Hello all, I´m presently in Frankfurt for one night at the moment. Germany has been interesting, full of Americans and beer. I started out here coming from Salzburg, Austria (and the Sound of Music tour and ice caves) and went to Munich. Munich is an interesting city. The department stores sell traditional German dresses, everything edible consists of meat or pretzels (except the Indian food, which is actually affordable), and people are fascinated by the Glockenspiel in the town centre. My first day there, I went to see Dachau concentration camp, which is about 40 min. outside the city. It was really sobering to see the actual camp and to learn more about what went on there. Especially the so-called "medical experiments". After the tour, I went out for dinner to the Augustiner brewhouse with 2 ... read more

I am currently sitting in front of the old Imperial Place of Berlin, bombed and rebuild as the Palast der Republik or of the People or something or the other. Quite an eyesore but unfortunately still there. I am currently actively cheering on the Finnish female beach volleyball team. They are leading the game by 21 points to 16 against the German female team (the finnish girls are prettier). It all seems slightly sureal: there is a relatively large crowd hapily munching away on their bratwursts and drinking their daily allowance of 10 pints of beer (at least it is good beer, unlike in another country which shall remain nameless). There is a disproportionately large amount of pretty girls, leaving little to the imagination, glorious sunshine (I have changed into holiday-stupid tourist gear: shorts, sandals and ... read more

After finishing my locum job and having no work organised I decided to book a ticket and jump on a plane the following day. I ended up in Germany being met by Phil and Basti at the Stuttgart airport. They met me with a NZ flag !! So cool to see them !!!! We drove to their home town of tubingen. It interesting driving on german motorways at night, on the right hand side with no speed limits!! Was met by phil's family who all stayed awake to meet me and have a light evening meal. Stayed with Phil's family - his mother Rika, sister Julia, dog Luna and brother Johannes- who everyone calls honey, but i called Joe. I got to live in a real german house and they made me german food. I got ... read more

Hi everyone! We are now in Cochem, the second c is silent. This place is small and very quiet, which is much appreciated after Pragueand it´s crowds. We got here on the 19th and we stayed at a youth hostel that was completely deserted. A couple schools were coming in the next day so we had to find a new place cause they were all booked up. We ended up getting a great deal on an apartmentguesthouse that has it´s own living room, bedroom, full kitchen, porch and even... washing machine! And for only 20 euro. Amy and I fought over who got to use the washing machine first, I won of course... It´s a good thing because I had started to take dirty clothes out of the bag and decide which one smelled the least, ... read more

Still got that cold today. I declared myself a day off; even if I weren't already totally entitled to one, it helps that most museums and major attractions are closed on Mondays. I slept until 9:30 and dinked around, rearranged luggage, watched CNN International, and so forth until about 11:30 before showering. My hotel room is in a small suite with toilet and shower shared with two other rooms; annoying, but survivable and nicely affordable. I headed out after noon on a Mission From God™ to get some laundry done in a real washing machine with real soap. The travel wash I bought from Rick's store leaked (thank heavens for Ziploc, but, hello, travel wash, Rick?!!) and washing stuff in a sink without a stopper was minimally effective in a pinch, but kinda yucky (clean but ... read more

I met Karin Engelhardt by accident in Hofbrauhaus a couple of weeks ago, and found out that she was the first Fachhochschule Coburg student to come to K-State. That was three years ago now, but she’s still around, finishing up her last semester in school. She goes home almost every weekend to her town of Himmelkron and she invited me to with her anytime I liked, so I called her up for this past weekend of the 17th-19th of June. (June? Already?) Karin picked me up Friday afternoon, and we hit the road. The first stop was supposed to be a visit to Karin’s godmother, who was in the hospital with minor pains, but a few wrong turns later happenstance put us at the foot of a hill with a well-known Pilgramige Church atop. I’d known ... read more

Sorry to send out this blog so soon after our blog from Amsterdam, but since it is done we thought it was important to get back on track. And for our true fans who just can’t get enough…we’ll feed your addiction just this once. We leave for Venice tomorrow so expect our blog on Salzburg soon as well… As we travel through the cloudy German/Austrian country side from Munich to Salzburg via train with the alps not so far in the distance, it is hard not to think back on the incredible journey we have had over the last 18 days. What seemed daunting at first, now has become reasonable and, dare I say, “normal.” But as we pass each German sounding city that they announce over the loud speaker, I am reminded that we ought ... read more

We'll be here in Germany for three more days. On Wednesday we're flying to London where we'll stay until the 27th. Then we're going to Rome for four days. Then we'll fly back to Germany and meet up with Pam. There's a picturesque lake in town, so today we went out and had a picnic. Katherine enjoyed feeding the ducks. She was especially fond of the mother duck and her babies.... read more

Because I couldn't even make a dent in my itinerary of sights to see. Because I want to learn German. Because it's so cheap. Because the food is good..and cheap. Because the people are nice, and if the're not, it's usually only temporary. Because it's so weird. Because it's such a schizo city. In parts where it appears it's most ugly, a backyard reveals a beach volleyball court, or huge courtyard garden, or underground superclub. Because where it appears to be most beautiful, it really is, even if there's no living depth. I could go on. I went to the Sage Club on Thursday night, their famous rock night. Sage Club is located through a door that seems to indicate you're going into a U-Bahn station. Instead, you're greeted with several rooms of nightlife. There's the ... read more

After my day in the sun, taking useless pictures of animals and generally enjoying myself, I was overcome by a strong sense of guilt. It had to be guilt. Either guilt or heatstroke. Surely there was some imbalance in the Jason, as I'd indulged my whimsy but not my intellect. Cavorting about Berlin on a rickety bicycle, drinking cheap beer and laying in the sun was all well and good, but when was I going to grow up, put on long pants, and play adult? Hoping to avert disappointment and expand my mind, I visited the two most immediately appealing of Berlin's MANY (MANYMANYMANY) museums. Berlin is serious about its history and culture and seriously good at marketing it. There is even an island in the city devoted solely to museums. First, the Jüdisches Museum ...heavily ... read more
