, an archaeological museum that Rick's guidebook made sound very exciting. He wasn't wrong, not in the least... the wonderful Roman floor mosaics and funerary monuments were right where he said they would be. However, about half to two-thirds of the museum is closed off and utterly empty. I discovered from a German-language poster (yes, I read much of it all by belf) that they are remodeling in anticipation of some major Karl der Große celebration in 2007... new air-conditioning (desperately needed, for certain), better accessibility of exhibits, new elevator, etc. Seems like all of Europe wants me to ... read more

(Another day, another Mass....) Heilige Messe at Aachener Dom was fantastic. As a weekday morning Mass, it was small, sparsely attended (mostly by nuns, and at least one monk) and music-free. However, it was a great opportunity not only to see, but to experience the inside of this ancient church. I believe it's the oldest in Germany and one of the oldest in northern Europe. Out of respect, I did not take any photographs inside, not even after the service. It was very dark anyway and they wouldn't've turned out too well. There are a lot of nuns in Germany and Austria, by the way. Mostly older women (the vocation, like Masonry and Eastern Star and practically everything else, is in decline), but I've seen at least one young nun and at least one African nun. ... read more
